Do you know that a parent has only 936 weeks between a child’s birth and graduation to influence their future?

I learned this fascinating trivia and so much more during a recent parenting seminar entitled “Train Up Your Child” by our esteemed speakers, inspiring couple Edric Mendoza and Joy Tan-Chi Mendoza. The well-attended talk was organized by the Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship.

Edric is currently the TV host, lead anchor and writer of ANC’s “On the Money”, a daily show on personal finance. He is also an edu-preneur (education entrepreneur) and a Registered Financial Planner (RFP). As a result of these education initiatives, he desires to change the world, one family at a time.

He is happily married to Joy, the eldest daughter of Pastor Peter Tan-Chi of Christ's Commission Fellowship and Deonna, an American missionary from Florida.

Joy is an awarded blogger for her well-loved site, teachwithjoy.com and an author. She is likewise an in-demand speaker for topics on marriage, parenting, and homeschooling.

Edric and Joy are extremely blessed with five beautiful children, namely: Elijah, Edan, Titus, Tiana and Catalina. Together, they champion homeschooling because they feel that this is the best way to impart their values to their children. Joy handles the academic subjects while Edric takes care of the character, mentoring of the boys and sports.

In their talk, the Mendozas creatively used the acronym of “TRAIN UP” to stress the importance of a parent’s role in shaping their children’s character and values. T is for “Think of a plan”; R for “Remember your roles”; A for “Anchor your children on God’s word”; I for “Impart values through Modeling”; N for “Nurture relationships”; U for “Utilize corrective discipline”; and P for “Pass-on a vision and pray”.

Certainly, one of the toughest challenges of being a parent is how to utilize corrective discipline to our kids.
           
Edric explains that the word “discipline” means “to create a disciple”. Therefore, discipline cannot happen effectively without discipleship and relationship. Its focus should not be on the behavior but the heart.

The father of five stresses that “obedience is for our children’s good because obedience brings blessings”. He also cites that the necessary aspects of discipline include clear commands that must be authoritative; consequences such as restrictions, loss of privileges, and, yes, spanking if necessary; and consistency.

According to the Mendozas, the reality of parenting today is that our children are growing up in a morally toxic world. Thus, it is imperative that parents control the portal, that is, we must set the boundaries for the use of gadgets/TV/internet. As a family, we should likewise develop the habit of filtering and practice a culture of open communication.

Moreover, the study of God’s word should be prioritized in order for our kids to develop convictions that are anchored on truth. The couple emphasizes that developing convictions is essential before situations present themselves and choices have to be made like “taking care of one’s body, staying pure, using their time wisely and choosing the right circle of friends”.

As the Mendozas concluded their talk, they reminded the parents that “we are not raising children but raising adults who are men and women of God”.

Indeed, being a parent is among the most difficult yet fulfilling jobs in the world.  When the time comes, nothing will make us prouder as parents than to see our children grow up to become responsible and well-rounded adults who love and honor God above anyone else.

Proverbs 22:6 aptly captures the essence of the parenting experience, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it".

“House of Laurel’s  Davao trunk show”

Exquisitely-designed clothes and accessories, good eats and a warm welcome greeted Davao’s fashionable set during the House of Laurel’s first ever Davao trunk show held recently at the Dusit Thani Residence showroom.



The House of Laurel was founded in 2000 by siblings Rajo Laurel and Venisse Laurel-Hermano. The trendy specialty boutique located in Makati City offers both couture and ready-to-wear apparel.







In a Preview magazine interview, Rajo describes his couture line as “made-to-order couture where each piece is referred to as a ‘mission’ dress designed to create a lasting impression” while he considers his off-the-rack line as “Designer Ready-to-Wear”.         




A winner of several national and international awards including FashionAsia AFMA China’s Asian Top Fashion Designer of the Year (Pret-A-Porter Category) in 2010, Rajo was once a judge on the TV hit show Project Runway Philippines.

During the trunk show, the House of Laurel brought their Cruise 2016 collection to Davao. It brilliantly showcased a distinctive design movement called Memphis which was the craze back in the ‘80s when Rajo was in his teenage years. The Magpie Memphis collection features “dizzying graphics and abstract shapes” as well as “structured silhouettes in vivid hues of chiffon, silk and crepe”.



 






In contrast to the previous spring/summer 2016 collection, The Monast, which had a clean and minimalist vibe, the Magpie Memphis colllection is more playful with its exuberant design and color.  “The calm vibe has become busy. Yet, both collections share common denominators with their well-balanced scale and genre”, details the House of Laurel in its press release. Aside from women’s clothes and accessories, the trunks show also offered something exciting for the men and kids with the Rajoman and Rajito line.
           
Among the trunk show’s happy shoppers were sisters-in-law Gay Grapa-Te and Tracy Ausin-Grapa; sassy sisters Stephanie Seng-Ong and Trisha Seng as well as Ria and Abby Gempesaw; Lisa Lim with lovely daughters Alyssa and Alyanna; Marga Montemayor-Nograles; Rochelle Rabat-Del Rosario; Bianca Barretto-Uy; Claudine Bautista; Long Pineda; Bai Siang Lim; Debbie Tan-Hao; Nini Hilario-Hao; Emma Cruz-Ng with younger sister Emily Cruz-Tiu; Corazon Ang-Tan; Mylene Yap-Aquino, Caroline Galang-Taojo; Carine Bacani; Helen Ang-Alvarez; Michelle and Dexter So with adorable daughter Heleina; Rajo’s former bridal grown client Nikki Gotianse-Tan; and many more.

 “Mom-About-Town turns 10”

In 2006, I gave birth to “two babies”. One was biological and the other, a creative outlet.

I was then a volunteer in the communications team of Gawad Kalinga and writing press releases to newspapers for this noble cause when, one day, an e-mail by our super Sun.Star Davao editor-in-chief Stella Estremera suddenly appeared in my inbox. She asked me if I was interested to be a columnist for the venerable paper. Who could refuse such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? In a heartbeat, I replied with an enthusiastic “yes!”. 

           Parenting was the topic closest to my heart so I proposed that I would focus on this.

With determination, I juggled working full-time at the family business, being a hands-on PTA mom, writing for this paper, among other responsibilities.  It has not been an easy task but looking back, it was well worth it!

Ten years after, I thank the Lord for the inspiring people I have met along the way. I am truly indebted that, through this column, their stories touched other’s lives...and mine, as well.




Among the articles that made a significant impact on me, and perhaps the readers as well, were the various parenting seminars featured (I had the privilege of helping organize most of them through my involvement with the Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship). 

           Some of them included “Motherhood….just like a pro” (Nov. 22, 2008); 


“Helping Our Children Do Well in School” (Nov. 13, 2010); 



“Are You a Tiger or an Ostrich Parent?” (June 4, 2012); 


“Practical Parenting” (Feb. 23, 2013); 


 and the recent “Train Up Your Child” (Oct. 10, 2016) by esteemed parenting experts. The invaluable lessons gained from these enabled me to become an effective hands-on and less anxious parent.


 “Our Home, Our School” (Dec. 9, 2006) was about breastfeeding advocate Alex Morris-Hao and her homeschooling advocacy. Back then, she was one of the few brave Davao moms who homeschooled her brood of three, namely: Amber (age 9), Ashley (age 6) and Allegra (age 2). A few years after, the Haos were blessed with their only boy, Nicholas.


How did homeschooling mold the Hao kids after ten years? All of them turned out to be well-rounded eager learners. Amber (now 19) got into the Ateneo de Manila University taking up literature and has found her passion in theater; Ashley (16) is a talented violinist who has staged her own solo violin recital; Allegra (12) is an avid swimmer; and Nicholas (8), a soccer enthusiast.


                          

          In “Organic Beauty for Less” (March 14, 2009), Human Nature, was then a new line of 100% organic, 100% Philippine-grown and 100% chemical-free personal care products for the whole family at very affordable prices. 


I met Anna Meloto-Wilk and her husband Dylan, when they came to Davao to establish their Mindanao branch made possible by Green Kreations, Inc. Through Anna and her sister Camille’s partnership with Gawad Kalinga, they then envisioned the GK villages to eventually become capable of producing their ingredients to the highest standards for the Human Nature line.

 Flash forward to 2016. From two kids, the Wilks are now proud parents of five, with another blessing coming soon. And, Human Nature has become a global premium brand, sourcing ingredients from world-class community organic farms in the Philippines; and providing decent livelihood to thousands of our poorest people.


