 "Passing on the torch"
The 51st Most Outstanding High School Graduate of Davao City
                                                Sun.Star Davao, April 7, 2018

For 51 years, the search for Davao City's Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) has been the flagship program of JCI Davao, Inc. (formerly Davao Jaycees, Inc.).

With the objective “to inspire the youth to aim for more beneficial endeavors and encourage them to aspire for continuing excellence while instilling upon them that good deeds are often rewarded, MOHSG takes pride of its long list of alumni who continue to excel in their respective fields here and around the world”, shares this year’s MOHSG committee chairman Shandy Michael Sy.

Since its launch in 1965, Davao’s most prestigious schools have been sending their nominees to join the much-awaited search. It has become a familiar avenue for high school students and academe practitioners to showcase their abilities and talents.  In addition, it has helped the civic-oriented JCI Davao members to continuously hone their skills in leadership and project management.

NEW APPROACH

This year’s awe-inspiring MOHSG finalists not only strove for curricular and extracurricular excellence, but also applied their knowledge, skills, and talents to create positive change in their respective communities which is considered the hallmark of active citizenship.

“It directly involved the candidates in nation-building activities and immersed them in real world scenarios to better appreciate what they could contribute that has sustainable impact, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG)”, details Shandy.

“Another first for the 51st MOHSG Search was the two-day Youth Formation and Leadership Development Camp that allowed the finalists to acquire valuable personal and character development ideas on how they can put into action the learnings that they have encountered. These activities to the new approach sealed the program's strategy and were the cornerstone to the three focus areas of the program known as MOHSG A.C.E. which stands for Academic Excellence, Community Involvement, and Exemplary Leadership”, Shandy continues.

Although the program incorporated these first-time activities, Shandy says that it was still a competition among the best high school graduates from different schools in the city.

The 2018 MOHSG competition had five search components, namely Portfolio Writing; Panel Interview and Project Proposal Presentation; Project Completion/Implementation Report; Self-Introduction; and Impromptu Speech.

PICKING THE BEST OF THE BEST

Emerging as the grand winner of this year’s MOHSG's culmination day held at the Abreeza Activity Center recently was Jill Esther Velarde Parreño of Davao Christian High School. Her laudable Sidlak Stories project aimed to nurture a love of reading in children in two ways: by creating bilingual Cebuano/Tagalog children's storybooks and conducting storytelling and read-aloud workshops for parents of Barangay 12-B's daycare center. Aside from being the grand winner, Jill, a 2016 Palanca awardee, amazingly bagged the first place in four out of the five search components.

On the other hand, Eileene Lois Castro Rojo of Brokenshire College remarkably clinched the 1st runner-up spot with her Literacy and Values Formation project targeted to assist the distressed DUHA community in Ma-a cope with their current situation; restore the DUHA Day Care Center; instill values in children; and promote sustainable growth through learning.

The artistic Germaine Monterola Escobal of Holy Cross of Davao College was declared as the third runner-up. “Likha Para Sa Bata” caringly intended to provide school uniforms for the students of Luman Elementary school of New Valencia, Tugbok, Davao City.  It laboriously entailed fund raising activities which promoted the cultivation of the youth's talents and skills through arts and entrepreneurship.

And, finally, Megumi Faith Papaya Mallari, a cheerful student achiever of Philippine Nikkie Jin Kai International School, won as the fourth runner-up with her YES passion project primarily meant to teach the youth of Barangay Tigatto on how to properly act on the recurring floods in the area, and how to concretely help in mitigating this phenomenon.

PASSING ON THE TORCH

The other 2018 MOSHG finalists included the following:Cared Hillary Cañeda Abalo (Davao City National High School); Joseph Remirez Bahalla (Philippine Women's College Of Davao); Amanda Faye Matimatico Barbadillo (Colegio De San Ignacio); Dessa Lanchinebre Caballero (Our Lady Of Fatima Academy of Davao); Maverick Tyrone Barcela Cai (Davao Chong Hua High School); Kent Anthony Villasis Carido (Christian Colleges Of Southeast Asia); Mariah Shane Soria Ng (Immanuel School of Davao); Mark Joshua Caidlang Salmorin (Bernardo D. Carpio National High School); and Christian John Alivio Saludar (University of Immaculate Conception).

“As the newly adopted MOHSG symbol, the torch, signifies enlightenment and hope to the new generation, these MOHSG finalists were selected not only because of their academic achievements but also because of their leadership that they may be able to inspire others to aspire greater heights.  As we pass on the torch for them to carry, we also pass on to them the responsibility to develop more great leaders that will promote positive change and sustainable impact to the community”, enthuses Shandy.

“World-class Filipino artisanship comes alive with Plains and Prints”
Sun.Star Davao, April 21, 2018

Our intimate encounter with renowned international bag designer Amina Aranáz-Alunan was love at first click, literally.

My mommy friends and I politely asked her if we could take a ‘groufie’ to which she happily obliged. We huddled together, and I awkwardly extended my arms to press the camera button but que horror…the screen went blank! It turned out I pressed the power off button. Teehee!

We all burst into laughter and I explained sheepishly that I was still unfamiliar with my new phone’s selfie features. Fortunately, she was game enough to pose for another shot and even stayed with us later to chitchat about her three kids, breastfeeding, and post-partum weight loss.

Such is the charm of the stunning Amina who incredibly balances marriage, motherhood, managing a leading Filipino lifestyle brand and as if they were not enough, acting as the co-founder of the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA) while looking innately fresh and chic.

Summer sophistication

Amina recently visited Davao to grace the ARANÁZ for Plains and Prints preview held in the city’s only luxury shopping mecca---Chimes Boutiques.

Aranáz was founded back in 1999 by three stylish women, who included Becky Aranaz, the entrepreneurial mom of Amina. The fashion label became known as “integrating exotic prints and indigenous artisan crafts in glamorous and modern handbags”.

Through its almost two decades, the brand gained a loyal local and international following and counts some members of European royal families as their esteemed clients.

In a press statement, it details that theARANÁZ for Plains and Prints collection is a celebration of Filipino artistry and tradition. With a laid-back and effortlessly elegant resort vibe, the collection features eight stylish handbags and seven fashion pieces that combine the unique design elements of ARANÁZ with Plains and Prints’ signature silhouettes and fabric designs”.

“Plains and Prints took cues from the ARANÁZ aesthetic by translating the luxury label’s iconic flamingo, coconut, and pineapple prints into various pieces that radiate summer sophistication. On the other hand, the bags bear ARANÁZ’s intricate weaves, exquisitely handcrafted using locally sourced materials”, the press statement adds.

Local artisanship

Plains and Prints Vice-President Roxanne Farillas says that the creative process for the collaboration was a “delight from start to finish, especially since she shares the Aranáz trio’s passion for local artisanship”.

Like ARANÁZ, we believe in the idea of local brands supporting other local brands,” Roxanne narrates. “This collaboration isn’t just a new fashion collection. It’s also a movement to showcase the work of creative visionaries and empower talented craftspeople in the Philippines.”

TheARANÁZ for Plains and Prints collection is the first time that ARANÁZ has collaborated with a local retail fashion brand.

We’re always driven by our passion for endless creativity, imagination, and support for Filipino designers. This collaboration allows us to spread to more women our modern appreciation for local artisanship,” intimates Amina who is ARANÁZ’s creative director.

Luxury shopping

At the ARANÁZ for Plains and Prints preview event, Davao’s sophisticated set was treated to an exciting fashion show highlighting the impressive collaboration of the two proudly Filipino brands.

Afterwards, guests had the chance to hobnob and learn some first-hand styling tips from Amina herself as she shared her fashion insights and even personally styled a few fashionista clients.

While shopping, guests also indulged in the scrumptious savory and sweet grazing spread of the fabulous Shane Lim’s My Home Kitchen. Splendidly transforming Chimes into a summer wonderland with lush tropical foliage and vivid hues was Davao’s premier event organizer Annie Paz-Lim.

"One of the best things about this event is that we got to showcase first in Davao and feature the store's curated selection of unique and exceptionally beautiful pieces in fashion, healthy living, and home that everyone would want to buy and have", quips Ia Alano-Vergel de Dios, Chimes Business Unit Head.

The lady behind Chimes Boutiques, vice president Cindy Louise Yap was undeniably thrilled on how the latest collection was warmly received by the public. “We successfully staged a quality event with exceptional products, after all, it’s about quality shopping”, smiles Cindy.

The Chimes Flagship Store is located along Gov. Sales St., Davao City while their newly-renovated Chimes Boutiques is on the 2nd floor of the Abreeza Mall of Davao. Follow Chimes at Facebook: chimesboutiques and Instagram: @chimesboutiques.

