Traditionally Tadakuma

                                                           "Traditionally Tadakuma"
Sun.Star Davao, June 17, 2017

When it comes to our culinary escapades, nothing gives more joy to our family than a piping hot bowl of ramen. There is just this indescribable feeling of warmth and nostalgia when we bite into the noodles and savor the soothing broth.

One of our family’s personal favorites in Davao is the ramen served at Tadakuma Japanese Restaurant. From the Ramen Tei near the old Davao airport to its various locations, you would surely find our family gathered there for a meal on a regular basis.

Last week, I was finally able to meet the man behind Tadakuma, Manuel “Manny” Joaquin, as he visited one of his franchise locations along Carlos Villa-Abrille Avenue (formerly Tulip Drive) in Matina.

Over sparkling sake with franchisee George Cang Jr., I learned that Mr. Manny came to Davao from Japan when he was 13 years old. Born in Yokohama, he studied at the Ateneo de Davao where he started as a grade one student. “I did not know how to speak English or Filipino then so I had to learn from scratch”, he recalls.

Traditional Japanese

He describes the food at Tadakuma as traditional Japanese. “We really don’t do fusion here. However, we are quite flexible when it comes to satisfying the customer’s preference. You can personalize, mix and create your own soup stock and choose which kind of noodles (udon, soba or ramen) you like”, Mr. Manny shares.

The fishing aficionado guarantees that Tadakuma only uses the freshest ingredients. “We start preparing our dishes once you order them; from the slicing of the meat and vegetables, and cooking of the noodles. That’s why we recommend that customers do not pre-order if other members of the group are not around yet. Ramen must be eaten within 5 minutes after it is served. Otherwise, the noodles will become soggy”, he points out.

George, who has been a Ramen Tei/Tadakuma loyal customer since his college days, discloses that franchising Tadakuma was something that he and his co-franchisees were very pleased with. “Manny does not treat us as franchisees but as business partners. He is very hands-on when it comes to suggesting how the restaurant should look like, particularly the kitchen. He would also field his trusted staff to the branches so that franchisees will have seasoned personnel who can efficiently support the operations”, George reveals.

SEASONED STAFF. Mr. Manny fields his trusted staff to the branches so that franchisees will have seasoned personnel who can efficiently support the operations. Emma, for example, has been with Tadakuma for 17 years.

The young businessman says that Mr. Manny supplies the ‘secret’ sauces and handmade noodles from his commissary. “As for the rest of the ingredients, we have the freedom to choose our suppliers as long as it passes Tadakuma’s high standards”.

Franchise-friendly

Mr. Manny is likewise open to the idea of franchisees introducing their own dishes. For instance, the Tadakuma Matina (Carlos Villa-Abrille Ave.) branch began serving the Wagyu Beef Cubes, Scallop Sushi and Saba Mackerel Sushi after earning the thumbs up of the founder.

For franchisees, Mr. Manny has this basic requirement, “If you don’t know how to cook, at least, know the taste”. Fortunately, George, the franchisee, knows both very well as he loves to experiment in the kitchen and go on gastronomic adventures.

George likens the ramen of Tadakuma to that of Tokyo’s ramen which has a bolder and stronger taste. “Here at Tadakuma, an order of ramen is more than enough for one person. Our broth is boiled on low fire the whole day and we never re-use it the following day. On the other hand, the vegetables are cooked using high pressure so that they remain crisp”, he adds.

Of course, aside from their bestselling ramen, Tadakuma also offers an array of well-loved Japanese food such as Gyudon, Sushi, Katsu Curry, Katsudon, Sukiyaki, among others.

At the age of 70, Mr. Manny is finally going to retire soon as his Manila-based daughter is set to return to Davao to take over Tadakuma’s family-owned branch and commissary for franchisees.

And, certainly, customer satisfaction in his traditionally Tadakuma way will be on top of his list as he passes on his chef’s hat to the next generation.

Confidently beautiful with a heart at 18

“Confidently beautiful with a heart at 18”
Sun.Star Davao, July 1, 2017

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach’s iconic blue ball gown on her coronation night made such a lasting impression on Tiffany Aleanna Cruz Lim that when she was asked by young Dabawenya fashion designer Maizy Colleen what gown she had in mind for her 18th birthday, the debutante requested it to be her inspiration.

“And, Maizy just knew what to do. I wanted something bold with jewel tones so she created a royal blue ball gown with individually handsewn lace appliqués down to the hemline and adorned them with exquisite Swarovski crystals in shades of royal to dark blue. The gown’s crystals stunningly twinkled under the lights”, smiles the statuesque Tiffany, the eldest daughter of entrepreneurs Alexander Lim Jr. and Jo Ann Cruz-Lim.

"The original debut theme was the Disney film “Enchanted”. However, as ideas progressed and I became more hands-on, each new element improved into something I specifically favored. In the end, I was not restricted to one theme. Together, it became one whole magical concept that represented who I was as a person, and a kaleidoscope of the things that I loved”, intimates Tiffany, a Grade 12 student at Ateneo de Davao University.

At the Davao Convention and Trade Center, Golden Touch’s event stylist Noel Tanza elegantly decorated the ballroom with whimsical trees mimicking cherry blossoms. On the other hand, the three-tiered ivory-colored fondant cake by Marilie Garbo was gorgeously bedecked with dainty icing flowers and lovely silk butterflies.

Much like the debut theme, Tiffany’s pre-debut shoot and teaser by Simply Gray Studio and styled by Sofia Sibala, highlighted the debutante’s myriad of facets and looks from metropolitan, vintage, sweet and fierce.

"The teaser was a take on my adventurous side, willing to experience novel things”, declares the multi-talented Tiffany who plays the piano and guitar, creates and sells hyperrealistic portraits, does boxing and Krav Maga, and enjoys creative writing and singing. The consistent honor student is likewise the club president of “Kawal”, the official yearbook of the Ateneo de Davao University Senior High School.

During the 18 Roses, each dance was uniquely choreographed with customized music and dance moves ranging from hip hop, waltz, and freestyle.

On the other hand, the special people representing the 18 Candles carried lighted lamps as they gracefully walked across the ballroom while their speeches were shown through a video.
Pastor Richard Guion, a dear family friend, led the 18 Treasures and began his heartwarming tribute by giving a blessing. “He reminded me that the celebration was not about me, but God”, discloses Tiffany.
In his touching speech, Daddy Alex lovingly describes Tiffany as a gracious person with a kind soul. “She cares because she wants to, not because she needs to.  Smart and tough, Tiffany is my inspiration to be a better person and dad”, discloses the proud father.
That captivating evening, Mommy Jo Ann also shared a priceless advice to her firstborn, “Life may not always be perfect like in fairy tales but remember that your family is here to give you all the love and support you need. Spread your wings and reach for your dreams. Know your self-worth and always be thankful for all the things that you are blessed with”.
With faith in the Lord, a supportive family and strong determination, nothing can definitely stop Tiffany, the future doctor, from pursuing her goals as she faces each step of the way, confidently beautiful with a heart.

 Very Vania”
Sun.Star Davao, July 15, 2017

Meeting Vania Romoff, currently the Philippines’ “It Girl” in fashion design, was a pleasant surprise.

With her fame and sophisticated demeanor, I was quite unsure on how to approach her. But, it turned out, this Cebuana lass, with her stunning mestiza features, was remarkably amiable and delightfully down-to-earth.

Her face beamed as we briefly talked about her best friend Joie Soberano, who also happens to be our family friend.  “I was the maid of honor during Joie’s wedding, and Joie is also coming home from Switzerland to be my maid of honor”, Vania reveals.