And, how could I not mention the insanely imaginative themed kiddie parties, debuts and weddings staged by our very own Davao event stylists and suppliers and even Manila-based party professionals? Whether grand or simple celebrations, my column regularly highlighted the brilliant talents of this growing industry and I am looking forward to witnessing more spectacular “productions” in the future.








Readers have been sending me e-mails on how they enjoyed our family adventures in my column. I hope to continue sharing my travel tips on the memorable destinations we have visited. May they serve as an additional guide to your family’s own sojourns as well.











After a decade writing, you may have noticed that my column icon has been finally replaced. I may still be sporting the same hairstyle (teehee!), but trust me, my ten-year “Mom-About-Town” journey has changed me for the better in innumerable and intangible ways.


             My youngest daughter recently asked me if I always knew what I wanted to be when I was growing up. Honestly, I had no specific wish lists that I could think of. But, God would often open doors even without me asking. Wherever He wanted me to be at that stage of my life, I welcomed it with a grateful heart and promised to do my best for His glory.

For their continuous love and support through the years, I sincerely thank my Huang and Teves families, Sun.Star Davao family, dearest friends, loyal readers, and interviewees.

             Human Nature recently created history by becoming the 1st Asian brand to win in the prestigious Sustainable Beauty Awards.

                 “We didn’t realize that our small company, which is just 8 years old, would come this far. We just wanted to do something good, something right, and this award is an affirmation of what we are doing”,  shared Human Nature Marketing Head Wowie Meloto-Gonzalez during the awards reception held in Paris.



        The Sustainable Beauty Awards was organized by Organic Motor, a globally-recognized specialist research and consulting company for organic products and related industries. The notable competition attracts hundreds of entries yearly.
             “Launched in 2013, the Sustainable Beauty Awards echoes how green issues have gained prominence in the personal care and cosmetics industry. Categories include Sustainability Leadership, Sustainable Ingredient, Green Formulations, Sustainable Packaging and Sustainability Pioneer Award”, explained Meloto-Gonzalez. 

           Human Nature impressively bagged the Sustainability Pioneer Award for its awe-inspiring social entrepreneurship work in Asia.

       According to the National Statistical Coordination Board, “the Philippines is rich in agricultural products, yet many of its farmers are poor and mostly grow rice, with an average daily wage of PhP 156.80”.

Human Nature endeavors to change this by creating demand for high value essential oils and other raw materials. They also aim to invest in skills training, sustainable technology, infrastructure, and values formation to improve the farmers' output and quality of life.

“Through their partnerships with Gawad Kalinga and other organizations who share the same vision, they aim to develop globally-certified organic farms in the countryside that can produce excellent raw materials for Human Nature products, as well as community-based enterprises that will multiply the income of poor communities”.  


In addition, “Human Nature employs Gawad Kalinga residents from nearby communities in Quezon City and Laguna and provides fair living wages, around 70% more than the minimum wage required by law. They also make sure to provide their warehouse staff, merchandisers, and manufacturing plant personnel with regularized employment with full benefits”. 


Truly world class

       The relatively young Philippine brand bested industry leaders such as Eminence Organic Skin Care and Givaudan, a 250-year old French company producing scents and flavors. On the other hand, Weleda, a German company that has been producing natural products since 1921, was a runner-up for the category. Past recipients of the Sustainability Pioneer Award include Cruelty Free International and L’Oreal USA-Garnier.


                 “Today, we can truly say that made in the Philippines is equal to; or maybe even better than made in Germany and made in France”, Anna Meloto-Wilk, president and co-founder of Human Nature enthused.

                “The Sustainable Beauty Award is a testament to the creativity, ingenuity and hard work of the Filipino people. Our little country in the Far East, despite the problems that we continue to grapple within our society today, is paving the way to the future for kinder, more sustainable businesses especially in our industry”, she added.
Human Nature hopes that soon “there will be hundreds of community organic farms and world-class social enterprises in the Philippines providing livelihood for thousands of our countrymen”. As the proudly Philippine-made brand creates the market for their products, it believes “it can help many Filipinos rise out of poverty and into a first-world quality of life”.

“Chimes redefines luxe retail”

           There is afitness app on my mobile phone that tracks the minutes I have been active in a day. The funny thing is that the only time I reach my goal is when I step inside the mall!

           Maybe because when scouring the mall for the best finds, I rarely find everything in close proximity. I have to cross from points A to D to do my grocery, shop for clothes, drop by the bookstore, find a unique gift, etc. That’s why when I want to shop hassle-free in a flash, a visit to Chimes Boutiques with its well-curated array of brands is such a time saver for a busy mom like me. 


             The unrivaled ‘Shopping Mecca of Mindanao’ located along Governor Sales Street, recently re-opened its doors to unveil their newly renovated 37,000 square foot flagship store, in collaboration with the retail design specialist, Moss Manila.

I must admit, I am no style maven. Thankfully though, my fashion-forward dear friend Dr. Jennifer Lim, gave me an on-the-spot rundown of the featured top designers such as Maureen Disini, Charina Sarte, Patty Ang, Vania Romoff and Jeffrey Rogador while we enjoyed the fashion show creatively directed by Manila’s Ferdie Salvador.



              Their trendy ready-to-wear collection, together with Katre’s high quality leather goods and Joyce Oreña’s handmade and multi-use jewelry and accessories, were among the welcome additions to Chimes’ premium choice brands spanning beauty, accessories, ladies ready-to-wear, menswear, home and children.

“Homeschool is cool!”

            Intentional parenting is what motivates the growing number of Dabawenyo parents who decide to homeschool their kids.

            “More than the academics, we want to develop the character of our child”, intimates Reginald Cua, an industrial engineer and Rhoda Cua, a pharmacist. Both are also real estate brokers who committed to homeschool their 13-year old son Gershon Josh for three years now.


            Homeschooling is defined by the Department of Education as “a home-based education which relies on the active participation of the parent as a teacher to his child. This is a one-on-one tutorial type of teaching”.


            “Our son is able to learn what he wants and loves to learn. Except for few subjects that are deemed necessary (English, Math and Science), we are flexible as to what other areas he wants to explore”, explains Rhoda.

            For the Cuas, the best things about homeschooling include getting to know your child better and being able to correct mistakes on the spot.

Learning is fun

            On the other hand, Marty and Katherine Ponla, both registered nurses, opted to homeschool because it allowed them to instill Christian values to their two kids, Kirsty, 15 and Jesse, 13.

            Aside from this, when they were still U.S.-based, Kirsty and Jesse were assessed to be “high ability” or gifted kids. But, their regular school then could not properly accommodate their giftedness.

            “They didn't want to accelerate me or give me more advanced subjects, so I unwittingly ended up becoming a troublemaker”, laughs Kirsty.


“Because homeschooling is very flexible, my brother and I were able to study whatever we found interesting. We weren't limited to learning about things just through books. We were able to utilize many different resources in many different formats. In addition, being part of a homeschool support group allowed us to go on field trips and take classes in group settings, while online resources gave us the option to learn about whatever, whenever. Being able to use all of these, plus regular school books, made sure that learning was never boring. I guess that's what made us love learning - learning was fun!”, relates Kirsty.

Insulate not isolate
       
         Meanwhile, Dondi Alentajan, a businessman and his wife Tara, a consultant, pursued homeschooling in 2009 after they observed how remarkable the homeschooled children of their friends were.

"How confident, talented, smart, and obedient these children are! We found these homeschooled children to be so self-assured, with some of them exhibiting talents way beyond their years. My wife and I thought then, "We want our children to be the same!”, shares Dondi.



What the Alentajans love most about homeschooling is that their children’s values and self-esteem are kept intact. They have four kids, Kahil, Bu, Uno and Seia, who are aged 14, 12, 8 years old and 8 months old, respectively. “With homeschooling, we don't isolate our children but rather "insulate" them. We build up their values so when they go out into the world, they can better discern what is a good decision and what is not. They do not face peer pressure at home to be who they should or shouldn't be, and therefore grow in a nurturing environment that allows them to grow to be who they can be, within the limits of good moral values”, they happily reveal.


“Yes, you can homeschool”

The Cuas, Ponlas and Alentajans were just some of the families who participated in the recent “Yes, You Can Homeschool” conference at the NCCC Mall Activity Area. The well-attended event was organized by the Lighthouse Homeschool Network (LHN), a local organization of more than 30 homeschooling families in Davao City, and Homeschool Global.




            The homeschooling event aimed to increase awareness of what homeschooling is and debunk the popular myths about homeschooling.

       The conference was composed of three sections, namely: The “Kidpreneur” Marketplace, The Science Fair; and The Homeschooling Symposium by homeschooling advocates Edric Mendoza, the president of the Homeschoolers Association of the Phil. Islands (HAPI), and Joy Tan-chi Mendoza of the popular blog, teachwithjoy.com.