“My Home Kitchen by Shane Lim”
Sun.Star Davao, May 7, 2018

Growing up with a mom who loved to prepare feasts every chance she got, it was no surprise that the culinary bug bit Shane Maglente-Lim.

“I would always insist on preparing the sweets, desserts, and the cherry on top of the cake. With my husband’s cooking skills, support and encouragement, I learned to whip up dishes from scratch”, says the amiable Shane who is happily married to businessman Michael Ryan Lim.

Eventually, the 34-year old Shane enrolled in a culinary program to enhance her cooking and baking skills and attended a master’s class in Bangkok with Chef Antonio Bachour.

Although she was busy helping with the family business selling tires, car batteries and auto supplies since her college days, she felt that her passion for cooking and baking needed to find a creative outlet. Hence, she opened Miko’s Brew which currently has branches in Davao and Tagum City.

“Miko’s Brew was our first humble beginning and we eventually ventured into franchising as well”, she shares.

Heart of the home

These days, Shane is making a buzz in Davao with My Home Kitchen.

“I put up a small gathering for family and friends where I prepared everything: starters, main course and desserts. The guests loved what I prepared and clamored for my homemade roasted turkey and pastries. Then, simply by word of mouth, other people started ordering not only during the holidays but for other occasions as well. This gave me the inspiration to come up with My Home Kitchen”, intimates the lovely mom of four.

Nowadays, Shane is not only known for her decadent desserts, and savory dips, spreads, and pates, but for her stylish grazing table/cart which is always a hit in parties.

For the uninitiated, a grazing table/cart is that elegantly-styled smorgasbord of fine cheeses, cured meat, assorted nuts, dried fruits, crackers, toast, jams, spreads, dips, honey, olives, crostini, caprese, toast, seasonal garnishes and even chocolates and desserts.

This cannot-be-missed spread is always a welcome and lavish addition to any party and becomes the center of attention in most events.

“The cart either comes in gold or black and is good for 60 persons. I can also personalize the menu to suit the client’s taste”, explains Shane who was born and raised in Tagum City.

My Home Kitchen also offers their Signature Drink and Dessert Stations which include styling and decor with your choice of non-alcoholic or alcoholic drinks and preferred sweets.

In addition, it has recently introduced their Melt Station that serves to-die-for Cheese Raclette and Fondue.

Mother’s Day collection

This Mother’s Day, My Home Kitchen rolls out fabulous treats for the most important woman in our lives.

“We have the Surprise Cake (PhP 4,500), our pink velvet 8-inch tall cake with homemade strawberry jam and buttercream. It is filled with Mama and Mommy candies and sprinkles and topped off with an Ecuadorian rose and gypsophila, Belgian chocolate, macarons, strawberries, meringue kisses and 24-karat gold leaf”, Shane describes.

My Home Kitchen likewise has its Strawberry Luxe Box with two sizes (PhP 1,800, small-12 pcs. and PhP 4,500, big-30 pcs.). Luscious strawberries are dipped in the chocolate of your choice and garnished with a 24-karat gold leaf.

Meanwhile, the super trendy Mom’s Letter Stack Cake (PhP 2,800) is a personalized
Pistachio-based cake (you can use the first letter of your mom’s name). “It has premium chocolates, strawberries, fresh flowers and anything pretty we can put on top”, details Shane.

On the other hand, the Charcuterie/Grazing Box (PhP 3,800) is the perfect gift box not only for your mom but for the family as well. It is good for 3-5 persons and boasts of various premium ham and cheeses, imported nuts, dried fruits, crackers, fresh fruits, a bottle of spread/dip, olives, pickles and assorted chocolate.

“Most of our products need a lead time of two days. So, please order in advance and check out our website at https://myhomekitchen.com.ph/ or follow us on Instagram: myhomekitchen_dvo”, reminds Shane.

Shane excitedly reveals that My Home Kitchen now accepts payments through PayPal. It also delivers for a hassle-free Mother’s Day gift-giving experience.

“Dabawenyos are definitely foodies. It warms my heart that people request for my new products. For now, I just hope to keep at it and deliver them a taste of My Home Kitchen. Since this is just a hobby and I do it in my personal kitchen, I will take it one step at a time. However, soon, we will have a physical store”, concludes the phenomenal queen of her very own kitchen.

Hats off to Jillianne!
A Madeline-themed 8th birthday
Sun.Star Davao, May 19, 2018

"In an old house in Paris
That was covered in vines
Lived twelve little girls
In two straight lines
They left the house at half past nine
The smallest one was Madeline”

Whether reading the well-loved book or watching the hit TV series, this fascinating rhyme never fails to greet the loyal followers of the endearing Madeline.

Madeline is a popular series originally created by author and artist Ludwig Bemelmans in 1939. It is a whimsical tale of the 7-year old Madeline who attends boarding school in Paris along with eleven other girls under the tutelage of Miss Clavel.

In Davao, count the Abadilla siblings, Jamie Ailianne and Jillianne Christalle, as among the spunky Madeline’s avid fans.

TEAM ABADILLA. Christian and Aileen Abadilla with daughters Jamie Ailianne (in yellow) and Jillianne Christalle (in blue) who are huge fans of Madeline.

“Since my 10-year old Jamie has Turner Syndrome and is quite conscious of being petite, I wanted to show her how the smallest girl out of the twelve girls in two straight lines, Madeline, was the bravest and most caring of all. One episode led to a series of episodes that my daughters and I would watch every day. We also enjoyed learning bits of French and liked the songs that Madeline and her friends would sing and of course, loved their adorable uniforms”, shares Mommy Aileen “T-one” Brigole-Abadilla.

“That’s why when Jilly requested that her 8th birthday theme be Madeline, I did not hesitate to conceptualize, design and style her party”, smiles the crafty Singapore-based mom who is likewise a hobby-based event stylist with her “Pretty Little Party Davao”.

C'est magnifique!

Donning their Madeline-inspired hats and capes (a gracious gift from Mommy Aileen), the eager little guests were “welcomed” by the delightful standees of Madeline and Friends, Miss Clavel and even Genevieve, the dog.

The marvelous dessert table splendidly showcased the two-tier Madeline fondant cake by Jackie Martinez’s Crafty Cakes and Cupcakes. Madeline and Genevieve, the Eiffel Tower, old-fashioned French shop houses and of course, “the old house in Paris that was covered with vines” fittingly adorned the piece de resistance.

Adding a classy touch to the too-pretty-to-eat sweets spread were Madeline’s hats as cake pops and capes as sugar cookies; Jillianne-monogrammed cookies; and mini cakes with Madeline toppers creatively displayed on red, blue gingham and turquoise suitcases as dessert stands.

Pretty little party

Party host Jymmez Infiesto of Bonjee Entertainment expertly entertained the special guests with a thrilling “Pass the Madeline Dolls” game and even conducted an enlightening basic French session while Mommy T-one facilitated an exciting online game for adults called “Kahoot”, cleverly testing the guests’ knowledge with Jillianne-related trivia.

Jamie and Jilly’s energetic dance numbers, “Good Time” by Owl City and “Better When I’m Dancing” by Meghan Trainor, and the catchy song presentation by the musically-gifted Team Abadilla composed of Mommy T-one, Daddy Ian, Jamie and Jilly were well-applauded by all. In addition, Cyrus, the magician, mesmerized the audience with his spellbinding tricks and illusions.

For giveaways, boys were presented with house-shaped boxes while girls brought home dainty Madeline dolls. And, since it was Mother’s Day on the day of Jilly’s party, mommies were treated with their very own custom-made Madeline hat boxes, a thoughtful surprise from the Abadillas.

Before enjoying the sumptuous dinner, Jilly and her friends recited Madeline’s favorite prayer before meals: “We love our bread, we love our butter. But, most of all, we love each other!”

Truly, with the outpouring of love showered by family and friends, Jilly could not ask for anything more on her 8th birthday.

Hats off to Jilly!

Raising generation next

 “Raising generation next”
Sun.Star Davao, June 2, 2018

When you are born with the proverbial silver spoon and belong to the millennial generation with easy access to technology and information, how do you avoid feeling entitled?

For Eleanore Lee Teo, author of the new book "Raising Heirs: Of the Spoiled and Entitled Second Generation---And Why We're Still Your Only Hope", she credits her grandparents for setting a good example by being two of the most humble people she knows.

RAISING HEIRS: OF THE SPOILED AND ENTITLED SECOND GENERATION---AND WHY WE’RE STILL YOUR ONLY HOPE” is the first book of young author and mom Eleanore Lee Teo.  It attempts to answer the question, “How do you raise a selfless generation in a self-entitled world?”.
“They never felt that any task was beneath them or that anyone was in a lower position than them. As I grew older, I saw the great relationships they had formed with others and how well respected they were and I realized that was how I wanted to live my life as well”, she declares.