The 29-year old Vania recently visited Davao City to present her 12-piece capsule collection for Plains & Prints at the Chimes Flagship Boutique along Gov. Sales Street.

Subdued drama

“Plains & Prints, like me, caters to the same kind of modern woman – proud, powerful and confident in her femininity. When designing this collection, I imagined a vibrant, light-hearted and beautiful woman who enjoys life. And, she expresses this love and optimism for life through the way she dresses,” Vania explains of her creative vision.

Each of the exclusive pieces reflect “Vania’s penchant for subdued drama with dainty ribbons, delicate embellishments, and flounce”.

“For this collaboration, I wanted to infuse a sense of playful optimism and celebrate the Filipino woman through wonderful prints inspired by local flora such as the bougainvillea and gorgeous ikat prints. I took these elements and worked them into classic silhouettes like shift dresses, wrap dresses and trousers, all staples for the working woman’s wardrobe,” the School of Fashion and the Arts alumna describes.

The impressive collection bears the modern romanticist’s signature ‘put-together’ style which is wearable, timeless and oh-so feminine. Expectedly very chic. Very Vania.

Effortless vibe

“I feel so happy to finally launch what I have been secretly working on since last year. I’m so blessed to have been able to come back full circle after having a baby and slowing down for a while. I am truly grateful for this collaboration with Plains & Prints and thank the owner/founder Roxanne Ang-Farillas for the trust”, expresses Vania, who grew up surrounded by fashion. Her paternal grandmother was Cebu’s first couturier while her mom and brother are into garment manufacturing and fashion design, respectively.

This is the second time that Vania and Plains & Prints have worked together. In 2016, Vania, along with other renowned Filipino designers, was part of The Heart of Fashion, a collaborative effort to bring awareness on breast cancer and supporting the advocacies of the ICanServe Foundation.

A perennial favorite of celebrities and the social circle for bridal wear and haute couture, “Vania captures every woman’s body and needs making it glamorous and stylish at the same time. I just love her clean lines, effortless vibe and good fit. She puts a distinct edge to her fashion, making it luxurious and elegant”, attests Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. director Che Uy, an esteemed fashionista, who is one of Vania’s loyal clients and dear friend.

Motherhood becomes her

Aside from launching her studio’s Fall/Winter Collection 2017 just this week, Vania is concentrating on exporting her bridal RTW, strengthening her online shop and producing a baby’s line in the future, encouraged by her lovable one-year old daughter Emilia Simone who is the busy working mom’s “source of inspiration and true muse”.

“Emilia inspires me to work harder. I wake up earlier than I would usually do so I can spend time with my daughter in the mornings. Actually, she wakes me up when she knocks on our bedroom door at 7:00 a.m.”, she giggles.

“I stay home in the morning and start work at 1:00 p.m. To achieve work-life balance, I delegate. I have a bigger team now who helps lessen my workload. I also spend weekends with Emilia instead of working on Saturdays”, the 2017 Zalora Style Awards’ Designer of the Year divulges.

In a moving Instagram post for her darling Emilia, Vania discloses that “for the first time, my heart gives its all, unconditionally and without limit. You are without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am filled with happiness and love”.

Indeed, motherhood has changed Vania’s life tremendously and she would not have wanted it, any other way.

"Travel-all-you-can with Davao’s Team Juanton"
Sun.Star Davao, July 29, 2017

Five teams. Seven days. One-year unlimited travel.

Cebu Pacific’s Juan for Fun (JFF) Backpacker Challenge 2017 recently gathered five intrepid teams from Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao City, for an adventure of a lifetime – an unforgettable trip exploring the Philippines’ breathtaking destinations for seven thrilling days.

After a week of non-stop escapade ably equipped with gadgets from Oppo; data plans from Smart; travel gear from Jake Bros; PhP 40,000 in pocket money; and Cebu Pacific tickets, Davao’s very own Team Juanton triumphantly emerged as JFF’s over-all champion for 2017.

JUAN FOR FUN 2017 WINNERS: Davao's Team Juanton (from left) Christian Dominic Ang,
Chyn Ira Crisostomo and Gloria Andrea 'Geia' Mendoza
Team Juanton is composed of Davao Christian High School alumni Chyn Ira Crisostomo, currently a Manufacturing Engineering and Management (with specialization in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering) student from De La Salle University-Manila; Gloria Andrea ‘Geia’ Mendoza and Christian Dominic ‘Dom’ Ang taking up Mass Communication (minor in Psychology) and Accountancy, respectively, both from Ateneo de Davao University.

Aside from clinching the top spot, the three Dabawenyos bagged PhP 60,000 during the Chippy Kada Jumpshots Challenge; and were awarded Instax cameras and a GoPro for their winning 30-second Smart Communications video entry. What a sweep!

In this Q and A, let’s hear from these youthful wanderlusts as they reveal how gallivanting around our beautiful country became a barkada trip they will endlessly treasure!

Why do you think traveling is important?
“We think traveling is important because we get to step out of our comfort zones and explore places that we’ll never be able to see if we only stayed in one place. By traveling, we get to meet strangers who are kind and will even get out of their way to help us; eat food and delicacies that may sometimes taste weird but are really great; and try new things that will push us to our limits. Traveling with each other as friends also makes our bond stronger. We get to know what each person likes/dislikes and how they are with things.”

When did you start traveling as a barkada?
“Our first trip was when we were in 4th year high school. We attended a Hillsong concert together in Manila. After that, we traveled to different places either by land, boat or plane. We would go on road trips to Mati or Samal, fly together to Bacolod and Manila and basically, anywhere we could think of”.

What made you decide to join the Juan for Fun (JFF) Backpacker Challenge?
“It was just something that we wanted to try and didn’t really expect to get into. It was fun making the audition video and we just waited and see what would happen from there.”

Image may be NSFW.

Why did you name your group Team Juanton?

“We were just thinking of possible team names that can have the word “Juan”. Our choices included Juanted (Wanted) and Juanton (Wanton) but we went with the latter. After thinking of Juanton, we realized that since we all had Chinese blood, Juanton (Wanton) was a perfect fit!”

What were the activities during the JFF?
“The top 10 teams had to go the Juan for Fun Academy in Manila where different speakers talked about vlogging, blogging, itinerary creation, etc. During the “Manila Challenge”, we were assigned to different locations in Manila. Within the day, we uploaded photos and a video on social media.

Then, the Top 5 teams were given a PhP40,000 budget for 7 days. Our team went to Dumaguete for 3 days (Valencia, Siquijor and Apo Island); Cebu for 2 days; and Legazpi for 2 days. We listed down all the activities we did each day, including the expenses. The more activities, the better.

The organizers also required us to upload photos on our Instagram with the hashtags #JuanForFun2017 and #JFFTeamJuanton. In addition, we were given various challenges that were written in a booklet. For example, “Climb a mountain and take a panorama view” or “Create a vlog doing a local craft”.”

What do you think made you qualify as one of the top five teams?
“We had creative concepts for our photos and videos and were energetic to go to different places and do many activities for points. Most importantly, we didn’t stop praying so God was always on our side.”

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
What were the most memorable experiences of this adventure?
“Swimming with the turtles in Apo Island; seeing Mt. Mayon for the first time; driving a habal-habal around Dumaguete because it was Dom's first time to drive one; and of course, receiving the award as the ultimate backpacker for 2017.”

