“Mission: Makeover ‘Ma’am’ “
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 11, 2014

Day in and day out, our kids spend most of their waking hours in school. Acting as our trusted partners in molding our dearest children to be the best that they can be are their kind-hearted and selfless teachers.

In celebration of Teachers’ Day, the Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship (DCHS PTF), of which I am the president for this school-year, treated the school’s well-loved teachers to a much-deserved night of makeup and fashion through a special workshop.

Conducting the exciting workshop was one of Davao’s leading professional makeup artists, Carine Bacani, and the lovely fashion stylist and fellow DCHS mom Erika Soriano-Mata.

Mission : Makeover Ma’am

Carine, originally from Manila, moved to Davao three years ago with her husband and two kids. She is a makeup artist and beauty workshop trainer for private and corporate clients.

She studied makeup artistry at the Maquillage Professionnel School of Makeup Artistry and has worked with close to one hundred clients for activities ranging from debuts, formals, weddings, and corporate seminars.

On the other hand, Erika is a mom of three brilliant kids and the ever supportive and loving wife of Dr. Richard Mata. A graduate of Medical Technology from the San Pedro College, Erika has always turned heads not only for her beauty but for her tasteful fashion style. Recently, she has found a newfound career as a much sought-after speaker for talks on fashion.

Ten-minute Makeup for Busy Teachers

During the workshop, Carine taught and demonstrated the “Ten-Minute Makeup for Busy Teachers” and for a fun night out, the more dramatic smokey eyes using Human Nature and VMV Hypoallergenics’ makeup, our generous sponsors for the event.

Last summer, my sisters-in-law and I along with our friends first met Carine during an intimate makeup workshop session at home. It was a great bonding time with girlfriends as we were taught the basics of makeup using our existing stash and tools.

It was the same jovial atmosphere last pre-Teachers’ Day celebration as the teachers listened eagerly to Carine who shared her practical makeup tips. For instance, Carine shared that according to her pediatrician, did you know that when the speaker wears red lipstick, the listeners tend to be more attentive? Wow, that’s such useful information for teachers yearning for their students’ undivided attention!

Beautiful inside and out

Erika is a dear mommy friend whom I adore to bits! She is beauty and brains personified. I’ve always admired her for her tried and tested taste in fashion. Sometimes, she may be dressed simply in just a plain white shirt and jeans but when she puts her personal take on it through well-chosen accessories, she “levels up” the look.

In the workshop, Erika, who is a former Penshoppe billboard model, imparted sensible ways on how to dress appropriately for different occasions as well as according to one’s body type. She also emphasized the importance of finding your fashion style.

At the end of the workshop, teachers Mary Jane Manseguiao and Cristina Sasube, experienced a total makeover courtesy of Carine and Erika.

Each wearing the day (“no makeup/flawless”) and smokey makeup look by Carine, the two teachers were stunning donned in Erika’s pre-selected ‘surprise’ outfits.

Erika wowed us all as she was only given a budget of P1,250 each for the teachers’ new look which included their semi-formal dresses, accessories and shoes.

We capped the unforgettable night by giving away fantastic raffle prizes from Human Nature, VMV Hypoallergenics and Bloom Facial Spa.

Christian High’s next top model

Two weeks after, the PTF’s pre-Teachers’ Day treat came in handy as the DCHS Student Council organized the school’s annual Teachers’ Day celebration with the theme, “Christian High’s Next Top Model : Setting the Best Example”.

Inspired by the reality hit TV series, “America’s Next Top Model”, excited cheers from students reverberated in the school auditorium as the teachers gamely sashayed on the red carpet with their best looks.

It is worthy to note, however, that the theme of the affair did not only highlight the teachers as ‘fashion models’ but most importantly, it also focused on the educators’ role in molding the students’ character and values and how they have made a significant impact in their students’ lives.