“Entitlement, by definition, is feeling that you deserve some kind of special treatment. I think I actually grew up feeling quite entitled until I was old enough to see that I had no right to be. I wish I had fixed myself earlier on, but I guess mistakes are necessary and they force us to grow up”, admits the only daughter and middle child of Edward Lee, the chairman and founder of COL Financial Group, Inc., the leading online stock brokerage firm in the Philippines.

DADDY’S GIRL. Eleanore is the only daughter and middle child of Edward Lee, the chairman and founder of COL Financial Group, Inc., the leading online stock brokerage firm in the Philippines.
Despite his dad’s mega success, Eleanore observed that he remained an extremely simple person in terms of his lifestyle. “So, there was nothing fancy or glamorous about how we were raised”. In fact, Mr. Lee always made it a point to spend time with his three children even with his packed schedule.

“I grew up sharing his love for the business because he never acted like family and work were mutually exclusive from one another. He was never ashamed to bring us along and patiently answered every single question we ever had when we were young, which was quite a feat given how busy he was”, intimates Eleanore.

Blessing and curse

Now, at thirty-three years old, the millennial (or Generation X, born between 1981-1994) mom feels that her generation is blessed to be able to have access to information and technology at their fingertips. “This has opened up so many possibilities including the option to now work from home, supplement our parenting methods, and travel more frequently”, the Ateneo de Manila University AB Communication graduate reveals.

However, Eleanore notices that the advancements in technology have both become a blessing and a curse because it breeds “impatience and lack of tolerance”.

THE MOTHER SHOW. Eleanore promotes her book on Magic 89.9’s “The Mother Show” with hosts Andi Manzano-Reyes, Riki Flores-Reyes and Delamar Arias
“We’ve been so used to instant gratification that we can’t stand to wait for anything nowadays. If we don’t get our answers or if we don’t get what we want now, we immediately consider the system faulty or defective and we use social media to magnify our complaints”, the former student disc jockey points out.

FQ MOM. Speaker, author and philstar.com contributor Rose Fres Fausto poses with Eleanore at the book launch
More so with Generation Z, or those born after 1994, who “thrive on acceleration and next, next, next”. But, wait, there’s a new “kid” in town. Enter, Generation Alpha or anyone born after 2010.

“Generation Alpha is supposedly the label for all children born in the 21st century and they have been characterized as the most technologically enhanced generation that is fully digital, mobile and used to instantaneous reactions. It is noted that the first babysitter of most Alphas will have been iPads”, relates the Kerygma contributing writer.

BRO. BO. With best-selling author, entrepreneur and Catholic lay preacher and minister Bo Sanchez during the “Raising Heirs” book launch at the Manila House Private Members Club
“Since I am still learning how to parent my six and three-year-old kids, I don't have the right to really give specific advice in terms of raising this new generation but do feel that proper communication with them is now more important than ever. They can become influenced by so many mediums now that we must make sure they are aware that if they ever have a question, they can always turn to their parents rather than their tablets”, underscores the young mom.

Leading by example

The main message of her debut book “Raising Heirs” is for parents “to take responsibility for our children”.

Eleanore details that the book speaks to three different audiences - the first deals with those who are still working their way to find their personal success. “I explain how it can sometimes become easy to neglect family in the process because we're so busy trying to build our businesses or our careers but nonetheless, as early as possible, we need to think about succession and how we can share the journey with our children”, explains the Marketing and Operations Managing Director of the Caylum Trading Institute.

“Eventually, it directs its message to the second generation as it talks about why we cannot constantly use our privileges to shortcut our way to success and why adversity is a necessity. The final part of the book then is a plea to parents to develop lasting, deep bonds with their children by giving the time, effort and understanding needed to strengthen them”, she describes.

Royce and Eleanore Teo with their adorable kids Eloise and Ramsey
“My husband Royce pretty much had to earn everything on his own the moment that he graduated from college. His parents raised all seven of their kids to become self-sufficient and independent because they weren't as well off as many of their other peers, but they were taught the value of hard work and the importance of family. Those are two of the major principles in life that I wanted our kids to grow up with and since I emphasize in the book the significance of leading by example, I knew that my kids would have their dad to serve as exactly that”, Eleanore beams with pride.

“My goal is to raise responsible, happy and morally upright individuals. They may not grow up to be part of the world's wealthiest but with the right attitude, habits, and values, I am confident that they'll get by well enough”, enthuses Eleanore.

Raising Heirs: Of The Spoiled and Entitled Second Generation---And Why We’re Still Your Only Hope” is available at National Bookstore and online at www.kerygmabooks.com for an SRP of P350.00.

Start 'em young to be money smart

“Start ‘em young to be money smart”
June 16, 2018, Sun.Star Davao

Gerald Dimailig is a diligent seafarer who comes home after four to six months from working abroad. Unlike his other peers who give expensive shoes and gadgets to their kids, he does not bring home 'pasalubong', save for a few chocolates. And, each time, his two boys, Patrick (17) and Jed Benedict (12), are happily content with these simple treats.

“My husband earns quite decently but we agreed early on that we should never spoil our kids with material things by substituting his presence with presents. We wanted to let the boys understand that their dad’s safe arrival is what matters most. Thankfully, our sons have gotten used to it, and this is probably the reason why they have a very good father and son relationship”, shares Doris Parel Dimailig, a full-time mom and businesswoman.

PRESENCE, NOT PRESENTS. Gerald and Doris Dimailig have agreed early on that they will never spoil their kids, Patrick (17) and Jed Benedict (12), with material things even if Gerald earns quite decently as a seafarer. Leaving the corporate world gave Doris the time to impart solid family values to her teenage boys.  It has likewise allowed her to mentor them on how to become money smart which is, sadly, the one thing that is hardly taught in school.
“I am just like any parent who wants to ensure that my boys become responsible in handling their money.   This thinking might be too advanced but they will become family bread winners someday and I want them to lead their families to prosperity anchored on right and solid foundation”, says the doting mom.

Doris clearly knows what she is talking about. A Land Bank employee for twenty years with parents who were government workers, she relates that growing up, she always felt abundant and provided even if she had ‘ordinary folks’ with humble means.

“Money never became a measure of our success with my mom emphasizing the importance of financial independence and the need to prepare for old age so I don’t become a burden to my children later on”, she discloses.

Money jar

Nowadays, Doris is active in spreading financial literacy and conducts one-on-one and group coaching on various topics such as saving, budgeting, getting out of debt, and investing in the Philippine stock market. She has also given personal finance talks to DepEd, Philippine Statistics Authority, Local Government of Sulop, and Cor Jesu College.

One of the ways she mentors her boys in financial stewardship is their family’s money jar. “Using the money jar system is my own way of helping Patrick and Jed allocate their school allowance, similar to the concept of budgeting”, she explains.

“Each of them has three clear jars labeled as Save/Invest, Charity, and Tithes. The percentage of the allocation is 10% for tithes, 5% for charity, and 25% for saving/investing. The 60% is left for spending. They can only spend what is left, not save what is left. The money in the jars are harvested at the end of the month”, she emphasizes.

The money from the tithes jar is given to the church.  It is Doris’ way of teaching her boys that they need to return at least 10% of God’s provision to the church or any religious organization that nourishes our faith.  It is also a way of thanking God for the blessings of abundance.  Meanwhile, the money from the charity jar is given to anyone who is in need because one of the main purposes of wealth is to bless others.

And, lastly, the money from the save/invest jar is placed in a bank to be transferred to their stock market account every month.  “Since their savings are small, I sometimes put a minimal add on to it”, Doris divulges.

Good stewards

This early, Doris has seen significant changes with her sons as they became more financially aware.

The eldest Patrick who used to be the “bilmoko” (‘buy me this’) type during his younger days has become more conscious and “kuripot” (tightwad) in managing his money, while the younger Jed is developing an entrepreneurial mindset by selling things in school. They have since learned to distinguish “wants” from “needs”.

The two siblings have also invested in pure stocks and mutual funds a few years back. Doris made sure that their 2015 new year’s resolution is to have the boys have their own individual investment account at ages 13 and 9. She used their Christmas gifts from grandparents and godparents as the initial fund for starting their investments.  After explaining to them how the stock market worked, she made them choose what stocks to buy to invest their money in. One of their stocks is Jollibee, which, coincidentally, is also the most popular choice among investing kids and teens.

The Dimailig boys’ inspiring money saving habits have not gone unnoticed. Last 2016, Jed received the Outstanding Kiddie Saver Award from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, a nationwide search for young Filipinos who have developed the good habit of saving money at an early age.

“Parents must remember that our children’s financial education begins with them.   If they do not take effort in teaching their kids how to handle money while they are young, no amount of income saved can be enough against financial disasters in the future; a sure ticket to troubled relationships and stressful lives”, Doris warns.