What were the challenges you encountered along the way?
“Waking up early. Most of the time, we needed to stay up late to plan for our next day's itinerary and we had a very early call time at 5:30am. Also, budgeting was a problem. We started with 40k and we thought it was a big amount but along the journey, even paid comfort rooms were expensive so we really had a hard time allocating and budgeting our money to survive the 7-day challenge.”

Do you have any target number of cities that you wish to visit in one year? (I read that the last winner had 70 trips!)
“If it's possible, we would like to beat him! No, just joking! The former winner was actually our ‘content’ (the person who took our photos that became the property of Cebu Pacific) during the contest and we became really close. Since we're students, we’ll try and travel every weekend. Hopefully, we'll be able to maximize the unlimited flights for a year.”

What cities would you like to visit for one year?
“First, we are going to travel together back to Legazpi to thank the people who helped us like our tour guide/driver, Kuya John, and to the ATV operators who gave us a big discount. And we are planning to go to Bali, Indonesia together but I think there are future flights where we are going to travel individually.”

What is your message for next year’s Juan for Fun (Year 7) contestants?
“Don't be afraid to try, test your limits, push yourself and always pray!”

Davao Math whiz wins in India

“Davao math whiz wins in India”
Sun.Star Davao, August 12, 2017

In the recent India International Mathematics Competition (InIMC), Team Philippines comprised of 34 students from different public and private schools impressively bagged a total of 26 medals.
With one gold, eight silver and seventeen bronze medals, including ten merit certificates, Dr. Simon L. Chua, the chief operating officer and co-founder of the non-government organization Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Philippines and delegation head, praised the Filipino math geniuses for their commendable performance.

"With your achievement, you made not only your respective families and schools but also your country proud. It likewise reaffirmed that Filipino math wizards rank among the best in the world," Dr. Chua says in an interview.
The other participating countries included Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, and host India.

MTG has been in the forefront in promoting excellence in math education and training and was responsible for preparing Team Philippines in the prestigious competition.

The country's lone gold medal in the InIMC came from the Philippines’ Team C members Enzo Rafael Chan of Bayanihan Institute; Kristen Steffi Teh of Grace Christian College; Sean Matthew Tan of Jubilee Christian Academy and Cassidy Kyler Lao Tan of Davao Christian High School.

GOLD MEDALISTS at the India International Mathematics Competition (InIMC). (From left) Team Philippines’ Cassidy Kyler Tan (Davao Christian High School), Kristen Steffi Teh (Grace Christian College), Enzo Rafael Chan (Bayanihan Institute), and Sean Matthew Tan (Jubilee Christian Academy).
Aside from his team’s gold medal victory, twelve-year old Dabawenyo Kyler who is currently a Grade 7 student won a bronze medal in the individual category.
Kyler is no newbie in clinching top spots in international competitions. Aside from his local and national math medal hauls, he has previously competed and won in math tilts in Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia. In addition, the batch valedictorian was a perfect scorer and prize awardee during the 2016 Australian Mathematics Competition.

It was Kyler’s DCHS teacher Rosnie Buenaventura who first discovered his extraordinary gift in math. “When I was in Grade 1, I enjoyed doing math puzzles and riddles. Ma’am Rosnie saw my interest and would give me math problems to solve at the back of my notebook. She encouraged me to do math trainings to hone my skills.  And, since then, math became a part of my life”, Kyler recalls.

“I trained at the Rigid Math Training Center every Saturday.  I also joined Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines’ programs and activities”, shares Kyler who enjoys swimming, biking, music and playing drums and computer games.

The future scientist/businessman credits his achievements to God’s guidance and his interest in math. “I also owe it to my intensive trainings, hard work and determination. And, of course, the relentless support of my parents, trainers, teachers, and friends”, he adds.

“Math is fun. It is used daily in our life.  Like what Thomas Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”. Math just needs practice.  Like any other sports, practice makes perfect”, the bubbly Kyler discloses.

It’s not only about winning

If you think that Kyler is the only math whiz in the family, then, you are in for a big surprise. His two other younger sisters, Chloe Kimberly (10 y.o.) and Chelsea Kristanna (8 y.o.) also won gold and silver medals, respectively, at the 2017 International Mathematics Wizard Challenge in Xiamen, China last summer.

Besides their innate talents in math and perseverance, a significant part of the siblings’ success is the all-out support of their parents, Kenneth Mark and Cristy Tan.

“I have to manage my time to be with them during their trainings and competition. I drive them every day during their trainings in Manila and maximize the summer by planning road and food trips during weekends. I also study and research on the places and countries they have to go to, to ensure their safety”, details Kenneth.

But, all these sacrifices are well worth it when Kenneth sees his kids enjoying themselves while learning. “It’s not always the winning that is the most important, as long as I know that they did their best in the competition”, he intimates.

What is the Tans’ secret in raising kids who love math?

“Show math as something fun and useful.  Support your children and motivate them. You should have focus just like driving. There are many roads, detours or alternate routes that will lead you to your destination and like math, there are many solutions to solve a puzzle or reach a correct answer. The fun there is if you discover the shortcuts!”, the hands-on dad smiles.

Up, up and away, Supermoms!

 “Up, up and away, Supermoms!”
Sun.Star Davao, September 9, 2017

Supermoms, it’s time to tune in to the first-of-its-kind Philippine radio station!
With niche programming for mothers and women and supported by dads, families as well as communities all over the archipelago, multi-awarded Mom’s Radio on the FM band is operated by Southern Broadcasting Network.
It is broadcasted in five key provinces, namely, Davao (DXSS 97.9), Cebu (DYAP 88.3), Bacolod (DYCP 90.3), Laoag (DWSN 97.9) and Vigan (DWIS 98.9).
“The radio station has been around for a while but went on hiatus for a few years until its awakening last year”, says Dennis “Big D” Poliquit who has over 20 years of experience in radio and is a proud dad of five kids, with two sets of twins. His show, “Man of the House” with co-host Benjie Cotaoco, airs from Monday to Friday, 12 noon to 3:00 p.m.

Intentional parenting

Joining the daddies is “Mommy Georgia” or Georgia Cotaoco with her morning show “Breakfast with Moms” every Monday to Friday, 7am-9am. She considers being a devoted mom to her two sons as one of her life’s passions. Together with her husband Benjie, they advocate intentional parenting by inculcating values that please God.

But, that’s not all what Mom’s Radio has in store for mommies. Open to moms, soon-to-be moms, single moms and those who assumed the roles of a mom in the family, the station has also organized the Supermoms Club, a “gathering of like-minded women who aim to equip and empower women, especially moms”.

“Many moms just try to wing it being a mom. But, we want to let other moms know that there are also other moms going through what they are going through. They are not alone. We give information on how to care for themselves and their families through the radio shows and the Supermoms Club”, explains Mommy Georgia.

“In addition, we give attention to marriage as well, including how to raise kids together. We know the family is being attacked and we need to protect the basic unit of society by reiterating the importance of marriage, intentional parenting and the family”, she details.

Other Supermoms Club projects include medical missions, feeding programs, school supplies’ donations, free medical checkup and pampering for mommies, among others.

Supermoms Club Davao

Recently, the first ever Supermoms Club Davao officers were inducted during Mom’s Radio’s Roadshow held at SM City Davao.

Heading the Supermoms Club-Davao Chapter is president Joey Sy-Domingo, one of Davao’s premier voice talents and professional hosts. The dynamic mom of one believes that “empowering moms is of prime importance because mothers are such influential role models for their children”.