"One of the highlights of the homeschooling conference for us were seeing our children experience managing their own store and business on their own. My wife and I were truly amazed how well our children did their roles, with our eldest exhibiting excellent salesman skills, even selling out his display. On the other hand, our 8-year old son enjoyed patiently waiting for customers and properly executed a sales transaction including data recording and stock replenishment. It was such an eye-opener for them and they have since continued to pursue their business concepts”, says proud dad Dondi.



The Cuas, on the other hand, appreciated the discussion about college preparation during the homeschooling conference as they have a teenager who is preparing for his college life. “The presence of the Mendozas likewise made an impact as they are seasoned homeschoolers and it is heartwarming to see them share their personal experiences on homeschooling”, discloses Reginald.



 Kirsty, who has been homeschooled for most of her student life, sums up her learning experience: “Homeschooling doesn't have any limits - you can learn whatever you want to learn, wherever you want to learn, whenever you want to learn. It doesn't dictate specific or rigid school hours, but it also doesn't mean you can slack off. Homeschooling is definitely not limited to staying at home and studying. It's an amazing experience that I'm blessed to have had for the past 8 years of my life!”.

“Delightful Dahilayan”

The splendid sight of endless rows of pineapple elicited the biggest smiles from the kids as we leisurely drove by Camp Phillips in Bukidnon.


As if on cue, they began to playfully sing in unison, “I have a pen. I have a pineapple. Uh, pineapple pen!”. Last song syndrome (LSS) alert! They just couldn’t resist seizing the moment.


          I have always wanted to schedule a family trip to Dahilayan but just thinking about the long driving hours overwhelmed us. Fortunately, I chanced upon an awesome airline seat sale to Cagayan de Oro City which cut our travel time significantly and scored an enticing room promo as well. Finally, the much-awaited journey to Dahilayan was a go!



         Arriving at Dahilayan enchantingly felt like we were in Baguio or Tagaytay with the ubiquitous pine trees and cool mountain breeze. It was still early for our check-in time at Pinegrove Mountain Lodge but luckily, there was already a well-appointed room waiting for us even on a bustling Saturday.








Adventure awaits

          After settling in, we trooped to the ticket booth to purchase our ZipXtreme package at Dahilayan Adventure Park. For the price of PhP1,200, the special discounted package included the 840m zipline; 320m + 150m Zipline; Dropzone; Python Roller Zipride and Ropes Course. Other rides at ‘Mindanao’s Favorite Extreme Playground’ were the adrenaline-pumping Sky Tower Base Jump and Flying Lizard Canopy Glider.




       With an exhilarating drop of 100 meters, we zoomed through the breathtaking rainforest  canopy at 60-80 kph via ‘Asia’s 1st longest dual zipline’. 




After braving this incredible zipline, the shorter and more kid-friendly version came next.





               Our action-packed morning left us famished so we took a breather and devoured our late lunch at Pinegrove’s restaurant. 




           The filling meal provided us the much-needed energy boost for our 3rd activity, the Tower of Power Ropes Course, a 12-stage high and low wire obstacle course with a multisided rockwall to boot. Among the four of us, it was my nimble 10-year old daughter who effortlessly moved from one obstacle to another.







  
               Meanwhile, the 500-meter Python Roller Zipride, “Asia’s first zipline roller coaster”, allowed us to zip, rattle, roll, drop, swing and bounce with wild abandon, much to the enjoyment of our thrill-seeking family.




               Our culminating challenge for day one was the Dropzone, a heart-pounding 120-feet freefall ride touted to be the Philippines’ first extreme pendulum swing of its kind. Pulled up by a crane then dropped suddenly at lightning speed and swooped to within feet of the manmade lake’s surface only to repeat the intense swinging motion again, in a crazy pendulum style, gave my poor eardrums a shock as my partner (a.k.a. beloved eldest daughter) screamed her lungs out.

 Wanderlust

            After dinner, roasting s’mores over an indoor charcoal grill while sipping our comforting hot cocoa drink capped the magical foggy night. 




             It was still a few weeks before the Christmas season during our visit. But, the Pinegrove’s rustic log cabin interiors, festive Christmas pine tree and decors coupled with the nippy evening air prematurely unleashed our Yuletide spirits.







               The following day, we decided to sleep in and take our brunch before indulging in another fun-filled afternoon, this time, at Dahilayan Forest Park. 



             With an entrance fee of PhP50 for kids and PhP100 for adults, this favorite family destination offered various rides and activities such as the Luge (PhP600 solo/PhP800 tandem), ATV (PhP750), Buggy (PhP1,000 for 2), Zorbit (PhP250), Barrel Train (PhP100), Bungee Bounce (PhP150), Trampoline (PhP50), Mini Golf (PhP150), Tree Top Adventure (PhP250) and Hanging Bridge (PhP100).










                We spent a stimulating hour at the safari-themed miniature golf with our active girls acing a hole-in-one each, or should I say a ‘Hole-in-Huang’. Towards the end of our golf game, the fog thickened and rain began to fall so hard that all our plans for the remaining hours were cancelled. 


             That is the peculiar thing about Dahilayan. You can wake up to a sunshiny day then, without any moment’s notice, gray skies and rain appear. However, the torrential downpour may dampen our itinerary but definitely, not our family’s wanderlust.





Road trip

               On the day we were set to leave, we woke up extra early to try out the luge. After crossing the hanging bridge, our punctuality paid off as we were the first ever riders for the day. 






            Maneuvering the freewheeling gravity cart on an asphalted trail was, in the words of our kids, “Awesome!”. 




              Two rounds of luge after, we enjoyed a quick breakfast before meeting our driver Gerald from LAX Shuttle at 10:00 a.m. 



            Since our flight from CDO to Davao was rescheduled, we booked a van instead to exclusively bring our family and I all the way from Manolo Fortich to Davao.


            The expected exhausting ride back to Davao on a holiday turned out to be a pleasurable one with good roads, zero traffic, and an efficient driver. Before we knew it, by 2:00 p.m., we were at the Bukidnon-Davao Highway, and by 4:00 p.m. at our very own home, heads and hearts full of prized memories from our delightful Dahilayan adventure.

The struggle is real.

As we age, our metabolism slows down and because of this, we have to rethink our diet and sedentary lifestyles.

Until I was 42, I have been amazingly blessed with an ideal weight (for my height) no matter how much I ate or did little exercise. However, my body had a way of seeking revenge. Last summer, all the eating binges finally took their toll and there was, for the first time, stubborn excess pounds that just wouldn’t budge.

I resolved to eat lesser carbs, junk food and sweets. I continued to stay away from soft drinks. I also did some tweaks in my work space that allowed me to use a standing desk for a few hours. Thankfully, these subtle changes helped improve my well-being.

For this article, be inspired by these three passionate moms who victoriously battled their health challenges, and empowered themselves to be FIT and FAB this 2017!

Can you share to us your old lifestyle?

“I was not a heavy eater so portion was not an issue, but I was a fan of junk food like chips, ice cream, French fries, creamy shakes, anything fried as well as high-carb food like white rice and pasta.


I had basically no exercise aside from the daily walks to and from, and, do household errands. My clothes were usually baggy, oversized shirts from plus size stores and nothing from local off the rack. My medical test/s came up within the normal limits, except for being obese/extremely overweight.”


What made you decide to change into a healthier lifestyle?

Mainly because I would love to have my old lifestyle back without restrictions. I was active in my younger years. I used to engage in different sports like playing competitive golf. I also loved to dive, be in the water and explore the islands, I used to love going to the gym and lift. I did want to be confident and wear anything under the sun as well but mostly importantly, I would like to set a good example to my 5 kids to live a healthy and active lifestyle.”

How long did it take for you to notice the difference?

“I did a strict Cohen Diet for 6-7 months and basically lost around 60 lbs.”

Describe your new lifestyle.

“I eat low carb/high protein and hydrate. I do portion my food especially when I eat out (special occasions and Sundays) and try to pick the healthier option on the menu. I try to stay away from buffet or fast food chains.

I exercise 3 times a week (1.5 hours average) but I try to go 4 times if I can. I rotate boxing, spinning, running and HIIT/Functional Training because I enjoy them!

When it comes to fashion choices, sky is the limit but I still stick to my all-time faves which are athletic and loungewear.

My Peak Heart Rate and Resting Heart Rate during stamina training has improved significantly, thus, playing rough with my 5 kids is a breeze. I don’t have to stop and catch my breath. As to medical test/s, fortunately, I did not really have that many issues to start with, anyway.”