The conscientious mom advises that parents should consider the need to start the kids’ own savings accounts early on.  “Teach them to invest money in a business or paper assets.  If their forte is entrepreneurship, allow them to become young businessmen and experience selling simple products to relatives, friends, neighbors, or classmates”, she adds.
“Just don’t forget to ingrain in the children’s hearts the true purpose of money. We know that it is not the only thing that matters but, nevertheless, a very important tool to catch their dreams, buy their needs, and occasionally, their wants.  Money is an important requirement for reaching out and helping others, for charity and for glorifying God through tithing”, Doris reminds fellow parents.

How can we teach our kids to learn the value of money? Here are Doris Dimailig’s five best tips:

1.  PAY YOURSELF FIRST.   Whenever they receive their school allowance, kids should set aside 10% or more depending on how much they can afford. This will develop in them the habit of saving and introduce the formula of income – savings = expenses.

2.  TEACH THEM HOW TO BUDGET. Knowing how to budget is one important life skill that teaches children control over their money and how they spend it.  This is the reason why Doris believes in giving kids their school allowance and teaching them how to manage it.

3.  INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF EARNING MONEY. Explain to the kids that parents need to work hard so they can earn money in the form of salary or income. After working, it is the only time that we receive money.

4.  DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN WANTS AND NEEDS. This will give kids the idea on how to prioritize, more so when funds are limited. Discuss that needs are things we cannot live without like food, shelter, and clothing, and wants are things that we can live without like toys and gadgets.

5.  VALUE DELAYED GRATIFICATION. Kids need to be taught that not everything they want should be given to them every time upon their request. They either have to earn it or spend their savings on it but only after seriously considering spending precious money at the best time possible.

“Yna’s pretty in pink Swan Princess soiree”
Sun.Star Davao, July 10, 2018

Maria Yllana “Yna” Sabrine Crisostomo recently celebrated her first birthday and christening with a whimsical Swan Princess theme at the Grand Hall of the World Palace Hotel.

Yna is the fourth and youngest child of businessman Icarius "Sol" Lim Crisostomo and Ivy Sabrine Crisostomo whose family owns World Palace, the fitting venue for the merry occasion. The celebration also coincided with the inauguration and blessing of the new function hall.

“We decided to have a Swan Princess theme with a twist as we incorporated ballerinas and ponies consistently in the different elements of the event design”, shares Pretty Little Party Davao’s Aileen Abadilla.

As guests entered the party, they gamely posed for pictures at The Happy Booth while the young ones were welcomed with enchanting swan wings and Swan Princess pillows displayed on silver kiddie tiffany chairs.

Swan Princess plush toys were also perching gracefully on blush furry table toppers which added a magical touch to the adult guest tables.

The main backdrop showcased a printed blush ballerina pattern with Yna’s Swan Princess logo while the side backdrops in serene blue highlighted the pink pony printed design.

“We also had breathtaking blooms by Eufloria PH in Pretty Little Party Davao's stylized custom boxes with each pair showcasing our swan ballerina and pony patterns”, says Aileen.

On the other hand, the dessert table was stylishly dressed in a three-layer blush tutu table skirt with gold decors and dessert display stands, perfectly emphasizing the two-tier Swan Princess fondant cake by Jackie Martinez of Crafty Cakes and Cupcakes. Swan and rose cake pops; chocolate mousse dessert shooters; and ballerina and pony sugar cookies brought big smiles to the sweet tooth as well.

Pretty Little Party Davao likewise set up an entertaining cupcake and cookie decorating station by Sweet Advocate, where mommies and kiddos alike bonded and decorated their own delectable creations with a plethora of sprinkles and frosting.

Another fun food booth turned interactive activity was Cherrie’s Ice Cream and Cookie station which deliciously offered guests an assortment of artisan flavors created by Cherry Si.

Jymmez Infiesto from Bonjee Entertainment hosted enjoyable party games and facilitated an exhilarating bubble show to engage not just the kids but even parents alike with toys, school supplies and mouthwatering sweets as game prizes.

Towards the end of the party, all the godparents were called on stage and thoughtfully given bespoke Swan Princess fur pillows also by Pretty Little Party Davao.

Mommy Ivy couldn’t be any happier seeing how the celebration turned out. “The swan princess theme was both feminine and elegant and it captured the sophistication that I wanted for the event. Everything from all the printables, to the themed dessert table, the darling pink fur table setting, the giveaways for both the godparents and children; they were just perfect! Aileen was able to deliver beyond expectations!”, she gushes.

Be a buddy, not a bully

“Be a buddy, not a bully”
Sun.Star Davao, July 28, 2018

School has started already for some while others will bid goodbye to their summer break this week.

Much excitement is building up on who is going to be in the same class for the school year. However, with this anticipation also comes an impending sense of dread for a few as they fearfully ask, “Will they be classmates with the bully again?”.
Bullying presents itself in many ugly ways. It might be a recurring situation where one is humiliated by a bully or called cruel names; other times, physically intimidated by force. In older kids, it can be a group of mean girls or boys deliberately letting a person feel unwelcome or excluded from being part of a certain “clique”. And, with technology, the risk of cyberbullying, where a single social media post or text message can spread mean words, misinformation or lies, is all too real.
Bullying 101
Henry Yap, a registered guidance counselor, shares that bullying is “defined by RA 10627, as a severe or repeated act of one person to another that causes damage to the well-being of the other person”.
In school, bullying may start as early as Grade 1. Some of the warning signs include a change of behavior like becoming too aggressive or passive in school or at home. “At times, grades will also be affected, and some children refuse to go back to the place where he or she may have encountered the bully”, says Sashi Cagampang who works at the Guidance Office of a private school in Davao City.
Henry reminds victims of bullying that they must not be ashamed or afraid to share their experience with their parents, siblings or any person whom they feel comfortable to talk to.
“It is absolutely necessary that a bullying report is handled with urgency and be dealt with accordingly. However, we should also consider that the perpetrator (the bully) is also volatile and who also should be handled with care and with an understanding of his/her demeanor”, explains Henry.
He observes that “at times, an individual may be accused of being a bully yet not knowing that this person may have been experiencing some sort of maladjustment that requires clinical attention”.

Why do people bully? The website, educatorstechnology.com, cites the possible reasons: “To pretend they are tough; To try to get others to like them; To hide their own fears; They copy others who bully; They are unhappy; They don’t like who they are”, and a host of other causes.
Stand up, speak out

According to Henry and Sashi, parents must empower their child to have the courage to report and seek help from his or her teachers, guidance/school counselor, or any school personnel who may help him or her right away.

The two counselors encourage parents to listen to their children’s bully story calmly. “Some children are scared to honestly share their experience because of how their parents may react so it would be best if it is dealt with in a calm manner but showing them utmost support, love and comfort”, they advise.

In addition, “parents can help their son or daughter by improving their social skills by seeking the help of a professional who can journey with the child in his or her healing process”.

As a community, “a character campaign needs to be done which will focus on the good traits and characteristics to avoid bullying and to build the child’s personhood”.

Moreover, Henry and Sashi stressed that campaigns on how to identify a bullying situation and a bully may also be a vital source of awareness so that kids, including the bystanders (someone who is present when bullying takes place but does not take part in it), may know when to report and how to deal with these situations.

Sticks and stones

With regard to cyberbullying, adults can protect the kids by regulating their access towards social media. “In the first place, they should not have any social media accounts because they may not yet be of legal age. But, the alarming reality is that they have access to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the like, hence values and character formation, that is, developing the good manners and right conduct (GMRC), is the best thing to protect the child”, underscores Henry.

Likewise, parents should teach their children to be self-confident and invest time and attention towards uplifting their child’s self-worth. “Self-empowerment, motivational words, and teaching social skills” are among the effective ways to bully-proof one’s child.

But, what if we turn out to be the parents of the bully?

“IT ALL GOES BACK TO PARENTING. Parenting can be the best source to avoid perpetrators of bullying. The home is the first place where a child is taught to be respectful, kind and loving to another. The parents are the keys to raising a child who will not cause harm to his or her peers”, emphasizes Henry.

There is an adage which goes like this, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me”. But, remember, hurtful words pierce through the heart and soul and may leave scars forever.
No matter what the age, bullying is in our midst and the power to turn that bully into a buddy certainly lies in our hands. Let’s spread kindness!

“Shutter-happy moments with SweetEscape”
Sun.Star Davao, August 11, 2018

When traveling, we usually face this never-ending challenge of who will take our family photos.

Most often, we end up relying on the kindness of strangers; or bring a bulky tripod or the ubiquitous selfie stick to shoot our group snaps. However, if pressed for time, these hurriedly-taken pictures do not live up to our expectations, making us wish that there was a reliable photographer who could beautifully capture our family’s favorite wanderlust moments.