Happy Skin x Sanrio Characters = Perfect Partnership

“Happy Skin x Sanrio Characters = Perfect Partnership”
Sun.Star Davao, September 23, 2017

Back in the day when malls were unheard of in Davao, our family’s go-to place for grocery and department store finds was a one level shopping hub.

At 8 years old, I would excitedly accompany my mom to Felcris (Sales branch) while she did her grocery. Before leaving, I would longingly gaze at the endearing Sanrio items on display. The Hello Kitty, My Melody and Little Twin Stars memorabilia perpetually looked oh-so-enticing but, alas, I was not allowed to buy them, save during a few special occasions.

During the unforgettable ‘I-hit-the-jackpot’ moments when receiving these lovable characters as birthday or Christmas gifts, I would carefully and proudly line them up inside my glass cabinet at home with my other precious Sanrio loot.

Now, that I’m in my 40s, imagine my delight when I heard that one of my favorite skin-caring makeup brands, Happy Skin, and Sanrio have collaborated to bring some of our most beloved pop culture icons to life through makeup.

Gift of happiness

“Sanrio brings back childhood memories to adult women. The brand has been present for almost 40 years in the Philippines. So many Filipinas grew up having Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Little Twin Stars as part of their everyday lives”, shares Happy Skin co-founder Rissa Mananquil-Trillo in a press statement.

“There are a hundred ways to have Sanrio characters in your life—through stationery, stuffed toys, little accessories and even clothes and bags—and finally now through Happy Skin, Sanrio’s first local cosmetics partner in the Philippines”, Rissa continues.

On the other hand, Happy Skin co-founder Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez enthuses that “just like how Happy Skin spreads happiness through makeup that cares for the skin, Sanrio is also very much founded on the idea of giving gifts that bring the biggest smiles—perfect for the holidays!”.

“Sanrio has always believed that a small gift can bring happiness and friendship to people of all ages. It’s the foundation of what they do. “And, happiness is also at the core of the Happy Skin brand!”, attests Rissa.

Perfect partnership

Did you know that the Philippines was actually the first country to carry Sanrio products outside Japan? No wonder Filipinos have the longest love affair with Hello Kitty, My Melody and Little Twin Stars which makes this collaboration with Happy Skin the perfect partnership!

“Sanrio has some of the most passionate fans, so we really wanted to do right by these iconic and best-loved characters”, divulges Jacqe.

With an array of 23 different products for the face, lips, and nails, the Happy Skin x Sanrio Characters is Happy Skin’s biggest collection to date.
Lippie sets take the shape of hearts and stars as a homage to the characters while the colors of the blush powders, sponges, gel polish, and lippies echo the characters’ unique color palettes. In addition, even the shade names were selected based on each character’s personality and interests.

This holiday season, give the gift of happiness or better yet, indulge and treat yourself to one of the finest skin-caring makeup with Happy Skin and Sanrio!

In Davao City, the Happy Skin x Sanrio Characters is exclusive to Chimes Boutiques along Gov. Sales St.

Metro at Cinco: Healthier families just get better

“Metro at Cinco: Healthier families just get better”
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 7, 2017

Finding out that there is no available room when your loved one needs to be urgently confined in a hospital is an absolute nightmare for any parent.

In 2010, Davao City was hit by a dengue epidemic which caused a serious shortage of hospital beds. I’ve personally known of some families who let their kids stay in their homes monitored by a doctor or nurse as hospitals could no longer accommodate them during that crucial period.

It was also around this time that a group of health professionals and investors saw the need to meet Davao’s growing demands in quality health care. Thus, in 2012, the Metro Davao Medical and Research Center, Inc. (MDMRCI) or more popularly known in Davao City as Metro Hospital, opened its outpatient clinic and services to the public. These included the Laboratory, Diagnostic Radiology Imaging Center, Cardiovascular and Neurology Unit, and Pharmacy.

In 2013, Metro began operating its eight-story modern hospital. It offered a comprehensive range of medical and paramedical services aside from being a clinical research center.

Family-friendly hospital

Five years later, Metro has become one of Davao’s most reliable family-friendly hospitals with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and the home of competent doctors and staff, not to mention its accessible location and convenient parking area.

The 135-bed Metro Hospital is Department of Health (DOH) and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Phil Health) accredited, and boasts of “bigger rooms and wider beds”, plus its no surcharge and no holiday rates advantage.

Metro Hospital has a naturally-ventilated building which is very welcome news for patients and hospital visitors (especially the elderly and children) as good ventilation and adequate sunlight lessens the risk of infection. In addition, special units are maintained by positive and negative air pressure ventilation.

Advocating healthy lifestyle

“Metro Hospital refers to its outpatient building as “Health Science and Wellness Center,” mainly because they want the hospital and medical center to be an advocate of healthy living, apart from providing treatment to the sick”, says Metro Hospital Chief of Clinics Dr. Jett Lu.

MDMRC Hospital Chief of Clinics, Dr. Jett Lu
“What makes the facility different from others is that it provides proper guidance to people to help them attain a healthy lifestyle. The center prides itself with doctors specializing in aesthetic and anti-aging medicine, hair and scalp diseases–hair transplant and restoration, gynecologic oncology, sleep medicine, hematology, and other specialties of different clinical departments”, he elaborates.

“There is a total of 109 clinics covering majority of the subspecialties.  Included in this center are a spa, diabetes center, weight management, hearing center, reading, occupational and developmental therapy, dialysis center, and rehabilitation center”, adds Dr. Lu.

Health care with a heart

Committed to provide excellent healthcare services to its patients, the dedicated people behind Metro Hospital proudly assure that they offer “Health Care with a Heart”.

“The Diabetes Ambulatory Care and Wellness Center does not just give treatment to people with diabetes. They also have counseling to the families and relatives of the patient for them to fully understand the situation and bearings of the patient”, details Dr. Lu.

In addition, Metro Hospital’s Cancer Center is one of the hospital’s premier centers. “We know cancer treatment is expensive.  A day-stay at the Cancer Center is thus provided in Metro, where patients need not be admitted to undergo chemotherapy, transfusions and infusions”, cites Dr. Lu.

“Highly skilled and compassionate staff man each cubicle of the unit to provide all the special needs of cancer patients from diagnostic, therapeutic, counseling and support as we win them back to health in a sterile and friendly environment.  All our adult and pediatric oncologists, hematologists and immunologists have been trained overseas”, Dr. Lu shares.

Metro at Cinco

Metro Hospital recently commemorated its 5th year anniversary celebration with the theme, “Metro @ Cinco, High Five! Healthier Families Just Got Better”, at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.

The affair was an unforgettable gathering of Metro Hospital’s doctors, medicalstaff, and personnel to celebrate the institution’s continued success for the past five years. Doctors Lara Torno, Jessie Orcasitas, and Mae Gallardo acted as the evening’s engaging hosts.

“Shiloh sets sail at 7”
Sun.Star Davao, October 21, 2017

Much like the unwavering Disney character Moana, Shiloh Rae Digal is fondly described by her loved ones as a risk taker, imaginative, and headstrong.

Born prematurely at 7 months old, Shiloh came to the lives of her dear parents Jun and Lorna “Yaya Lorn” Digal after ten years of marriage. “Seven years ago, we lost hope of having a child. My husband and I went through a lot of difficulties. Every time the work-up was unsuccessful, we ended up frustrated”, Yaya Lorn recalls in the vernacular.