What worked for you to make the transformation possible?

“I did the Cohen Diet until I reached my comfortable goal weight (not necessarily ideal weight as per “charts”). When I reached my target weight, I ate healthier, even on cheat days. I did calorie counting (calorie in versus calorie out). I moved and trained with a trainor/fitness coach. I never cheated reps.

Tech that worked for me included Apple Watch paired with Polar Heart Rate Monitor, MyFitnessPal App, Nike + App for travel. And, I never forgot to hydrate!”

How do you feel now?

“Confident and strong”

What is your advice for other parents who want to be fit and fab this 2017?

“When you stumble, RESET immediately!”

Can you share to us your old lifestyle?

“Ever since college, I've tried to stay away from red meat. I preferred to eat chicken, seafood and vegetables but I do have a sweet tooth. I had to eat dessert after a meal, and I ate rice. 

When I transferred to Davao, I joined my husband regularly in the gym. I joined aerobics, Yoga and cardio exercises. I started gaining weight after I had a baby so I had to change clothes sizes. Style choice was not really limited but I had to buy bigger sizes.”

What made you decide to change into a healthier lifestyle?

“After my second baby, I was diagnosed as hypertensive which I got through genetics because both of my parents’ side had it. My doctor said I got it really early; in my mid- 30's. Due to my health condition, I had to be more careful with what I ate and lessen my intake of sweet treats. Diabetes was also a health issue. My doctor told me to exercise regularly to take care of my heart.”


Describe your new lifestyle.

“I still prefer seafood and chicken. I was introduced to the Paleo lifestyle by my Crossfit friends. Paleo lifestyle is a way of eating that recalls the more natural way that human beings eat prior to the rise of highly processed modern food. In other words, Paleo is to eat real, whole food with no preservatives. I'm not really hardcore into the diet. Sometimes, I get to eat white rice, cakes and grains but I avoid processed food.


I bake Paleo treats on the side called Paleo Palate wherein I use gluten-free alternatives like almond and coconut flour and use natural sweeteners like honey and coconut sugar. I do eat out but I choose what to eat wisely.


I also do Yoga and Pilates. I used to be really conscious of showing my arms in sleeveless tops and dresses but now I've become more confident. Going a size lower really is awesome.

Health wise, I'm still hypertensive with maintenance but it's in a normal stable level. All blood work is normal.”

What worked for you to make the transformation possible?

“I think that with constant exercise and being careful and conscious with what I ate really helped with the transformation”.


How long did it take for you to notice the difference?

“I feel that age does really matter. In my 40's, I find that it takes time to really lose weight because the metabolism is much slower. It's a slow process but I'm getting there. And, now I'm seeing changes as my body becomes more fit.” 

How do you feel now?

“I feel really good. I don't tire easily and I don't feel my age!”


What is your advice for other parents who want to be fit and fab this 2017?

“They should love their body by nourishing it with healthy natural good food, and to exercise. Go find one that makes you happy, be it be Zumba, Yoga, TRX, Crossfit or running. It's important to take care of our health and our body because it's the only one we've got.”

Can you share to us your old lifestyle?

“Five years ago, my weight was 128 pounds. I spent the whole day just waiting in school for my only son. But, sometimes, I would go out with other mommies while the kids were having classes. Eating out was our form of bonding. We loved to eat at buffet restaurants.

In addition, while waiting in school, we would eat snacks even if we were not hungry. As long as somebody offered food, I would readily accept it. However, every school year, I noticed that I was getting bigger until I reached 158 pounds.”

What made you decide to change into a healthier lifestyle?

“Being overweight was very challenging. I had a hard time riding the jeepney and tricycle. I would pant. It was also hard to choose my clothes and most of all, I was always hot-tempered.

There were actually three times that I had a difficult time breathing. I thought I was going to die. I asked myself, “What would happen to my son?”. So, I went to my doctor and she advised me to lose weight.”

What worked for you to make the transformation possible?

“I tried diet pills, coffee and tea but they had no effect because I ate more calories than I burned. But, the real transformation began when a friend of mine invited me to join a 10-day fat loss program in a Nutrition Hub where I attended lectures about proper nutrition.

There was a wellness coach who guided and monitored me: my water intake and food that I ate. We did calorie counting for 10 days. They also gave me a personalized meal plan and program. I was taught the difference between fat loss and weight loss. The coach likewise stressed the importance of exercise.”

How long did it take for you to notice the difference?

“I religiously obeyed my coach and the program they gave. I lost 2 kilograms and 2 inches in my waistline during that 10-day program. So, I continued and attended seminars until I became one of the wellness coaches and opened my own Nutrition Hub here in Davao.”


Describe your new lifestyle.

“I do planking 2 mins. daily; Zumba 2-3 times a week; and do lots of walking.

As of now, I’m 61 kg. (my ideal weight is 51 kg.) I still enjoy my favorite foods. I still eat at buffet restaurants, in moderation, as long as it does not exceed my daily calorie needs which is 1200/daily.”

How do you feel now?

“I feel healthy and fit. I can eat properly. I can wear whatever I like and whatever is in vogue. And, thank God, at 41, I have no health issues.”

What is your advice for other parents who want to be fit and fab this 2017?

“If one of your new year’s resolutions this 2017 is to lose weight...start now, not tomorrow, but NOW! And, remember, the key to being successful in this fitness journey is that it must be 80% proper nutrition, 20% exercise, and 100% mindset.”

 “Where little beans grow”

Moving to Davao from Chicago in 2015 was a smooth transition for Wen Jen Chang-Go, thanks to family, friends and technology.

“I find Davao to be fun!  The pace is slower and people are much happier than Chicago.  I get excited for Kadayawan and look forward to the amazing fresh fruits that are available here.  It is interesting to see the city change and boom with all the new opportunities.  The aspect of heat has been a hard adjustment though.  During the winter in the U.S., I long for the warm sun to shine and chase away the bone-wrenching cold.  Now that I have experienced heat during brownouts, I just wish that Davao could be a bit cooler.  Just can’t have everything!”, giggles Wen.

Married to Davao-born businessman Jonathan Go, Wen finished her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois. After the birth of her daughter, she focused heavily on the importance of early education. She then took further studies and received a Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola University Maryland and a Montessori diploma from the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) in 2015.

Learning by doing

Last year, Wen opened Little Bean, a Montessori school along Sobrecarey St., Davao City.

“The Montessori method is an approach to education.  It stimulates children to learn by doing. Its classroom is a prepared environment with educational materials designed to capture the child’s interest. The child's innate passion for learning is encouraged by giving them opportunities to engage in spontaneous, purposeful activities with the guidance of a trained teacher. Through their work, children develop concentration and joyful self-discipline”, explains Wen.
Little Bean’s Montessori classroom is a mixed age classroom with children ranging from 2.5 – 6 years old.  It currently offers morning classes from 8:30-11:30 am.

“The average Montessori class is around 25-30 students.  However, Little Bean is a small and intimate school so the class size is around 10-15 students a year”, shares the mother of one.

Little Bean is now accepting students for the next school-year as well as summer classes in July 2017.  It also offers one-on-one tutorial for pre-school and grade school students as well as Chinese classes for ages 3-6.

Beauty of Montessori

There are three basic components to a classroom: the teacher, the students, and the curriculum.  The Montessori curriculum is effective because it focuses on concrete learning activities that are truly designed to meet the physiological and neurological needs at each stage of development.

According to Teacher Wen, the beauty of the Montessori curriculum is that it is customized for each child.  It follows the interest of the child and work through different areas.
Through Practical Life activities, children acquire many daily living skills: caring for themselves and their environment.  These activities improve their powers of concentration and fine motor development. On the other hand, interactionwith sensorial activities enable the children to experience the world through their senses, in a manner that establishes the physical and mental foundation for further learning.  



Meanwhile, through avariety of language activities and materials, children integrate sounds and the associated symbols and begin the processes of reading and writing. In addition, children begin to explore mathematical relationships by manipulating concrete materials that are designed to isolate a concept and prepare them for abstract reasoning.  The goal of the program is for each child to develop a love of numbers, problem-solving strategies, and computational skills.

Furthermore, considerable emphasis is placed on Creative Arts, Music, Science, Geography, and Cultural Studies.
Time to shine
By being a teacher, Teacher Wen says that she feels privileged to be a part of each child’s life, and to have the opportunity to guide the child to utilize his/her own powers.  She intimates that the most fulfillment she gets from teaching are the split-second moments.   When she observes her students, and sees that they figured out how something works, they change. “There is this brilliant facial change full of excitement and joy.  I will never get enough of these precious moments. Education is fun!”, enthuses Wen.