Enter SweetEscape. Launched in 2016, the photographer booking-app has an impressive network of more than 2,000 curated photographers across more than 400 cities around the world. Its mission is “to make professional photography easy and affordable for anyone for any occasion around the world”.

SweetEscape is the brainchild of David Soong, an Indonesian, who started the holiday photography service “to solve his own problem”.

MAKE EVERY MOMENT MEMORABLE. Launched in 2016, SweetEscape is a photographer booking-app which has an impressive network of more than 2,000 curated photographers across more than 400 cities around the world. The app allows clients to book a two-hour photo session anywhere, anytime in the world, in less than two minutes”, says SweetEscape’s country launcher Gadis Lukman.
“I’m a photographer and the biggest irony was that I did not have good family pictures when I traveled. The idea of SweetEscape is to have a local friend (photographer) who will help you preserve precious moments through photos. I believe, those moments with your loved ones are priceless”, enthuses SweetEscape’s CEO and founder.

Our very own sweet escape

My family and I got to personally experience the magic of SweetEscape when we had our vacation in Canada last June.

For my mother-in-law's 80th birthday, the whole family flew to Vancouver to celebrate this significant milestone. It was a rare time where everybody gathered in just one country, so we planned to document this wonderful occasion with a family pictorial. But, alas, who do we contact? We did not personally know of a local photographer whose expertise was already tried and tested.

‘ANNE’YEONG! Erwan Heussaff and Anne Curtis-Heussaff, a certified K-Drama fan,
set their pre-nuptial pictorial in Korea.

Fortunately, my sister-in-law remembered that her younger sister had tried SweetEscape in Australia for a pre-nuptial shoot a few months ago. And, the results were amazing!

I quickly downloaded the SweetEscape app and booked our preferred schedule and venue for the pictorial. After two days, we were merrily shooting at VanDusen Botanical Garden with the amiable Arnold Limantono who has years of professional experience as a topnotch photographer in Indonesia and Canada.

BONJOUR! GP Reyes, Andi Manzano-Reyes and daughter Olivia in Paris
For two hours, we posed as a family (all 17 of us from ages eighty-three to three years old) under Arnold’s superb direction. Occasionally, he would break us into separate groups and shoot spontaneous photos of each family.

The final photos were truly breathtaking and candidly immortalized the bliss and closeness we enjoyed as a clan. These delightful snaps were included in a photo book lovingly given as a gift to commemorate my dear M.I.L.'s 80th birthday.

Now snapping in the Philippines

SweetEscape is now spreading its wings in the acclaimed selfie capital of the world, the Philippines! It has a dedicated local team and market-specific promotions to provide even better service for the Filipinos.

For first time users in the Philippines, use the promo code LONGWEEKEND and avail of a special deal of USD 50 (PhP2,600) off plus thirty extra photos from August 9-31, 2018.

It also has an ongoing exclusive deal for Citi cardholders who get the chance to enjoy USD 50 off and USD 50 cashback (in SweetEscape credits) for photo shoots around the world when they pay with their Citi credit card and use the promo code LOVE2CLICK until May 31, 2019.

G’DAY, MATE! Cat Juan-Ledesma with husband Carlo Ledesma and kids Fin and Nara in Sydney, Australia.

In addition, the company is exploring various partnership opportunities with local brands to get more awareness and traction from the new market.

"Our objective is to partner with the right brands to help clients capture their cherished moments. SweetEscape can be used for birthdays, family holidays, pre-wedding, and every other occasion, and not limited to time and place. We are open to various kinds of partnership with brands who believe in the same mission and care about high-quality photos to drive high-quality content,” says SweetEscape’s country launcher Gadis Lukman.

“We also believe that we are strengthening the freelance economy as we create opportunities for photographers to earn additional income,” he explains.

“SweetEscape makes every moment memorable. It’s like having a local friend to capture the most intimate, raw, unedited memories. It’s simple and easy, yet something that can be treasured for years to come”, concludes its shutter-happy founder David.

"Starting young: Davao boy joins World Golf Championship”
Sun.Star Davao, August 24, 2018

Seven-year-old David James Wee Teves from Davao City recently joined the U.S. Kids World Golf Championship held at the historic and world-famous Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, U.S.A.

David, who also happens to be my nephew, was the sole Dabawenyo and only 7-year old player on the Philippine team joining more than 1,500 kids representing more than 50 countries including the U.S., Canada, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Czech Republic, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, England, South Korea, Japan, and China.

Junior golfer

“Golf started early for David.  I can remember him playing with toy clubs when he was just 2 years old”, daddy James enthuses.

But it was not until David was 6 years old that he would tag along with his dad, also an avid golfer, to the local driving range.  This is also where they met his coach Roland Revilleza who further nurtured his skills and encouraged him to play and enjoy golf.

When he turned 7, David played in local tournaments at Apo Golf and Country Club and at Rancho Palos Verdes and, on several occasions, emerged as a champion of his age group. “We would always remind him to enjoy the game and play his best, win or lose.  Quitters will never be winners”, challenges mommy Eileen.

Aside from excelling in golf, David was the first runner-up for the Grade 1 level of the citywide Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge and bronze medalist in the kata division of the Manuel Veguillas Memorial Karate Cup early this year.

In May 2018, David won the U.S. Kids World Golf Championship qualifying event for the 7-year old category held at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Cavite City.

World-class golf

After 24 hours of travel and in between jet lag, the family finally arrived at Pinehurst to a superbly world-class reception during the first week of August.

Colorful flags from all participating countries lined both sides of the long road greeting players as they drove up the famed Pinehurst No. 2.  One of the highlights of the event was the Parade of Nations where the Philippine team (Davao, Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan and Manila), accompanied by the Pinehurst marching band, took turns carrying the Philippine flag and proudly marching for the country, along with teams from around the world.  “Just like the Olympics!”, David playfully adds.

With an emphasis on fun and being family-friendly, on the lineup was the Parent/Child Team Tournament, the Honda Experience sponsored by Honda of Japan where kids and adults played mini golf; and the Team Challenge, a 9-hole event played under a player/friend or player/player format.

Daddy caddie

On tournament day, the names of the countries were shouted out as each representative teed up to hit the first shot.  Caddies, all with names of their players proudly emblazoned on the backs of their uniforms, carried golf bags with matching team colors and flags.

After the 3-day event, Bento Assis of Brazil, the reigning champion of the age 6 division of last year, was declared as the winner, besting all 115 players under the aged 7 division.

“For us, joining the championship is already an achievement and seeing David playing and enjoying with other kids from all over the world are enough memories to last for a lifetime”, beams James who served as his son’s caddie.

“During the tournament, my dad and I learned how to get used to the speed of the greens, to stay focused as the game may not always be going well, and to play by the rules.  My dad would always remind me that whatever happens on the golf course stays on the golf course.  He is my coach and caddie but, after the game, he is my Papa and I am...David!”, declares the Davao Christian High School grade 2 student.

At home, at last, and with a big smile, David gets back to be the kid that he is.

David is set to join the following tournaments in the next few months: Kids Golf World Championship (Malaysia, Dec. 2018); Future Champion Golf Disney World (Florida, Dec. 2018); IMG-Junior World Championship (Manila, March 2019); and US Kids Golf Qualifying for Age 8 Division (Manila, March 2019).

Palengke Boy: The family's digital wet market buddy

“Palengke Boy: The family’s digital wet market buddy”
Sun.Star Davao, September 8, 2018

Ever craved for home-cooked fresh shrimps for dinner but, alas, a visit to the wet market is out of the way? Or, did your vegetable and meat supplies run out in the middle of the week, so you end up splurging at the grocery because a trip to Bankerohan, Davao’s largest public market, can be such a hassle?

Palengke Boy’s proprietor Hanz Concepcion (center) shares that after its launch last July in Davao City, downloads on its Android app have reached more than a thousand. Joining him in this worthwhile endeavor are seasoned website, mobile app and POS developers Francis Adan (left) and Ariz Gayorgor (right).

Digital bayong
Palengke Boy’s digital palengke store hours are from 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, with deliveries up to 9:00 pm.

I typically use the Palengke Boy Android app after my kids leave for school right before 7:00 a.m.

Conveniently divided into different sections such as meat, seafood, fruit, spices, vegetable, and others (e.g., lumpia wrapper, fresh mami, cooking oil, rice, and egg), Palengke Boy offers a cornucopia of choices from each section just like navigating through the wet market myself, sans the traffic and heavy baskets.
It only takes me between 5 and 10 minutes from the time I place my order to the time I check out my digital bayong. Options for payment include cash on delivery and bank transfers through BPI, BDO and Metrobank.
Regular updates regarding the status of the orders are sent through text message and e-mail to the customers.