Then, one day, as Yaya Lorn was riding a jeepney, she saw a kid with special needs. She silently prayed to God that if it was His will, to bless her and Jun with a child. The well-loved longtime household manager promised that whatever the child’s condition would be, she would wholeheartedly accept it. After a month, Yaya Lorn had a pleasant surprise----she was six weeks pregnant. Indeed, by faith all things were possible!

Collaborative love

Shiloh, the Digals’ most awaited blessing, recently celebrated her 7th birthday with a Moana-themed party adoringly organized by her multi-talented Davao Christian High School teacher Lyn Constantino at the Bonhomie Leisure and Resort in Mabini, Davao Oriental.

“We chose this venue because it resembled the scenery in Moana’s ‘Motunui’ and had a   very relaxing island vibe”, explains the energetic Teacher Lyn.

With only two weeks to prepare for the affair, Teacher Lyn collaborated with equally artistic church workers from the Panabo Christian Community Church headed by Malachie Dela Rosa and Nova Leopardas, and her fellow DCHS co-worker Edgar Verano who did the impressive life-sized styrofoam Moana characters of Maui, Hei Hei and Pua.

Shiloh even had a captivating Moana-inspired birthday photo shoot with ‘Maui’ (a.k.a. Ryan James Nagayo) in full-body faux tribal tattoo and armed with a magical fish hook stunningly captured by Marlon Guillano Photography.

The ocean is calling

Aside from being the busy hands-on event and photo shoot planner, Teacher Lyn acted as the vibrant party host and hilarious game master who brought the house down with her amusing games which included the ‘Island Dance’ and ‘Bring It to Te Fiti’.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Jei Digal bagged the best costume (male category) for his ingenious “Hei Hei” costume while Juliet Digal Won was the female winner for her ethereal “Te Fiti” get-up. A special award was likewise received by Cherry Digal for the “Sina: Moana’s Mom Look-Alike” contest.

For the giveaways, Yaya Lorn, who has traveled to different countries with the Ong family through the years, shared her vast collection of hotel slippers and toiletry sets gorgeously wrapped in colorful packaging. In addition, the Digal family innovatively turned shells handpicked from Digos into welcome leis for the attendees.

When the cheerful celebrant blew the candles on her three-dimensional Moana birthday cake beautifully created by Daisy Jane Cimafranca, Teacher Lyn asked what her birthday wish was; to which the adventurous Shiloh swiftly exclaimed, “I wish I can go wherever I want!”.

Undeniably, in signature Moana fashion, Shiloh has set sail for life’s exciting adventures at   7!

Grateful at 25: CBB celebrates years in the service

“Grateful at 25 : CBB celebrates years in the service”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 4, 2017

Center for Brighter Beginnings, Inc. (CBB), the pioneer in specialized Early Childhood Education in Davao City, celebrates its 25th founding anniversary this 2017.

“It all started with a small dream of having a preschool with various learning areas, a simple playground, and developmentally appropriate materials for the classroom. I soon realized that the only way to dream is to dream big. And, these big dreams cannot be rushed”, says CBB president and school director Rossa Charissa Omac-Gavino who is fondly called as “Teacher Chari”.

So, she took several trainings and employed research-based programs to create a curriculum that incorporated tested and brilliant strategies in determining what to teach and how to teach young minds.

“Perseverance, passion, teamwork, and the constant pursuit forexcellence, have brought CBB to be regarded as the city’s premiere preschool that it is today. Our success is a manifestation that teamwork makes the dream work”, enthuses the CBB president.

“I genuinely believe that excellence is what CBB stands for because I have seen the exceptional human beings who have all learned the CBB way and I have heard first-hand testimonials from parents attesting that our way works. It is this constant and consistent striving for excellence that has gained the trust of stakeholders and propelled CBB along these twenty-five glorious and remarkable years”, happily shares Teacher Chari.

Homage

To pay homage to CBB’s success in the last 25 years, a Grand Alumni Homecoming entitled “CBB @ 25: A Homecoming, Tribute, and Celebration”, with Chelsea Logistics as the event presenter, was held at the Davao Convention and Trade Center with no less than President Rodrigo R. Duterte as the guest of honor.

“It was truly a night of nostalgia through songs and dances, as all the presentations allowed the audience to look back and reminisce on CBB’s humble beginnings and its successful journey to its first 25 years”, describes Teacher Chari.

CBB alumna Chelsea Denise Uy talked about how CBB has been part of her life. And, how in the future, when they, CBB Babies, all have their own careers and making a big impact in Philippine society, will make CBB proud and represent their first school in a good way.

In her speech, Chelsea said "I truly envision a future of women and men working hard, changing the Philippines for the better, and for the child in them to always remember being a CBB student. That once, they themselves were learning and striving in this school and they were making their parents and teachers proud as they were growing up".

Beautifully styling the anniversary venue was Annie Paz-Lim and her dynamic team. On the other hand, LCB Performing Arts Center Foundation, Inc. amazingly choreographed the various production numbers.

Giving back

The homecoming, considered as the highlight of CBB’s year-long observance of its anniversary, also helped fund the heart of this celebration---service to the community.

Traditionally, CBB has conducted several trainings, for free, to assist public school and daycare center teachers in teaching preschoolers and pupils in the early grades.

“CBB has been steadfast not only in providing the best early childhood education to its students but also in committing itself in uplifting preschool education for the marginalized sectors of our community and even in the far-flung provinces of Mindanao”, narrates Teacher Chari.

Through the offices of the City Mayor and the 1st District Congressman of Davao City, the Local Government Units of Digos City, Mati City in Davao Oriental, Davao Del Norte and Compostela Valley, CBB has conducted trainings for public school and daycare center teachers and provided them with the necessary classroom materials and resources to implement specialized programs in beginning reading and writing.

For this momentous 25 years, CBB conducted this training on a grander scale with the support of Chelsea Logistics and the City Government of Davao.

“Six hundred and fifty (650) teachers from the City Social Service and Development Office, the beneficiary of the anniversary show, representing all the daycare and child-minding centers in Davao City were given free six-week training sessions on Early Literacy. The topics included the Lindamood Bell Learning Processes, the Handwriting Without Tears, and CBB’s very own “Musical Letter Sounds” program”, details Teacher Chari.

“CBB would not be what it is today without the people who played such important roles in this journey to silver. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude to my teachers who have been with me since the very beginning and to the team that I have now; the loyal CBB parents who believed in our vision and who always support us even after their children have graduated; and to our CBB babies who continually make us proud. Thank you, everyone. I look forward to more years of sharing this exciting journey!”, ends the passionate school director.

NATION BUILDING

Launched in 1976, the CGSMS “highlights the Girl Scout’s role in nation building as exemplified by the Chief Girl Scout and her distinguished leadership and vital contribution to nation building. It is a continuing incentive that Senior or Cadet Girl Scouts can aspire for as they become actively involved in the conduct of the community and national affairs.”

The scheme recognizes Senior and Cadet Girl Scouts who “meet the criteria for outstanding service to their community. It is built on the Girl Scout’s concept of developing the total Scout, making her well-rounded in all aspects – spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and social.”

MORE THAN MEDALS. In her speech, Cadet Girl Scout Halle Andrea Java from the North Cotabato Girl Scout Council shares that although the medal makes the awardees feel great, it is serving those who need their help the most that is more meaningful.
“The Chief Girl Scout Medal represents what true Girl Scouting is all about. It is an action project of the Girl Scout Promise and Law which one lives by. It is learning to put others ahead of yourself”, stated Dr. Cristina Lim-Yuson, 1st National Vice President of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (National Headquarters), in her message.