“There are a couple of reasons why I love the name Little Bean.  I am from Chicago and the iconic Cloud Gate in Millennium Park is often referred to as “The Bean.”  I am a little bean who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and my fondest memories remain in my hometown.  I also love the name because when you look at a bean it is just an ordinary bean among all the other beans, but when you give the bean the best environment to thrive, the bean becomes a strong and beautiful plant that is able to impart love, wisdom and peace to future generations”, reflects Wen.

“As a farmer plants a bean, we wait, wait and wait for the bean to grow.  Let’s not rush and stress about education and rankings.  Each plant has its own time to shine and blossom”, reminds Wen.

“From Beko’s Kitchen to yours

Beko’s Biik trailblazed Davao’s dial-a-lechon craze when it began airing its catchy radio ads in 2006. It promoted the “hotline” “227-BIIK” to get your hands on their succulent young pig roast, complete with the much-craved lechon crispy skin and its tender and tasty meat in just three hours time.


A decade later, the demand for Beko’s Biik is still as strong as ever.  This inspired its young owner Beverly Lim to expand the business further.
“I wanted a one-stop takeout counter where our customers can get their lechon and food trays, and do a little foodie grocery shopping as well. Thus, Beko’s Kitchen was born”, shares Beverly.



I love to eat as I come from a family of eaters.  So, I think it’s just natural that I ended up working in the kitchen. My mom used to cook a feast every Sunday. She loved it when we invited our friends for lunch to share a meal with the family. When she passed away, I began cooking the dishes she used to cook. In a way, it helped me deal with missing her”, divulges Beverly.

According to Beverly, the word “beko” means youngest aunt in Chinese. “A family friend  who used to live with us, Raul Labajo, would often hear my niece and nephew call me Beko. After a while, he started calling me by that name, too.  Eventually, the nickname caught on that everybody began using it”, chuckles Beverly. 

When I think of home

Beverly describes the food at Beko’s Kitchen as “homemade and not pretentious. It’s just comfort food that reminds you of home”.

Their well-loved family-approved specialties good for 10-15 persons is perfect for potlucks and gatherings. These include their scrumptious Baked Iberian Chicken (two whole chickens oven roasted for 2 hours with tons of garlic and potatoes at PhP900);  

Kinilaw na Tuna (marinated in Beko’s Kitchen’s house-blended kinilaw sauce at PhP700 and PhP800 (Sinuglaw) per tray);




Yang Chow Fried Rice (fluffy white rice with Chinese chorizo and homemade ham at PhP500); and Spicy Honey Chicken (two whole chickens cut into bite-sized pieces fried to perfection and glazed with chili sauce and honey mix at PhP800).

“Our Silky Sotanghon (PhP850 per tray) is a recipe passed on to us by our late grandmother. We only use imported sotanghon noodles from Malaysia. Slow-cooked stewed pork, shredded chicken and seafood all in one dish”, describes Beverly.
“In Chinese, noodles are supposed to symbolize long life. So imagine the horror on my mom’s face when I used to cut the noodles in half before cooking it. After that, whenever I cook my grandma’s Silky Sotanghon recipe which was taught to me by my mom, I see to it that the noodles are left uncut. And it does represent long life to me, for as long as their recipes are alive, it feels like they are as well”, enthuses Beverly.

Aside from the sotanghon, Beko’s Kitchen has its bestselling Birthday Noodle or Cha Misua (PhP850 per tray), a light-but-festive Chinese food symbolizing long life and traditionally eaten on one’s birthday.

Of course, Beko’s Kitchen will not be complete without its Beko’s Biik mainstays, Lechon Biik and Lechon Roll.



Beko’s Lechon Biik starts at PhP1,700 for six persons; PhP1,900 for eight pax; PhP2,200 for twelve pax; PhP2,800 for 15 pax; PhP3,500 for 20 pax; and PhP4,500 for 30 pax. It comes in regular and spicy flavors.

“I only sell products which I have personally tried and loved. I try to stay as local as possible choosing homegrown products”, says Beverly.









Beverly reflects that being in the business for 10 years, has taught her that there will be good and bad days.

“The most important thing to remember is that at the end of the day, customers are willing to forget bad experiences as long as you deal with the situation properly. It's not solely good food that earns you loyalty but also good customer service. As long as you handle the situation and address the problem, bad days can turn into better days”, encourages everybody’s “Beko”.

"Best of Davao 2017: Chocolates category"

NOTHING is more synonymous to February than chocolates, especially since Valentine’s Day falls into this month.

We know that a lot of folks out there are already looking for sweet chocolates that would exactly match their sweet love for their special someone. Sweet, isn’t it?

Because of that, we are doing our own legwork to help you all find the “right” sweetness in your journey to winning the right person. 

Now, in our quest to find the best chocolates that are proudly made by Dabawenyos, we have listened to the grapevine to figure out what has been making a buzz in the market lately.

And so, we had picked three locally-made chocolates in Davao City, namely the Kai Artisan, the Cacao de Davao and Coco Dolce, and invited three jurors to help us decide which is the best among the best.

Of course, since we are presenting only the best in the market, jurors had a hard time picking a winner, but like any other game, there has to be that one who has to be on top.

For the review, we let the jurors decide for us. But before we go on, let’s step on the brake first as there are some few facts you should know on how the judging was done: The jurors were not informed about the brand of the chocolates when they tasted them to prevent any prior biases from surfacing even before the tasting was done.

For each chocolate, we asked the jurors some questions that are crafted out from our research in determining the qualities of a good chocolate.
They were then asked how they would rate each chocolate from the scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the highest). To know the result, read more (winks).

KAI ARTISAN

Their box of eight chocolates just made a lot of impression to the jurors who were all in sync in saying that it had a good presentation. From its packaging, to the appearance of the chocolate and down to the last bite, this chocolate never ceased to amaze the jurors.

“From the way it is presented, it looked like it came from a gourmet chocolate shop. The exterior part of the chocolate is quite firm but then when you bite into it, it’s actually soft inside,” Juror Wowie said, referring to Kai Artisan chocolates she had tasted.

Juror Tessie agreed with it and describe the chocolates as firm on the outside but “silky, smooth and chewy” on the inside. The jurors said the sweetness was just right.

For being a local chocolate, Juror Chito said it tasted really good. “Pagsimhot pa lang nako daan, murag gusto na nako siya kan-on. Kung sama saba, as a consumer. Kani gyud akong gusto tilawan (Its smell alone will entice you to eat it. As a consumer, this is what I would really love to taste),” Chito added.

The jurors said they liked the way the chocolate was presented as it looked very high end. “I like the way it was presented because you’d feel excited that there’s two layers, the crunchy part and the soft part inside,” Juror Wowie said.

CACAO DE DAVAO


This chocolate is proudly made in Davao that it even bears the name of our beloved city. Those tiny pieces of dark chocolate with Durian fillings even accented more the fact that it is produced in the home city of the current president of the country.

Juror Tessie said that chocolate and the Durian filling just went well together. There might be some people who do not like to eat Durian but since its Durian filling is not too strong, those who do not like to eat Durian can actually eat it, she said. “I think it’s more of a dark chocolate. It’s a little bitter but still sweet,” said Juror Wowie, adding that it is more of like the native chocolate that Dabawenyos are used to.

Juror Chito said its presentation can compete in the international level and that it has a “pang export ug dating” look.

COCO DOLCE


This chocolate got Juror Wowie really excited as it is the only chocolate bar among the three items that can be tested for snapping.

According to research, one of the qualities of a good chocolate is when it snaps properly when you break it. Voila! It really did snap when Juror Wowie broke it into two pieces. No bits and pieces came out after it was broken. “This one taste more like our native chocolate and it’s a bit bitter so I guess it is dark chocolate,” Wowie expressed. “Although… you would be deceived by the appearance because it would appear as if it’s milk chocolate but actually it’s more of a dark chocolate,” added Wowie, saying further that compared to the other two chocolates, this one has a faint chocolate smell.

Juror Tessie agreed on this too and expressed that for one to really be able to smell this chocolate, one should really have to smell it for a few more seconds. It is also the least sweet among the three. Juror Chito said though he is not fond of dark chocolates, he can eat this one.

Based on the figures dropped by the Jurors, we have come up with a winner and it is pretty obvious, right? From the presentation, to the appearance, color, texture, smell, and of course, the taste of the chocolate, Kai Artisan aced this review. My dog-crazy youngest daughter’s dream came true one day when my sister-in-law gifted her with a brown-colored dachshund. Needless to say, she was over the moon. Our cuddly pup was unanimously christened Soju by our KDrama-loving family.