100% fresh at wet market prices
“Our market purchasers are moms and dads who have ample experience in dealing with real wet market scenarios, specifically in ensuring quality and right weight”, assures Hans.
“Palengke Boy’s prices are at par with Bankerohan market prices because it does not keep goods for inventory, hence, the market directly dictates the price. Secondly, wet market landscapes will tell you that there are places where goods can be bought directly, so we get each category in specific places”, he explains.
Although perfecting a system that is new can be a heart-pounding exercise, Hans feels very fulfilled when he and his team receive touching messages from grateful stay-at-home moms who have no yayas; children who can now do marketing for their old folks even if they are out of the country; and satisfied customers who appreciate the additional savings and convenience because of the efficient service.
“The excitement that this project has brought to many Dabawenyos has been very inspiring. We are continuously passionate about making our customers win. To those who have already been using the site and the app, thank you very much, you all had been a wonderful encouragement to a lot of people behind the name! God willing, Palengke Boy will be able to open all over the country at one area every 6 months starting January of next year”, shares Hans with pride.
Certainly, Palengke Boy does not only deliver a digital bayong brimming with our household’s much-needed supplies at just a click away but more importantly, the luxury of enjoying memorable family meals that spell quality time.

“#inFAIRness: A call for gender equality”
                                 Sun.Star Davao, October 6, 2018

Now that finding a trustworthy kasambahay is becoming extra challenging, working parents need to rely on each other even more in running the household efficiently.

Most often, though, the tough balancing act primarily rests on the women as they painstakingly juggle chores, being mothers, and working full-time.

“At home, unless men take on a greater share of domestic responsibilities, many women will drop out of the labor force from which could negatively affect our economy”, states a report, “The Power of Parity: Advancing Women’s Equality in Asia Pacific”.

Recently, Dabawenyos joined the nationwide call for gender equality at the Davao City Hall as they participated in the regional launch of #inFAIRness, a campaign supported by Investing in Women, an initiative of the Australian Government; SPARK! Philippines; and Mr. Click eMarketing Services, Inc. Separate launches were also conducted in Manila and Cebu.

The #inFAIRness movement seeks to “normalize the role of men at home and encourage women’s economic empowerment”.

Speaking on behalf of the City Government of Davao was Councilor Avegayle Omalza while Political and Public Affairs Counsellor Clare Duffield represented the Australian Embassy. Local government officials, advocacy and transport groups, as well as civil society leaders attended the event.

“We are working on promoting shared tasks at home, recognizing the importance of women’s economic role, and breaking stereotypes”, says SPARK! Philippines Executive Director Mikaela Teves.

SPARK! Philippines or Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (Alliance of Women for Reform and Progress) has “launched projects that focus on the protection of women’s rights, promotion of gender equality, and advancing women’s economic and political role”.

The #inFAIRness campaign aims to employ both traditional and digital approaches to drive public awareness around the gender equality agenda. In relation to this, stickers with gender equality messages were posted in public utility vehicles throughout Davao in partnership with the Department of Transportation and the local city government.

“This will be accompanied by a social media campaign, all in the hope of encouraging Dabawenyos to take up the advocacy and become part of a nationwide community that believes in a fair and equal Philippines,”, explains Mr. Click President Romeo Sustiguer, Jr. Mr. Click eMarketing Services, Inc. has “extensive experience in implementing digital marketing projects and knowledgeable in producing online contents and branding messages”.

“Evangel Songsters Davao in South Korea”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 3, 2018

The Evangel Songsters Davao proudly received the Young Singers Incentive Prize at the 14th Busan Choral Festival and Competition held last October 17-20, 2018 in South Korea.

The acclaimed singing group is under the baton of Nemuel Danuco, one of the premier musicians in the city. The choir was founded in October 2016 through the initiative of Zion’s Praise Music Incorporated, a music education provider which has been actively partnering with various schools since 2009.

Composed of twenty-eight young individuals aged 9 to 18 years old from different Davao-based schools, the Evangel Songsters Davao’s first batch has previously competed at the 10th Orientale Concentus in Singapore where it bagged three silver grade awards in the Folk Song, Mixed and Youth categories.
“Throughout its festival and competition history, Busan Choral has fostered cultural exchange and promoted high-quality choral music by attracting notable artists, conductors, and composers to one of Asia’s top choral festivals”, states its official Facebook page.

At the recent Busan Choral Festival and Competition, the Evangel competed in two categories namely, the youth and ethnic categories. Assisting Mr. Danuco during the competition was Ms. Kerby Niña Pogoy.
(From left) Kerby Niña Pogoy (Evangel Songsters’ Assisting Director); Nemuel Danuco (Evangel Songsters’ choirmaster and Zion’s Praise Music Inc. national events director); and
Pastor Edgar Soriano (Zion’s Praise Music Inc. president)
For the youth competition, the Evangel zealously sang “The Greatest Showman” medley (arranged by Richard Samuel Deligero) and Jam Sol Recedit (by Horation Parker).  On the other hand, the students impressed the audience with their passionate rendition of “Rosas Pandan” (arranged by George G. Hernandez), “Tuksuhan” (arranged by Ramon P. Santos), “Iyeyan” (Sidney Boquiren) and “Paru-parong Bukid” (arranged by George G. Hernandez) during the ethnic category.

Aside from the competition proper, the Evangel Songsters were invited to showcase their amazing talents at the SeoMyeon Subway Station as part of their outreach program. They were joined by the AZ Singers from Japan and the Tarlac National High School (TNHS) SPA Music Chorale, also from the Philippines, when they serenaded the busy subway station.

In addition, the students were given the chance to join choral workshops by Dr. Anton Armstrong, the choral festival’s president of the juries who is a decorated conductor and professor of music in Olaf University (U.S.A.).

The citizens of Busan likewise enjoyed the wonderful musical performances through the nightly concerts by the Stile Antico from England, Koro Ilustrado from the Philippines and the seven selected youth choirs, which included the Evangel Songsters.

At the awarding ceremony, the participating youth choirs sang “One Song” which beautifully symbolized unity amidst diversity. Just like the song’s heartwarming message, the unforgettable experience of performing together unified the choir members from numerous countries as they joined the rehearsal as one team and made lasting friendships.

To close the festival, fifty choirs from twelve countries were treated to an enjoyable afternoon of sightseeing during the Chorale Parade in Dongbaek Island.

“Judge Virgie Europa’s “A Harvest of Colors” solo art exhibit”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 17, 2018

Retired Regional Trial Court Judge Virginia Hofilena-Europa recently held her first solo art exhibit during her 72nd birthday with the theme, “A Harvest of Colors”.
The well-respected and multi-talented artist is the past national president of Toastmasters International District 75; former council president of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Davao Council; lady founder of the Sigma Tau Mu Sorority of the Ateneo de Davao College of Law; as well as the co-founder of the Davao Lady Lawyers Association.
Judge Gie, as she is fondly called, interestingly discovered her talent for the arts only after her retirement from the judiciary four years ago. “I never had an inkling that I could paint. But, because I was encouraged by my friends from the Toastmasters Artists Group, I learned to love painting with acrylic as my medium. I adore the color of paints! Painting keeps me busy and productive”, she smiles.
To further develop her newfound passion, Judge Gie enrolled in art sessions with Dabawenya artist Dadai Joaquin. “Dadai brought out the best in me’, she intimates.
Her first solo exhibit featured 35 artworks with mostly nature and flowers as her subjects. “It took me 20 months to finish all the artworks featured in my exhibit”, shares Judge Gie who is the widow of past Integrated Bar of the Philippines Eastern Mindanao governor Atty. Cesar Europa. Their son, Atty. Jikjik Europa, is also the former IBP governor of Eastern Mindanao.
Among the special guests at the “Harvest of Colors” exhibit were judges and lawyers as well as dear friends from the Toastmasters and GSP Council. Court of Appeals Justice Loida P. Kahulugan did the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon to open the exhibit.

Several guests bought Judge Gie’s beautiful artworks. They included Perla Kwan, owner of Precious International School of Davao and Vicky Leuterio, owner of Holy Child College. Both paintings are now displayed at their respective offices.

Also among the guests was renowned artist Victor Secuya, fresh from his exhibit in Brussels. I felt so deeply honored because Vic purchased one of my paintings”, discloses Judge Gie.

Ever the achiever, Judge Gie is already preparing for her next exhibit which she intends to stage when she turns 75 years old. “This time, I plan to exhibit 75 paintings”, she announces with excitement.

The “Harvest of Colors” art exhibit is still available for viewing at Grub Resto (along Duterte St.), the headquarters of the Toastmasters Artist Group.

Special thanks to Vinky Europa for the photos.