Migrants from Manila at the turn of the century, Architect Cecile Dioquino-Hidalgo had to live a life of a newly-wed mother with her baby in tow, transplanted to the then remote place of Mintal, when her husband Francis became the Campus Architect of the University of the Philippines-Mindanao.

Back then, taking care of the house as well as their only child Noe became her priority as she became a full-time mother, mentor and adviser to her unica hija.

However, the call of the arts was never far away. Davao, as a melting pot of not only different cultures but arts as well, found Cecile teaching in Lu Chin Bon (LCB) Performing Arts Center, bringing professional ballet instruction, and directing talents from babies to advanced classes.

“My ballet training started with Nida Onglengco and Sony Lopez Gonzales. I then stayed with Pinky Mendoza-Puno of the New Manila Ballet Centre for the longest time. I also took special classes with guest teachers such as Maniya Barredo, Tina Santos Whal, and William Morgan and eventually taught for the UP Extension Ballet Program as well as the New Manila Ballet Center”, Cecile reveals.

After her stint at LCB, Teacher Cecile ardently taught Theater Arts and Acting and directed shows for Musikademy before setting up her very own I-Sayaw Dance Studio in 2013.

“I-Sayaw started out with a handful of students and with the assistance of supportive parents, mounted and celebrated its very first Christmas recital. Three summer recitals later, the school proudly continues to be one of Davao’s leaders in ballet, hip-hop and tap”, says Teacher Cecile.

With Teacher Cecile’s high quality of training for its students, it is no wonder why I-Sayaw has successfully fielded finalists in the 1st and 2nd CCP National Ballet Competition as well as training students who want to join the Makiling High School for the Arts.

Recently, I-Sayaw staged its first major ballet production, “An Enchanted Evening of Dance”, inspired by the classic tale of “Beauty and the Beast”, at the Davao Christian High School Auditorium.

“My daughter Noe and I gathered and edited the music for every student and class. I even choreographed dances in my mind and slept waving my arms in the air seemingly lost in a ballroom filled with dancers”, Teacher Cecile smiles.

The passionate teacher approached every aspect of the production with gusto. Because she finished choreography way before showtime, the cast had ample preparation to perfect the dances, impressing the appreciative audience during the show.

Skillfully portraying the Beast was Joshua Sabit with Erika Almaden as the beautiful Belle. On the other hand, supporting the cast was Teacher Cecile’s husband, Francis, as Maurice, and guest dancer Toffer Alegado as Gaston. Meanwhile, Architect Michaelangelo Ebro Dakudao gladly obliged to be the engaging narrator of the show.

Ably backing up the cast were other captivating characters namely Pamela Almaden as the White and Red Rose; Paul Quiachon as Lumierre; Anya Mercader as Plumette; Sofia Inigo as the Enchantress; Annie Seo as Mrs. Potts; Iyah Cruz as Madame Garderobe; Yonex Damiel as Le Fou; Pierre Guilles as Cogsworth; PR Labirua as Philippe; Asia Trono as the fork; Mary Tongcua, Julianne Simbulan, Jastine Barnuevo and Reanna Parrucho as Chip.

“Of course, the enchantment will never be complete without showcasing the kids’ dancing which surely complemented the scenes and added to the show’s over-all flavor”, Teacher Cecile enthuses.

These included the Babies Ballet dancing as Cupcakes and Birds; Beginners Ballet 1A as Saucers and Children Villagers; Beginners Ballet 1B as Dolls, Wines, Bottles, and Ribbons; Ballet 2 as Feather Dusters and Children Villagers; as well as Adult Ballet performing as Adult Villagers; and Tap 1 and 2, as Wolves and Villagers.

Together, these remarkable performers excellently came up with a spellbinding show delighting families, friends, and the show’s beneficiary, the House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc. As promised, it was, indeed, an enchanted evening of dance!

We share photos of the show by Rey Alba, Bryan Tenorio and Cheongha Sam Yoon.

Hope springs eternal

“Hope springs eternal”
Sun.Star Davao, January 6, 2018

I see a twinkle in my friend Cheryl Leilani Mandap-Gomez’s eyes as she shares her experiences with the House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc.

My involvement with a civic organization led me to know the foundation, Davao City Cancer Fund, Inc. Through the years, I have supported the House of Hope but it was only last January 2017 when I accepted the position of fundraising manager”, narrates my high school classmate.

Being her friend for more than three decades, I’ve known Cheryl to be passionate about her work and advocacies. It is always 101 percent, or nothing at all, for this determined lady. Divine intervention must have played a role in leading her to this crucial position.

“Childhood cancer is curable. However, treatment spans a number of months and even years. Therefore, a major stumbling block in treatment and cure among Filipino children is lack of access to health care institutions that can provide multispecialty care”, says Cheryl.

She explains further thatHoHFrepresents a coming together of people-families, advocates, communities, government and child cancer networks working to provide the best possible chances of providing holistic, multidisciplinary care for children with cancer particularly from marginalized families in Mindanao.”

Where there is hope

House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc. (HoHF), formerly Davao Children’s Cancer Fund Inc., is a non-stock, nonprofit charity organization inspired by the House of Hope (HOH), which started out as anold dormitory within the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) compound.
A project in partnership with Rotary Club Waling-Waling of Davao, the HoHF building was renovated to serve as a transient home for children with cancer. Meanwhile, Kids of Hope are the children who stay at House of Hope and at the Children’s Cancer Center at the SPMC.

To date, more than 2,700 patients and 4,000 caregivers have benefited from HoHF’s clean and wholesome environment since 2007.

“HoHFhas created asignificant impact in the improved survival of most, and cure for some, children with cancer by promoting compliance to therapy and decreasing treatment abandonment. It has enhanced the quality of life of many children afflicted with this unfortunate disease”, according to a press statement.

Ball of Hope

As the fundraising manager, Cheryl finds ways to financially support the operations of HoHF. One of these recent activities is the Ball of Hope Dinner for a Cause which she successfully organized last month at the Grand Regal Hotel.

In coordination with El Bonita Events and various generous suppliers and talents such as Noel Tanza (decors); Accredo Amor Productions/Ahiabon Lao (photo and video); Rex Del Rosario (emcee); Davao Event Suppliers Association; Agdao Violin Institute and University of Immaculate Conception Orchestra; Winner and Shen Asidor (vocalists); Jose Benavides/One Stop Video Marketing (LED Wall); Lyndon Banquerigo (photo booth); Ovaltine Ong; Arnold Alvarez/Siningtala Dance Theater Company; and Mark Pague (spinner), the Ball of Hope not only entertained and satisfied the guests and the Kids of Hope with delectable food, but raised much-needed funds for the HoHF.
“I am truly grateful to the event organizer, talents, suppliers and of course, the guests, who wholeheartedly and unselfishly shared their resources and time to pay tribute to and raise funds for the Kids of Hope”, enthuses Cheryl.
Hope springs eternal
Cheryl’s love and commitment for the Kids of Hope fuel her drive to work doubly hard as the fundraising manager.
“When approaching potential HoHF donors, all we actually need is an opportunity to talk to the right people and companies, and once that opportunity is given, it becomes easy when we explain the advocacy. Some of them respond. Some do not. So, we just manage our expectations”, declares the mother of two.

She points out that there are countless ways one can do to support the HoHF. You can “Be a child sponsor; any financial need of the child in the course of his treatment will be in your account; Pledge to be a regular (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual) donor; Give a one-time donation; Celebrate special occasions at HOH, like birthdays, anniversaries, and thanksgiving; Be a coin bearer. Coin banks will be placed in your establishments; Support by buying HOH merchandise; and Tell your friends about this advocacy”.