I must admit, one of the reasons why it took me a while to say ‘yes’ to my daughter having her very own pet was the huge responsibility that came with it.  At one point, Soju had a bite-anything habit, fearlessly destroying slippers, garden hoses, our car’s mudguard, floor mats, termite control traps, etc. Boy, these were the moments that my patience was seriously tested! But, all these seemed to pass every time I witnessed the pure joy of my daughter playing with her dear Soju.
What makes having a family pet worthwhile?... Just read on!

Jet-setting canine


Businesswoman Sharlene had her first golden retriever, Nashville, in high school. Morgan, another golden retriever, came into her life six years ago.
           
“I got Morgan in the U.S. from a golden retriever breeder and trainer named Alan Gunther. Alan also has a non-profit service dog organization, Service Companion Dogs of America (SCDOA), that provides service animals to people in need”, shares Sharlene.
Morgan finished his training and became a certified service dog at 10 months old. He was brought home to the Philippines when he was almost a year old.  And, since then, has been pretty much around the Philippines, and abroad.
“He comes to work with me every day, flies inside the airplane cabin with me at all times (When you see a golden retriever in a red vest at the airport or on a plane, come and say hi!) and loves the beach”, reveals Sharlene.


Sharlene discloses that Morgan visits his trainer every year in San Diego; watches a lot of NFL games; shows and musicals; and absolutely loves the long drives especially in extreme winter weather.

The proud ‘mom’ claims that Morgan is a dog of firsts. “He is the first dog to be allowed inside St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican for Mass with the Pope; first dog allowed inside many ancient Churches in Europe; and first dog to fly around the world in 3 days”.


“Morgan has done a lot in his life, and he's been the perfect home, work, and travel companion for me and the family”, smiles Sharlene.

Man’s best friend

Alyssa and Yeti have been dog lovers since they were young.

My parents told me that I’ve loved animals even as a baby. Dogs have a special place in my heart.  Usually, a toddler would ask for toys during their birthdays but as for me, all I wanted was a dog”, confesses Alyssa.

On the other hand, Yeti’s family always had dogs at home while he was growing up. In 1998, he got a bearded collie from Australia named Rebel, followed by another dog with the same breed, Bounce.
“They had a pup named Bonzi. Then, we got another bearded collie girl named Clover, who had pups Bruno and Sparkle”, says Yeti.
“Beardies are so active. They have tendencies to herd people. Rebel stayed with my Mom so she lived indoors and accompanied her to the office. The rest lived with me, outside the house but free to roam around the compound. They love to go out when the gate is opened, just to annoy the neighbor's dogs”, Yeti narrates.
In contrast, Alyssa did not just stick with one breed. Through the years, she owned a Shi Tzu, Dalmatian, golden retriever, poodle, mini pinscher, Lhasa apso, and a Yorkie spitz. She is currently a doting ‘mom’ to two schnauzers, Cooper and BaoBao.
I personally bathe them twice a week and groom their hair almost every day. Their after-shower grooming usually takes 1-2 hours. I go to a human salon once or twice a year. But, for my dogs, every 40 days!”, laughs Alyssa.
“Dogs are such a great example of unconditional love. They are always ready to love you, even if you have limited attention for them”, intimates Yet.

Bubbly Alyssa couldn’t agree more, “The first one to greet me when I come home every day are my excited dogs. I feel so loved. Their loyalty is unmatched!”.

Feline frenzy

Kirsteen and Micole has cared for dogs. However, having cats in the house is a novel experience for them.
“My three cats are named Oreo, Mochi and Yoshi. All of them are Persian cats. We gave Oreo her name because her fur color (white) reminded us of the cream filling in Oreo cookies; and Mochi, because her appearance highly resembles Mochi, the cat from the movie Big Hero 6. Yoshi, though far from his fur color (chocolate brown), is inspired by my son's favorite character in the Mario series, Yoshi”, divulges Kirsteen.
Micole’s family has 5 dogs, and 2 cats named MiuMiu and Ivo. “We got MiuMiu for free while Ivo was bought at a pet shop. I gave MiuMiu her name because she ‘meows’ a lot. On the other hand, Ivo got his name because my mom’s name is Ivy”, explains the charming Micole.
“Our cats sleep with us in the room. Mochi stays in between our pillow; Oreo sleeps beside me while Yoshi’s spot is under the bed. At 9:30pm, they will automatically go to pee and poop inside their litter box because they know it’s sleeping time already”, relates Kirsteen.


For somebody in Grade 9, Micole reflects that caring for pets is a good training ground. “I learned to be responsible because of my pets. They are a source of happiness and entertainment, and keep me company as well”, ends Micole.

         Some of us search for our life’s purpose and never get to discover it. But, there are others who find their calling early on and dare to live it.

       Twenty-five year old Maizy Colleen Alvarez Tan is one such inspiring dreamer whose ultimate passion is fashion.


        “I remember I enjoyed dressing up my Barbie dolls in crepe paper and masking tape when I was a child”, Maizy relates. Crafting ceaselessly captivated the imaginative lass. As she grew older, she moved on to sewing and pattern-making as her pastimes.

      Seeing how these worthwhile hobbies brought so much joy to their daughter, Maizy’s parents gifted her with a brand new portable sewing machine which she immediately put into good use by designing and creating her high school prom dress and even her debut gown, drawing praises from impressed loved ones.

          After becoming a registered nurse, Maizy’s parents gave her their blessing to enroll at the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts to pursue her first love. She eventually established her first successful atelier before working in Dubai.


Dubai couture scene

Maizy has perpetually been fascinated with the famed “City of Gold”. Many people in the industry talked about the couture scene in Dubai with such awe that it intrigued the youthful designer.

Fortunately, Jacy Kay Design Couture, a high-end fashion house based in Dubai, chanced upon her popular Instagram design posts one day (Maizy has over 12,000 followers on Instagram) and an offer for her to work in Dubai followed immediately. “Of course, I said “yes” right away!”, recalls the adventurous Maizy. 

“Dubai is a haven for thrill-seekers and young creatives. I made wonderful friends and met so many people. When I was at work, it felt like I was in fashion school all over again. I will never forget the moment when my boss took me to Morocco to do a shoot for our Instagram page. It's like I got paid to learn and enjoy at the same time!”, she reminisces fondly.

“My boss sends me to assist brides on their wedding day so I watch them have their photo shoot at helipads of the Burj Al Arab or at the Seaside of the Emirates Palace. The brides have a whole production of videographers and lady photographers. 

One time, this bride had a 10-meter long train that practically covered the hotel's whole staircase! I constantly had a little belt bag with needles and sequins just in case of clothing malfunctions or rips on the dress. I sit through the whole affair and our clients tipped me generously. It was tremendously fun! I felt like I was on a fashion field trip”, adds Maizy. 


The Dubai stint significantly honed Maizy’s design techniques, “Being the only woman designer meant that I had tons of constructive criticism from gay designers telling me not to be restricted; to make my designs more "flirty"; and my beadwork patterns more "grand". Working with the best among the fashion industry in Dubai definitely helped me in my creative growth”, admits Maizy.

  After two years of buying fabric, designing and manning the workshop, Maizy, who would feel homesick every now and then, felt that it was about time to go home. Her dream to revive her shop in Davao was next in her agenda.


Prom hits

            Having her own shop the second time around enabled the talented Dabawenya to apply the techniques she learned abroad. “I really cherish the creative process. I create the patterns myself then pass them on to the tailor who helps me actualize the pieces”, divulges Maizy.


Maizy’s design inspirations include Marchesca whose frills and florals are so “perfectly placed”. “I am also a fan of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's creative process, how they take inspiration from their roots and incorporate everything into their pieces. Couture-wise, I look up to so many designers, but my most favorite is Christian Lacroix because I love couture techniques like beadworks, laser-cutting and hand-painting. His work is breathtaking!”, gushes Maizy.


Opening her atelier in time for the prom season turned out to be an unexpected blessing. Her stunning creations didn’t go unnoticed as her glammed up clients were proclaimed “Prom Queen, Best Dressed, Head Turner, and Miss Debonair” in their respective high school proms. 




The lovely chinita shares that the current prom trend in Davao is off-shoulder. “Schools here are so restrictive of what the students should wear at the prom, so I feel that's why everyone is opting for off-shoulder pieces instead of the usual sleeveless style”, observes Maizy.