“Paragon Davao: Where possibilities are endless”
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 1, 2018

Leading VisMin property developer Cebu Landmasters, Inc. (CLI) in partnership with Davao’s Villa-Abrille family through joint ventures, YHEST Realty & Development Corp. and YHES Inc., fortified its presence in Davao City as it recently kicked off two key landmark projects in the second fastest-growing economy in the country.

The partners broke ground, graced by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, on a former golf course, Davao Matina Golf Club, that will be transformed into the 22-hectare Central Business District called Davao Global Township (DGT) and unveiled a vibrant mixed-use lifestyle destination, The Paragon Davao. The latter will be anchored by a hotel managed by world-renowned The Ascott Limited, a residential tower, lifestyle mall, and convention center.

Frederick Huang Yuson, president of YHEST Realty & Development Corp. and YHES Inc. expressed that he is pleased to partner with VisMin’s best developer Cebu Landmasters to bring projects to the city which will spur development in this part of the Davao metropolis. “We consider this our way of giving back to Davao”, he shared during the launch at The Marco Polo Davao’s grand ballroom.

Yuson is a fifth-generation descendant of Francisco “Juna” Villa-Abrille, considered as one of Davao’s pioneers. Juna and his heirs have donated parcels of land to accelerate the development of Davao City. In 1969, his philanthropic contributions earned him the distinction of being one of the first Datu Bago awardees (posthumous), the highest honor ever bestowed to a son of Davao.  A downtown street (Villa-Abrille) was also named after him.

CLI and members of the family under the joint venture YHEST Realty and Development Corp. will commence Phase 1 of the 22-hectare Davao Global Township located in Matina that will feature an office tower, two residential towers, retail buildings, a cineplex mall, and a convention center.

Nearby is the mixed-use The Paragon Davao, which CLI is developing in partnership with Davao Filandia Realty Corp. and Yuson Strategic Holdings Inc. under the joint venture YHES Inc. The project is expected to help pump-prime economic activity in southeastern Davao City where Davao Global Township is also located. The Paragon Davao’s first phase will house a 26-storey residential tower to be named One Paragon Place; a 263-room Citadines Paragon Davao to be managed by The Ascott Limited – one of the world’s leading lodging owner-operators; The Paragon Davao Convention Center; and The Paragon Davao Lifestyle Mall.

The project with a 1.9-hectare lot area is set for completion in 2022. The lifestyle destination was conceptualized and designed by Callison RTKL in collaboration with top Philippine architectural firm RMDA.

CLI’s partners revealed in previous statements that they had been approached by other developers but chose the Cebu-based listed real estate company because of its keen feel of the VisMin market. This is evidenced, they pointed out, by the quick take-up of their first joint venture project together in the city—the MesaTierra Garden residences in Davao—which is now 96-percent sold.

“The Soberanos are not only our partners, but they are also family to us,” stressed Yuson.

We share photos of the Davao Global Township groundbreaking and The Paragon’s launch by ace photographers Josiah Bacarro and Marlon Advincula.

"A merry UAE Christmas”
Sun.Star Davao, December 15, 2018

Kabayan!”, fellow Filipinos would exclaim in surprise after they finally figure out which country we came from.  This is what we were greeted with by overseas Filipinos workers we met in Dubai.  These unsung heroes, over half a million strong, are among the largest nationalities in this global city.

Everywhere we went during our Christmas vacation, we would encounter hardworking and friendly ‘kabayans’ in restaurants, shops, hotels, and amusement parks.  Even the paging system at one of the malls amusingly sounded like we were at a department store in the Philippines as the lady announcer was speaking in English with a distinct Filipino accent!
December is one of the best months to travel to Dubai.  Temperatures usually drop to an average of 25 degrees Celsius, a refreshing treat in a desert environment as any visitor explores the myriad of attractions.

For shoppers looking for bargains, December in Dubai is also an exciting time as mall-wide sales already start even before the much-anticipated Dubai Shopping Festival in January.
Our Christmas holiday in the United Arab Emirates gave us a delightful glimpse of what the enchanting country had in store for the entire family---an eclectic mix of culture, shopping, nature, entertainment, adventure, and architectural wonders.

Here is my personal list of the ten must-do family-friendly activities in the UAE:

1. The DUBAI MIRACLE GARDEN, open from mid-November to mid-May, is a sight to behold with 72,000 square meters of beautifully landscaped gardens featuring 150 million flowers in bloom.

Every year, the keepers meticulously change its designs and concepts so that visitors could look forward to something new.
2. For those seeking to experience ancient Dubai, head on to the DUBAI MUSEUM which is housed in the Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest existing building in the city. The museum highlights Dubai’s rich history and heritage prior to the discovery of oil.

Exhibits and dioramas give tourists a peek of the Emiratis’ everyday life and livelihood.
3. For the big-time spender or just plain curious, the GOLD SOUK is a definite place to be. Marvel at the endless display of shining, shimmering and splendid gold and silver jewelry as well as precious metals and stones.

Don’t forget to take a snap with the Star of Taiba, the world’s largest gold ring as certified by the  Guinness World Records.  It weighs an incredible 64 kg and is lavishly studded with 5.17 kg of Swarovski stones.
Just nearby is the SPICE SOUK where you can buy traditional spices, herbs, oils, teas, and nuts.
4. A sojourn to Dubai will never be complete without the action-packed DESERT SAFARI where 4 x 4 Land Cruisers take you to an adrenaline-pumping ride across 30-feet high red dunes.
Cap the magical experience with a sunset CAMEL RIDE followed by an ARABIC DINNER at a desert camp.
A Tanoura and belly dancing show, henna tattoo and sheesha experience are usually included in the dinner package, too.

5. SKI DUBAI is consistently rated as among the world’s best indoor ski resorts. Located at the Mall of Emirates, the 4,500 square-meter snow park offers a plethora of  ‘cool’ activities such as skiing, sledging, tobogganing, chairlift riding, zip line, and even up close personal encounters with penguins!

6. Enjoy “country-hopping” at the GLOBAL VILLAGE, literally, a world-class destination for the whole family. Each nation is represented in this massive theme park-like place with designated pavillions highlighting its unique culture, cuisine, entertainment, and crafts. Shopping and dining here are on a level beyond just entertaining but most importantly, educational as well.

7. View the breathtaking Dubai skyline from the 828 meter-BURJ KHALIFA, the world’s tallest building which stamped the city’s transition from an oil-based economy to service and tourism. Situated at the base of this renowned skyscraper are the colossal Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain, both equally grand and impressive.
8. At the BURJ AL ARAB, have high tea or dinner at this luxurious five-star hotel which has become one of Dubai’s most recognized icons because of its one-of-a-kind ship sail design.

Towards sunset, walk along the shores of JUMEIRAH BEACH before treating yourself to a tasty meal at the hip Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR).
9. The IMG WORLDS OF ADVENTURE is the largest temperature-controlled indoor themed entertainment destination in the world with five epic zones which include Cartoon Network, Marvel and the Lost Valley. Even at peak seasons such as December, lining up is hassle-free due to the comfortable airconditioning.

10. Should you have more time in your hands, a quick escape to ABU DHABI, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, is worth the trip! Feast your eyes on LOUVRE ABU DHABI'S exquisite art pieces either acquired or on loan from Louvre Paris.

Next, schedule a visit to the SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE, the largest mosque in the country.

Complete your Abu Dhabi adventure with a pit stop at FERRARI WORLD and get the thrill of your lives riding the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster withthe lightning speed of 0 to 240km/h in 4.9 seconds.

Turkish Winter Delight

“Turkish winter delight”
Sun.Star Davao, January 12, 2018

On Christmas eve, I was inside our hotel room when I heard the faint melody of an all too familiar Yuletide song.

Quickly, I stepped outside the room and was greeted with “Let’s sing Merry Christmas and a happy holiday, this season may we never forget the love we have for Jesus….”.

I immediately had goosebumps and I must admit, the sentimental in me got teary-eyed. For thousands of miles away from the Philippines, “Christmas in our Hearts” was magically playing in our exotic cave hideaway, the Kelebek Special Cave Hotel in Cappadocia. Unbelievably, there was no escaping Jose Mari Chan even in Turkey!

I fondly carried this cherished memory along with other countless more during our recent Christmas family trip to Turkey where we visited old charm-historic Istanbul, Troy, Canakkale, Kusadasi, Ephesus, Pamukkale, and our hands-down favorite, Cappadocia.

Fairy chimneys beyond dreams

Cappadocia is found in the region southeast of the Turkish capital Ankara. It is world-renowned for its “fairy chimneys”. These natural wonders were created millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions which rained ash across what is now Turkey. Erosion caused the wearing down of the softer tuff which gave way to pillars standing tall as 130 feet. Because the harder basalt eroded more slowly, it formed a mushroom-shaped cap over each tuff.
Among the sites where we saw these breathtaking natural formations were the Goreme Open Air Museum where stunning rock-cut churches were still adorned with Byzantine frescoes (wall paintings) and impressively preserved; and Pasabag Valley or Monks Valley featuring imposing tuffs with twin and even triple rock caps called mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys.