“I urge you to join us as we revolutionize the care of child cancer in Mindanao”, concludes Cheryl.

Blossoms aglow with The Gallery and Ikebana Davao

“Blossoms aglow with The Gallery and Ikebana Davao”
Sun.Star Davao, Jan. 20, 2018

The Gallery by GCH Jewels in partnership with Ikebana International Davao Chapter 133 recently held a Special Collection Jewelry Sale at the SM Lanang Premier.

For the past six years, the two institutions have been organizing a yearly fundraiser to show the two art forms of jewelry and ikebana. Funds raised are used by the club for its yearly activities in promoting one of Japan’s oldest tradition – the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Ikebana is the well-loved Japanese art of flower arrangement. Unlike conventional way of arranging flowers, ikebana enthusiasts express their creativity within certain rules of construction. They utilize organic materials such as branches, leaves, grasses, flowers, among others, to come up with their works of art. The final ‘masterpiece’ is considered a “living thing where nature and humanity are brought together”.

The previous collaborations involved members of the Ikebana Group modeling the jewelry and ikebana arrangements scattered and displayed around the venue, but this time, they opted for simplicity and elegance.

This year, the guests were greeted by live mannequins with models Akemy James and Maria Sartirani, in red overflowing gowns by Erwin Tan, adorned by specially selected jewelry by The Gallery. Ikebana arrangements carefully created by select members of the chapter lined the entrance of the store.

On its 47th year, Ikebana International Davao Chapter 133, spearheaded by President Arlene “Jing” Puentespina, has 40 active members. Interestingly, Jing comes from a family of the biggest producers of cut flowers in the country today – Puentespina Orchids & Tropical Plants, Inc. Meanwhile, Lea Imperial, granddaughter of the chapter’s founding president Doña Carmen Soriano, is the 1st Vice President, while restaurateur and hotelier, Leticia dela Paz, is the 2nd Vice President.

Krav Maga: So that one may walk in peace

“Krav Maga: So that one may walk in peace”
Sun.Star Davao, February 3, 2018

In this uncertain world where our children are exposed to violence, bullying, and even abduction, it is no wonder that more parents are preparing their children to defend themselves.

For Frederick Villegas, a father of two, he believes that self-defense should also include avoidance. “Instead of aggression, we must first exercise restraint and choose the discipline to de-escalate conflict situations”, he says.

This is where Krav Maga, which means "Contact Combat" in Hebrew, comes into play. It is touted to be the most effective reality-based, self-defense system founded and developed originally by Imi Lichtenfeld to improve the combat abilities of Israel Defense Forces soldiers in the early 1950s.

Over the years, Krav Maga is providing self-defense solutions to a broader variety of sectors, among which are civilians, military, law enforcement, and VIP protection, among others. It is now accessible to anyone interested in learning self-defense techniques to protect themselves and their surroundings.

Imi established the first Krav Maga organization, which has become known as the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF). The organization is currently operating in over 80 countries around the world.

IKMF Davao

IKMF started in Davao City in February of 2015 and is a growing community of like-minded individuals equipped with the knowledge on how to prevent, deal with, and overcome all kinds of violence and attacks.

Recently, Retzev Instructional Philippines Corp. opened the IKMF-Davao at the RIP Gym, Wee Siu Yen Condominium Rooftop along F. Bangoy St. in Davao City.

IKMF Philippines and IKMF Davao are led by its President, Dindo De Jesus, Expert 2 Level, while currently holding the position of Regional Director for Asia of the IKMF, a Global Instructor, as well as Country Director and Chief Instructor for the IKMF Philippines. Chief Dindo, as he is fondly called, is the highest-ranking practitioner in the Southeast and East Asia.

The Chief has been actively training practitioners since 2009 and has spread the ideals of the IKMF all over the Philippines and the Asian Region.

With a newly reorganized company and four new Davao-grown Certified IKMF Civilian Instructors, namelyRyan Masong, Christian Cruz, Ivy Tan and Natalie Wee (all Graduate1 level), IKMF Davao is set to spread and pass on the art of Krav Maga to more Dabawenyos "so that one may walk in peace".

Mind and body conditioning

Melanie Torrejon was first introduced to Krav Maga by her husband Glenn. She has been practicing KM for two years now and attests that it is a good way to lose weight, boost strength and stamina, aside from the techniques that she learned. Through regular training two to three times a week, the mother of three likewise builds self-confidence, self-esteem, as well as mind and body conditioning. She also attends special trainings, seminars, and crash courses. Melanie and Glenn’s KM time together serves as a “workout date”. After all, she jokes, “the couple that sweats together, stays together”.

Meanwhile, Frederick expresses that he is fortunate enough to have the same interest in Krav Maga as his wife Pamela Toledo-Villegas. “We partnered during our first training involving releases from grabs, chokes, and rape scenarios. Training with your spouse gives you a sense of confidence that he or she is a force to be reckoned with. With the two of you combined, you could be lethal (hopefully not against each other). There were also other trainings like VIP protection that my wife and I participated in. After all, your spouse is your most valuable VIP!”, the avid photographer smiles.

Businessman Dennis Tan, a father of three girls, learned about Krav Maga through a friend. The taekwondo and aikido practitioner likes the discipline that KM teaches.
“It is not at all about fighting but how to survive and stay alive”, he stresses.

Healthy paranoia

“Aside from being considered as the most effective self-defense system available, the physical workout prior to the actual drills is, in itself, an intense cardio and mental workout.  This is intended to strengthen one's ability to stay focused on the challenge at hand, even under physical fatigue and extreme pressure.  Keeping a state of mind called "healthy paranoia" in Krav Maga heightens a person's awareness of one's surroundings, detecting and proactively avoiding potential trouble if possible, but being able to react and neutralize active threats when necessary”, Frederick points out.

“Since Krav Maga involves a lot of applications for real-life situations, one may choose to learn specific training that is most suitable for their lifestyle or occupation. A single seminar may cost an average of P1,500-2,500 depending on the scope and extent of the training.  This includes a certificate issued by the IKMF from Israel.  For those who wish to be practitioners, this involves a lengthier course to cover all techniques for a particular level.  As to gears and equipment, shin guards and groin protectors are required in some activities”, he continues.

“As parents, it is natural to be protective of our family from the evils that lurk around us.  It is prudent to add skills to that primal instinct.  Exercise restraint and de-escalation. However, if all else fail, give them hell.  As the old adage by Edmund Burke goes, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing", and of course that includes women too”.

“Krav Maga is meant for survival.  It is not a recreational sport or a display of some kind of art form.  If children can learn this discipline, they also learn to stay out of trouble”, assures Frederick.

Sisters Society: A sartorial collaboration

 “Sisters Society
 A sartorial collaboration”
Sun.Star Davao, February 17, 2018

Five stylish sisters. One creative goal.

Meet the fabulous Seng siblings – Stephanie (35), Shauna (30), Stacey (25), Trisha (23), and Tanya (19).

Their style story began when their mother started nurturing their love for fashion by evenly curating their closets with timeless and trendy pieces which allowed them to experiment and eventually discover their personal style at an early age.

FAB FIVE. The fabulous Seng siblings (from left) Shauna Seng-Yap, Stephanie Seng-Ong, Trisha Seng, Stacey Seng and Tanya Seng

“Our father was by no means a spectator in our sartorial journey. He played an active role as our critic - generous in his compliments and sincere in his observations. With our parents’ open-mindedness and influence, we’ve become five independently-minded girls with varying eyes for fashion”, declares Stephanie, a mom of four.