            However, beyond trends, Maizy explains that “custom-made pieces are a combination of the designer’s aesthetic and the client's input. Thus, I always ensure that each piece is a reflection of my client's personality. I think that alone will set her apart from the crowd”.

For those who want to pursue a career in fashion, Maizy has this priceless advice: “Keep on keeping on! It's hard work but if it's your passion, it doesn't feel like work at all!”.

 “Home-cooked love at Sundays”

While most young girls’ idea of playtime was creating imaginary dishes with their toy pots and pans, a once little chef was already cooking up a storm.

“At the age of 5, the kitchen was my playground. I adored hanging out with both my grandmothers who introduced to me the love for cooking”, reminisces Dorelane “Len” Uy-Bosquit, an Ateneo de Davao University Accountancy graduate who also completed a culinary certificate course at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.


“As a child, I would watch my Grandma Sien cook her specialty, pork brain with egg, straight from her wood-fired oven where my task was to blow the fire. On the other hand, my Grandma A-eng would make her lip-smacking siopao, pilipit, sotanghon and our favorite humba with egg”, says Len, now a doting mom of three.

Her early exposure to good food inspired her to open and manage one of Davao’s well-loved and established family restaurants, Dencio’s Kamayan. “Running a restaurant requires passion, patience, discipline, and hard work. Skill can be taught but foremost, being committed to do my chosen craft well is something I aim for. I cannot run the show by myself that's why I value teamwork with my staff”, divulges Len.


With Dencio’s seven branches under her belt, the passionate entrepreneur recently opened Sundays Modern Home Cooking, another must-try family-friendly restaurant in the city.



Sharing the love

Len explains that she chose Sundays as her restaurant’s name because it is always on this designated day that the family gathers together to partake of the home-cooked meals by their father, Domingo, whose name incidentally means “Sunday” in Cebuano/Spanish as well.

“Every Sunday, my father would go to the market very early to buy fresh meat and seafood. He would then decide what to prepare for lunch based on what's in the market. My task was to wake up early and help him implement his ideas. I would also do my own experimental recipes”, shares Len who is happily married to businessman John Joseph Bosquit.


At Sundays MHC, diners get a peek and taste of the Uys’ family favorites which Len describes as “simple cooking made with love”. “It actually took me a long time to trim down the choices in the menu because I wanted to put everything here!”, discloses the yoga and Ikebana enthusiast. Eventually, with her family as her best critic, the menu was given a thorough review and earned their much-deserved thumbs up.


Sundays’ homey ambiance is the perfect place to relax and while away your time whether it’s breakfast, lunch, snack time or dinner. “We wanted our guests to feel like they are at home, being pampered and relaxed. I have a display of old books from my in-laws' collection---from Mills and Boons pocketbooks to science books, management, gardening and inspirational books.  In addition, my kids and nieces' crafting works are displayed”, details Len.  





Everyday Sundays

Sundays serves a variety of international dishes from soup, salads, pasta, pizza, main dishes and desserts. Their bestsellers include the too-pretty-to-eat Sundays Salad (layers of crispy spring roll wraps with garden salad, grilled chicken, grapes, orange, avocado and rosemary balsamic vinaigrette); Oxtail Stew (a satisfying dish simmered for hours in rich tomato sauce and flavorful spices); Seafood Curry (fresh seafood in aromatic curry sauce); and Bacon Liempo (sinful thin slices of pork belly fried to a crisp).

Len narrates that the Pork Humba in Hotpot, their house specialty, is always present in every family gathering. “My Grandma A-eng would always make a big batch of it and prepare extras for take-out after the party.  I know that it's special because Amah would devote herself in the kitchen, simmering the humba in sweet and salty sauce for hours in low fire, and stirring it slowly so that the pork would be intact. As a child, while waiting for the humba to cook, I would fondly listen to her childhood stories on how she married early at 16 and raised eight kids during World War II. I admire my grandma’s patience, strength, and wit. She is my inspiration!”, intimates Len.

The sneaky mommy chef also whipped up a healthy appetizer called Malunggay Dip that even picky kiddie eaters would absolutely love. For dessert, be sure not to miss Sundays’ Suman Langka Rolls with Tablea Dip, her dad Domingo’s personal recipe.

            As I was thinking of what token of appreciation to give a doctor-friend, I considered several options: an intimate dinner with his lovely wife at a posh restaurant; a branded shirt; or perhaps, an overnight hotel stay with his family.

            Knowing my friend to be a dedicated husband and dad, I finally zeroed in on choice number three. I swiftly got in touch with the delightful Patty Basa-Tan, the Marketing and Communications Manager of Park Inn by Radisson Davao, to inquire about their summer promos.

            Unbeknownst to me, welcome news awaited my very own family and I as Patty relayed that we were being invited to a complimentary stay at Park Inn Davao to personally experience their summer package.  Fond memories immediately flooded us as we reminisced the time we had a similar staycation in this beloved hotel two years ago.

            Entering our hotel room, my husband Gary and I were in for a romantic surprise as a beautifully decorated cake greeted us to commemorate our wedding anniversary.




We comically staged an impromptu photo shoot, reliving the moment when we lovingly fed cake to each other at our wedding many years ago. This made our daughters cringe and laugh while they unwillingly served as our “photographers”.





        After several hilarious and cheesy poses, we comfortably propped ourselves at our king-sized memory foam bed to watch our favorite KDrama series via Park Inn’s high speed internet connection. Yes, we are so in it, too! It’s going to be one amazing staycation, guaranteed!

            Thanks to the accessibility of SM Lanang Premier, we were back again at the mall to say a quick hello to my twin nieces who were happily celebrating their post-birthday lunch with friends.

          Back at the hotel, we indulged in a power nap and watched some more K-Drama before bidding adieu to our short but sweet anniversary staycation.

“Just one more episode”, I tell myself. Then, that one becomes two, then three….

If you asked me years ago if I would spend my precious free time watching Korean dramas (K-Dramas), I would probably say no. But, now, I take it back!

Ever since my last trip to Korea in 2015, I have been hooked and it seems irreversibly good. Suddenly, long appointments with clinics and waiting for the kids’ school dismissal do not feel like forever as long as I have my series with me. 

Unlike our Pinoy telenovelas which could go on for years if the ratings are high, K-Dramas only last for 16 to 20 episodes. Thus, each episode is fascinating and straight-to the-point. The endearing lead actors and actresses make you swoon like a high schooler; the wide array of food appears addictingly appetizing; and the catchy soundtrack stays in your memory even with zero comprehension.

During our recent family trip to the Land of the Morning Calm, we just had to squeeze in the K-Drama experience in our already jampacked itinerary.




Soju tent

Celebrating my post-birthday dinner at a soju (a Korean liquor usually distilled from rice or sweet potato) tent in Myeongdong was such a surreal experience. 








We savored our soju with udon, green onion pancake, stir-fried squid and rolled omelette, amidst the sociable banter of Seoul office workers relaxing after work. 


























Afterwards, my hubby had no choice but to give in to the birthday girl’s piggy back request, a must-do for K-Drama husbands/boyfriends if their female partners had a drink too many. I was completely sober though and just wanted to tease the hubby for photo ops.

Garden of the Morning Calm

            After visiting the enchanting Petite France and Nami Island (which I have featured previously in my 2015 article, “Seoulful Summer”), followed by the picturesque Gapyeong Rail Park ride, our final stop at the breathtaking Garden of the Morning Calm in time for sunset was truly magical.

            “Love in the Moonlight” and “She Was Pretty” were just some of the hit K-Dramas filmed here. Who wouldn’t fall in love with this oldest private garden in Korea? With twenty different themed sections brimming with captivating flowers, assortment of trees and precisely manicured grass, no wonder this garden ranks among the favorite choices when shooting romantic dating or picnic scenes for K-Dramas.








Goblin’s bridge

            “Goblin”, the second highest rated drama in Korean cable television history, stars Gong Yoo of “Train to Busan” fame. The overhead bridge at Yongdap Station was one of the most often used places in the series. It was where Grim Reaper first met Sunny (not Sun Hee!) and the mysterious deity encountered chaebol heir Deok-Hwa.



            The Yongdap Station is among the farthest and last stops of Korail’s subway line. So, when we arrived there, it was quite isolated. This gave us a fabulous opportunity to do an hour-long photo shoot with the family, without photobombers lurking in the background.




                            Earlier, we passed by Duksung Women’s University where the façade of Goblin’s mansion was filmed. However, the guard showed us an English sign that stated they were no longer accepting visitors at the campus. Due to the immense popularity of “Goblin”, the campus had a heavy influx of visitors disturbing the privacy not only of the graduate school students but the pupils of the Un Hyun Kindergarten and Elementary School as well.