Due to its strategic location, Cappadocia was often prized by medieval invaders, occupied and looted after raids and sieges. To protect themselves, people took refuge in cellars and caves, eventually building underground cities.  To date, there are 36 underground cities in Cappadocia and we had the occasion to visit the widest one, Kaymakli Underground City. It was a memorable activity for the family as we navigated through narrow tunnels which amazingly led to cellars, storage areas, stables, among others, all once thriving with dwellers and animals beneath the ground.

Although the strong wind conditions nixed our scheduled hot air balloon ride, we nevertheless had fun, not expecting that a special surprise awaited us very early the next day after the exhilarating trip to the caves.

When we woke up, snow was falling in Cappadocia for the first time in winter.
The spellbinding fairy chimneys were capped with pure white snow and were a marvelous sight to behold. Oh, it made us fall in love with this captivating place even more!

Where east meets west

On our first day in Istanbul, known in the old times as Constantinople, we hit off with a walking tour led by our very capable licensed guide Tarik Saylan, who was born and raised locally.
He took us to Hagia Sophia, considered as one of the most important buildings in the history of world architecture. In over a thousand years, it has served as a cathedral during the time of Emperor Constantinople, to a mosque during the time of the Ottoman sultans, and now a museum.

Adjacent was the Topkapi Palace which was the main palace of the Ottomans until 1856.

The following day, we visited the Hippodrome, a center for sports activities, ceremonies including thrilling chariot races during the Roman and Byzantine era.

Next up was my husband’s favorite, the Blue Mosque.  Highly regarded and acclaimed for its blue Iznik tiles, the mosque was built during the Ottoman period and is the second largest mosque in Istanbul.

We ended our tour at the Underground Cistern which used to be the largest water cistern in Istanbul and the major water reservoir during the Constantinople period.

After a satisfying trip to the Grand Bazaar where we scored big deals on delectable Turkish delicacies and souvenirs, we boarded the Bosphorus Cruise which had us traveling along the majestic waterway which is straddled between Europe and Asia and where we enjoyed views of remarkable historical buildings, bridges, castles and charming mansions from the 19th and 20th century.

On our free days, we adventurously used the public transport and rode the funicular, tram, and metro, all interlinked and capable of bringing any passenger to major points in the city.

Lady luck must be on our side as there was a city-wide “Indirim” (that means discount or sale in Turkish) at the various malls and shops in time for the winter season.

History comes alive

Our family also traveled long hours on the road to the incredible ancient city of Troy and the wooden replica of the Trojan horse.

We explored Ephesus, one of the great cities of antiquity, which included the remains of the fabled Temple of Artemis, Odeon, Hadrian’s Temple, Library of Celsus, Agora and the Great Theatre.

Another place which caught our hearts was the humble and very modest chapel known as the House of Virgin Mary where it is believed that the Holy Mother spent her final years.

We likewise walked along the ancient ruins at Hierapolis or “Holy City” and visited Pamukkale’s popular thermal pools.

In the freezing weather, we took off our shoes and experienced the soothing hot spring. The picturesque contrast between the glistening pools and the travertine, a type of white limestone deposited by thermal waters, took our breaths away.

Near the pools is another thermal pool which was built by Marc Anthony for the enchanting Cleopatra.

Turkish delight

Beyond the sights, another aspect that endeared Turkey to our family was the glorious food. We immensely enjoyed the kebabs, olives, cheese, bread (mostly served for free), dried fruits, Turkish ice cream, and desserts (hey, we had honeycomb for breakfast!). Not only were they lezzetli (delicious) and healthy but, surprisingly, reasonably priced.

An average meal would cost 25 to 30 lira (PhP250-300) per person. Our family of four would usually order only three dishes and share them because of the generous portions. A small bottle of water is only 1 lira (PhP10 pesos) and 1.5 liters of water is 2 lira (PhP20). One big bread is 1.20 lira (PhP12 pesos).

Our Christmas eve dinner at Pumpkin Restaurant (Cappadocia) was a mouthwatering four-course meal (with lamb shank as the main course) at only 100 lira (PhP1,000) per head.

My family and I will also never forget the hospitable locals that we were blessed to meet. During the twelve days we were in Turkey, we were fortunate to encounter warm, funny, thoughtful and gracious tour guides, sales assistants, waiters, hotel personnel, and drivers.

Tarik, our private tour guide for the entire trip, lovingly took care of us like his own family.
When we were commuting, locals were kind enough to guide us in the right direction even to the point of leading us to our stop, not minding if it was out of their way. During two separate times, fellow metro passengers would chat with me and wished me a wonderful stay.

For me, above all, these amiable everyday people were what made Turkey truly delightful!

A big thank you to Tarik Saylan of Istanbul Guided Private Tours for making our family’s Turkey trip a treasured experience.

“Lugang Café Davao: A taste of contemporary Taiwanese cuisine”
Sun.Star Davao, January 26, 2019

Our family’s endless love affair with the delectable Xiao Long Bao began in 2010. My Manila-based relatives would thoughtfully bring us to Lugang Café’s first branch along Connecticut Street in Greenhills whenever we were in town.
The contemporary Taiwanese restaurant was constantly packed with diners, and long queues were the usual sight.

Who wouldn’t wait patiently for an enticing taste of the heavenly steamed pork dumplings that had both filling and broth? It was a novel experience to gently pick up the delicate dumplings with our chopsticks and transferring them to a soup spoon. Along with some dipping sauce, we bit the Xiao Long Bao’s top off and slowly sucked the hot broth, yearning to devour the rest. One dumpling was never enough. Each of us could top off at least six pieces in one sitting!

Love at first bite

Lugang Café is a member of the Bellagio Group of Restaurants of Shanghai and is more popularly known in China as Bellagio Café. They currently have seventy-nine stores in China, one in Macau, and another in Thailand.

HTCG Premium Food Concepts Inc.'s CFO Annabelle Chua with Lugang Cafe's bestselling Xiao Long Bao
The owners, Peter and Annabelle Chua of HTCG Premium Food Concepts Inc., first got introduced to Lugang Café when they traveled to Shanghai in 2008. They went there to watch the Master’s Tennis Cup tournament and the restaurant was highly recommended by a friend. It was love at first bite and, as they say, the rest is gastronomic history. In November 2010, Lugang Café opened its first branch in Metro Manila.
Through the years, Lugang Cafe has consistently followed the pure essence of Taiwanese cuisine in their mouthwatering dishes with natural ingredients imported from China. This earned the restaurant the prestigious distinction of being in the list of Philippine Tatler's 100 Best Restaurant Awards.

Other successful brands under the HTCG group include Tuantuan Chinese Brasserie, The Dessert Kitchen and the latest, Xiu Fine Cantonese Dining, which is situated at the former Lugang Café in Greenhills.

First Lugang Café outside Manila

Just like the Chuas, Wilson and Jenny Bangayan absolutely love good food. In fact, the enterprising couple belongs to a close-knit group called Wednesday Club which is composed of fellow foodie friends who regularly bond mid-week to enjoy eating together.

“Whenever we travel, we always looked for good food that we can bring to our hometown, Davao City. It’s our way of sharing a slice of the world to our loved ones back home”, shared Wilson.

Their desire to let Dabawenyos have a taste of some of the best cuisines and food resulted in franchises of Red Ribbon, Yakimix and the newest store, Lugang Café at the SM City Davao which officially opened last Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The Davao branch is the first franchise of Lugang Café - Philippines; the first one to open outside Manila; and the eighth outlet under the brand. “We believe that Davao is ready for authentic Taiwanese cuisine”, declared Wilson.

Aside from the famous Xiao Long Bao, guests can feast on the restaurant’s best-sellers such as the scrumptious Three Cup Chicken, Fish Head Steamed with Pickled Pepper, Stir-Fried Beef with Chili Peppers, Spare Ribs with Plum Sauce, Pineapple Fried Rice, and a whole lot more. Wilson said that Lugang Café’s dishes are characterized by their sweet and spicy flavors. “They also have the subtle tastes of basil, chili, and ginger that are distinct in traditional Taiwanese dishes”, he added.

Always leave room for dessert as their towering Bellagio Breeze and refreshing Peanut Smoothie must not be missed.

Lugang Café is located at the Ground Floor, SM Ecoland Annex, Quimpo Boulevard, Ecoland, Matina, Davao City, Philippines. Open from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays and until 9:00 PM for the rest of the week. You may contact them through their phone number 09563066509 for Globe subscribers and 09338195820 for Sun subscribers.