Creative outlet

With Stephanie, Shauna and Stacey working at their family’s hardware business, they yearned for a creative outlet.

“The hardware industry has always been male-dominated and the products we sell are all highly technical in nature. We have always dreamt of creating our own clothing brand but felt we were inadequately prepared to establish one”, says Stephanie.

When Trisha finally graduated with a Fashion Degree from De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, the Seng sisters thought it was the perfect time to jumpstart their little venture but the Lord had other plans.

Trisha felt she needed time to consider if this was the career path she was meant to take so she decided to take up short courses at the University of the Arts, Central St. Martins in London and Istituto di Moga Burgo in Milan, Italy.

“When everything fell into place, Trisha felt God was giving her the go-signal to pursue fashion as a business and the rest is history”, smiles Stephanie.

Fab five

Last week, the fab five officially launched the Sisters Society, the retail arm of Trisha Seng Design Studio, where Trisha is the Design and Crafting Director while Stephanie functions as the CEO. Meanwhile, Shauna acts as the Finance Director and Stacey, the Creative Director. The youngest Tanya, who is a Multimedia Arts student at DLSU-College of St. Benilde, serves as the Art Director.

The Sengs point out that it is difficult to encapsulate their design aesthetic into a few words because their brand is about celebrating their differences. In fact, if you meet the Seng sisters for the first time, you couldn’t tell that they were sisters.

However, with the differences in physicality come five different perspectives and style preferences. It is in these differences that they can celebrate their uniqueness and express it creatively through fashion.

Stephanie intimates that during the entire creative process, they would constantly ask themselves these questions: “Would we personally wear the final product?”; “Is it versatile?”; “Can it be worn in different ways with different pieces of clothing?”; “Will it fit girls of different shapes and sizes?”; and “Does it fit the persona of the quintessential Sisters Society girl – cool, confident, unafraid to make a statement?”.

What’s in store

“Sisters Society is still in its infancy and we still have a lot to learn in this industry, but we are eager to see what the future holds for us. The toughest challenge is how to sustain the brand, but we are fortunate to have an endless supply of visual inspiration from the world around us, not to mention, a burgeoning community of creatives and designers in Davao City who continuously share ideas and advice”, enthuses Stephanie.

“Our price points are quite reasonable considering the thought process and careful construction of our pieces. We are looking at a price range of P1,000 to P4,500. Our current collection has T-shirts that retail for P850”, she adds.

In addition, Trisha can create chic bespoke pieces for the modern woman.  “She usually allots a minimum of 4 weeks to create the dress of your dreams”, promotes the proud eldest sister.

For now, the Sisters Society is already conceptualizing their next collection and hope to continue creating stand-out pieces for their fashion-forward clientele.

Christian High Musical presents Annie and The Sound of Music

“Christian High Musical presents Annie and The Sound of Music”
Sun.Star Davao, March 3, 2018

What began as an ambitious idea among the Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship officers to stage a musical featuring Broadway hits “Annie” and “The Sound of Music” became a spectacular reality recently.

A fundraising project of the DCHS PTF for the continuous development of the DCHS Senior High School Building, the musical held at the DCHS Auditorium was one of the exciting activities lined up during the school’s 65th Year Founding Anniversary.

Like all good things, this worthwhile endeavor did not happen overnight. In fact, it was one year-in-the-making, with grueling auditions, intensive summer workshops and, last-minute rehearsals.

But, witnessing how the passionate directors were able to bring out the very best from the cast and how the officers and production staff worked hard together as a united team, the whole nerve-wracking experience became well worth it.

One direction

Training the musical’s cast whose ages range from 5 to 29 years old was no easy feat.

It was indeed an immense blessing to join forces with Nemuel Danuco, Zion’s Praise Music, Inc.’s National Events Director, who served as CHM’s dynamic overall director; and Hyacinth Kayle Solon, a DCHS grade school teacher, thespian and Kundiman singer, who took on the role as acting director.

Meanwhile, DCHS senior high school teacher and musical theater actor Benjamin Bautista acted as the voice director. Incidentally, Sir Benj, as he is fondly called, was a silver medalist (Broadway Category) in the World Championships of Performing Arts 2017 in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

Together with the PTF, these award-winning directors shared a common vision to come up with a world-class school production worthy of the audience’s precious time and money.

                         It’s a hard knock life

The Christian High Musical was equally divided into two parts with most of the delightful highlights from “Annie” and “The Sound of Music” included in each show. Daniel Carlos Tan, a DCHS alumnus and senior high school teacher, penned the engaging script adaptation.

“Annie” is a tale of a spunky orphan staying at a facility run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. She came to the life of billionaire industrialist Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks when he decides to welcome an orphan into his home temporarily to “enhance his image”. Although Annie enjoyed being pampered at the Warbucks’ mansion, she still longed for her biological parents. This prompted Mr. Warbucks to announce a search on radio offering a huge reward, which unfortunately lured unwanted impostors.

Superbly portraying the curly-haired orphan Annie was Florence ‘Orange’ Asistido with Joshua Balaga (the only teacher at the CHM) as Mr. Oliver Warbucks, Yoshiko Hirakawa as Miss Hannigan, Lara Khalija Soriano as Grace Farrell, Gabriel Vince Zablan as Rooster Hannigan, and Khloe Orillan as Lily St. Regis.

Climb every mountain

On the other hand, “The Sound of Music” is a heartwarming true story of the von Trapp Family singers, one of the world-renowned concert groups before World War II. Maria, the main character, is the tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey who works as a loving governess in the home of Capt. Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval captain with seven children. Maria did not only bring back enchanting music into the home but new love and laughter as well.

Abigail Monteagudo brilliantly starred as the playful Maria with Chang Soo Yoo as the stern Capt. von Trapp. On the other hand, Cassandra Ang, Jeff Jao, Bea Arrosas, Migue Mendoza, Mikaela Lo, Sage Tinaco and Rain Gamboa excellently played the parts of the musically-gifted von Trapp children.

They were not the only wealth of talents that the directors and PTF discovered during the entire production process though. Eager grade school to senior high school students comprised the rest of the cast. These young artists willingly juggled their studies with the rigorous demands of late-night rehearsals. However, at the end of the day, one would never see them complain or grumble. They just loved acting and singing as a group.

So, it was no surprise when the much-awaited day came, everybody gave their ultimate performance. After all, they were not only showcasing their artistic and musical gifts to the audience but more importantly, giving glory to God.

Congratulations to the directors, cast, and production team (a special shout-out to CHM’s musical coordinator Marie Lo) for the topnotch staging of the Christian High Musical! You all deserve a standing ovation and resounding applause.

The magic of summer (Kiddie Summer Workshops of Davao City 2018)

“The magic of summer”
(Kiddie Summer Workshops of Davao City 2018)
Sun.Star Davao, March 17, 2018

Around the same time last year, my children and I rejoiced at the start of summer.

My kids’ school shifted to a new schedule and moved its opening to August. So, the transition period meant five whole months of unlimited break for them.

Just imagine their excitement as they joined fun summer activities, traveled to faraway places, slept to their hearts’ desire, indulged in movie marathons, and other adventures that any working adult could only wish to experience again.

What’s magical about summer is that you know it does not last forever so one must always make the most out of it. It is the best time to travel, chill and have that well-deserved respite but in case you want to learn a thing or two, here is my personal compilation of the Kiddie Summer Workshops of Davao (Year 11)!