Bok Chicken

            “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” filmed a lot of memorable scenes at Bok Chicken, the fabled restaurant run by Bok Joo’s dad Kim Chang-gul and his aspiring actor-uncle Kim Dae-ho.


            The real restaurant is named Jageun Maeul, just a walking distance from Kookmin University (not the filming location of WFKBJ though). 










           Sadly, the real resto does not serve fried chicken but nevertheless, the affordable student meal was surprisingly one of the tastiest we had during the trip. Because the owner did not understand English, I approached a friendly university student for his recommendation. We enjoyed the Spicy Kimchi Pork Belly Fried Rice and adored the generous side dishes. Swaaag!



‘Legend of the Blue Sea’ house

            It turns out that Heo Joon-jae’s (Lee Min-ho) house (exterior part) in “Legend of the Blue Sea” at Sogong-ro 4 gil street was very accessible from our Nine Tree Hotel in Myeongdong.


            Imagine leaning on the very same wooden door and stepping on the stairs where Lee Min-ho and Jun Ji-hyun filmed the top-rating show!




            It totally amazes me how the Korean drama production team would patiently search for filming locations to give fans the best viewing experience. I wondered how many times would they go over to a place to shoot the exterior scenes. Or, because the series was just so well-planned, they already efficiently scheduled all the shots required for the scenes. This made me so curious. Can anyone enlighten me? Certified K-Drama addict problems…Hahaha!
  
Dobong Walnut Bakery

            Our family just gushes over “Strong Woman Do Bong-soon”. We absolutely love the effortless chemistry of Herculean super girl Do Bong-soon and charming gaming developer CEO Ahn Min-hyuk.


            In the series, Do Bong-soon’s family owns the Dobong Walnut Bakery. 


            The actual shop is a cozy café named Plate B situated in a quiet neighborhood, much similar to the K-Drama’s Dobong-do. 





              As you step out of the café, the Namsan Seoul Tower could be seen from afar. Parked at the corner was a truck manned by an old lady selling a variety of mouthwatering side dishes for takeout.



            We were thrilled upon seeing the walnut pie (still whole!) and its iconic packaging at the counter. After a few poses, we ordered three slices of the pie and sipped our cold drinks that unforgettable lazy afternoon.





            My third and latest trip to Korea was, so far, my most relatable experience. Visiting the Namsan Seoul Tower, drinking hot choco at Dal.komm Café, indulging in street food, barbeque, chicken and beer, commuting via the subway and bus, and many more, became extra special ever since I became a full-fledged K-Drama ajumma!

Gone are the days when people learned only to appreciate pretty and dainty flowers such as roses, mums and carnations.

In recent years, cacti and succulents have grown a large following among plant enthusiasts. These spikey darlings have also become popular gifts for special occasions. 





During the recent Mother’s Day celebration, Trust Home Depot had a pop-up shop dubbed as “Say it with Succulents” held last May 8-14, 2017, in collaboration with Botanophilic Davao, an online shop that offers artfully arranged succulents and ornamental plants.







Ching Olmoquez, who wittingly calls herself as “Millenial Jardinera”, is the face behind Botanophilic Davao. What started out as a hobby to satisfy her green thumb pursuits has successfully turned into a full-fledged online business.


A hardware store is not exactly the first place you would consider when searching for potential Mother’s Day gifts but Stephanie Seng Ong, VP for Marketing for Trust Home Depot enthuses, "We don't only help build houses, we also want to make it a home so we are always in search of ideas that will help cultivate relationships”.






“Succulents are inexpensive, low-maintenance, enduring, colorful, come in different shapes and sizes, can survive in just about any condition or container, some have health benefits, and don't they look so pretty lined up on your shelf?", the fashionista mom adds.


Trust Home Depot and Botanophilic Davao invited mommy bloggers and social media personalities to participate in a “Make-your-Own Succulents” workshop where they were able to choose their own plants and planters and learn about caring for succulents. 










After the activity, the guests enjoyed delightful lemon tea and cookies from Marks and Spencer.

SUCKER FOR SUCCULENTS

Interested in taking care of succulents as a hobby? Mommy Leah Curioso-Carreon shares why she is a sucker for succulents in this short Q and A.

How did you start taking interest in succulents?

It started when my friend Melani Dahili who is also a Dabawenyo based now in Australia kept on posting photos of her beautiful succulents almost every day on social media. I was amazed on how she was able to propagate her succulents by the hundreds. Her love and passion for succulents inspired me, so I gave the hobby a try.

What do you love about cacti and succulents?

Oh, these plants give joy and positive vibes!

They are inexpensive and require low maintenance. Some varieties are even beneficial to health like aloe vera. I recently had my vacation for almost 10 days and when I came home, I found out that the succulents were indeed survivors!

Every plant is an art. They all come in different types, colors and sizes. And, I get fascinated with certain cacti producing their unique flowers. These plants are also #instagramworthy and #fbworthy. In addition, I love having tea and coffee time with them around.

Did you meet new friends through your hobby?

Together with other hobbyist friends, I became a member of a Cactus and Succulent group.
It was fun connecting with people sharing the same passion and interest about succulents and cacti and I thank God for the opportunity because we began to appreciate and love nature and praise Him for creating beauties like these.

Breathtaking Balesin

 “Breathtaking Balesin”

Situated off the eastern coast of Luzon lies Balesin Island Club, a 500-hectare tropical paradise with seven themed villages that makes you feel that you have vacationed in Europe and Asia in just one stay.



For two days, we got to experience this luxurious members-only resort as a treat when my first cousin Fred celebrated his 50th birthday there recently with family and close friends.



Just a 25-minute plane ride from Manila, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff with lovely leis and sweet mango juice upon our arrival. After a short briefing, we were whisked off to the clubhouse where we leisurely enjoyed our Filipino lunch while waiting for our check-in time.



            
My cousin booked our family at the Balesin Villa because of its accessibility to the clubhouse, beachfront and other facilities. And, it turned out to be a wonderful choice with its indigenous architecture and design. The spacious villa included an outdoor and indoor shower, jacuzzi, deck and other modern amenities guaranteed to make guests extra comfortable.












The afternoon was getting warmer, making the kids restless. No problemo! A visit to Mykonos Village cooled them off as they swam in the refreshing pool which had a shaded part if the sun gets too hot to handle and an open area with a breathtaking view of the white and blue Cycladic cubic architecture ala the famous houses of Mykonos and Santorini in Greece.
 




After an hour of swimming, we moved to St. Tropez to catch the enchanting sunset while taking in the French Riviera vibe. The colorful rooms with individual balconies facing the expansive pool and the Pacific Ocean were inspired by the iconic Hotel Byblos, a spellbinding backdrop for our family photos.








For dinner, my cousin Fred’s birthday fete was exclusively set up at the Balesin Sala. That night, we also celebrated my cousin Lyn’s natal day. These two people are very dear to me because I stayed with them during my college years in Manila and are almost like my siblings.


The hearty buffet spread consisted of Costa del Sol’s Spanish signature dishes such as Sopa de Ajo, Cochinillo, Paella Valenciana, Croquetas, Lengua Estofada, Bacalao ala Vizcaina, Albondigas en Salsa, and for dessert, Canonigo and Tocino del Cielo. While dining, an acoustic band serenaded us with timeless and contemporary songs.


The following morning, we joined a jeepney tour to take us to all of the island’s themed villages. Aside from Balesin (Philippines), Mykonos (Greece) and St. Tropez (France), we were captivated by Bali (Indonesia), Phuket (Thailand), Costa del Sol (Spain), and Toscana (Italy) where we relished our mouthwatering pizza and pasta for lunch.






   

No stone was left unturned by Balesin Island Club’s developer, Alphaland Corporation, as it ensured that each village appeared and felt authentic from the architecture, interior design and food served at the specialty restaurants and bars.



During the fascinating tour, we also explored the Balesin Royal Villa, Balesin Spa, Aegle Wellness Center, Rico’s Hideaway, Seafood Shack, among many others.

 
          



 

In the afternoon, another surprise treat awaited our group as we boarded M/Y Obsessions, a 130-foot super yacht, for our sunset cruise. The vessel’s elegant interiors were designed by Ann Van Der Kamp and Diaship, and the materials used were from the house of Gianni Versace, no less!












At the sun deck, we savored the tasty canapes while we sat back and marveled at the stunning ocean view. As the sun set, family and friends raised their wine glasses and gave a heartwarming toast to the well-loved birthday boy.