To all the amazing and wonderful teachers in the Philippines and around the world, Happy Teachers’ Day! Cheers to you!
****

The DCHS PTF’s “Mission : Makeover Ma’am” could not have been possible without the all-out support of the ‘glam team’ Ms. Carine Bacani (For bookings, check out www.carinebacani.com; like her on Facebook: Makeup by Carine) and Ms. Erika Soriano-Mata; Human Nature’s Monique Villanueva, Joy Mempin and Sylvia Rieta; VMV Hypoallergenics’ Anna Anastacio, Marie Cortez and Jacklyn Remo; and Bloom Facial and Spa’s Golda Divinagracia. Our sincerest thanks to all of you for making the DCHS advanced Teachers’ Day treat such a memorable one!

Special thanks to Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw for Carine’s photo.

“Qaleesi’s feast with a twist”
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 25, 2014

Mark and Natalie Wee have a fun and unique tradition when it comes to naming their adorable kids.

“We alphabetized our names according to the eldest, which is the dad of course, M (Mark); followed by the mom, N (Natalie). Our firstborn is automatically O (Ogin), then the second P (Pepito), and finally, our youngest...Q!”, Natalie smiles. However, their penchant for finding one-of-a-kind names was put to the test with the letter Q.

“At the time we were following the TV series, Game of Thrones (GOT), and found the character of Daenerys Targaryen who holds the title of a Khaleesi, which means Queen in Dothraki, fascinating. This character then develops into a courageous ruler who is strong-willed with a scholarly mind yet compassionate and honored and loved by her people. All of these characteristics were what we sought in our baby girl”, Natalie reveals.

Finally, they had a name for their darling bundle of joy, Qaleesi Noelle!

Feast with a twist

When they started conceptualizing the first birthday theme of their dearest Qaleesi, the doting parents did not think twice in choosing the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme.

“Instead of GOT’s gory medieval theme though, we gave Qaleesi’s birthday celebration a festive and feminine twist by utilizing gold and pinkish hues”, says Natalie.

Hands-on mom Natalie organized the GOT-themed party at The Apo View grand ballroom in only 6 weeks. “I already knew and trusted my suppliers for this party and thus, the preparations were a breeze!“, she shares.

Natalie and Mark, who own and operate “Hobby with My Hubby” on the side, have always been the DIY kind of parents since their eldest child’s party. For Qaleesi’s party, they designed and printed their own invites using the customized emblem for Q and addressed it in a GOT context.

The main reason why the Wees painstakingly bake and decorate their scrumptious dessert buffet is for their kids' parties and Qaleesi’s party was no exception!

Hobby with My Hubby made a voracious and impressive spread of GOT-themed sweets such as cookies with the design of the emblem and labeled it “Dragonstone Crest”. There were also labels like “Riverrun Boats” for Alor's boat-shaped fruit tarts; “Casterly Rock Tower” for Emily Herrera's French macaron tower; and, “Hodor's Matcha Cheese” and “King's Landing Cake” for Lachi's bite-sized cheesecakes.

To keep in line with the theme, these delectable confectioneries were carefully laid on Natalie’s mother's antique vanity table and bedside tables along with a quaint cupboard refurbished by Casa Soriano.

‘Game of Thrones’ theme

Natalie has always believed in her friend, Khim Cruz of Party Deco, for her ability to put to realization what the Wees have envisioned for their kids’ parties.

For the ‘Game of Thrones’ stage décor, Party Deco built a castle with a utilitarian design in soft pink shades and a smoke-breathing dragon perched on top. “Very much GOT for a baby girl!”, enthuses Natalie.

The sigil of every house of ‘Game of Thrones’ was also creatively incorporated in the party stations like the “House of Stark” for Aling Foping’s Halo-Halo Station; “House of Tyrell” for Pizza Pedrico; and “House of Baratheon” for Waffle Time.

Banners in the ceiling works and acrylic cut-outs for the table centerpieces also had the same design as the sigil and their catchphrases.

Emily Lim-Cimafranca did an exquisite 5-tiered birthday cake decorated with the elements of GOT. The first layer was artistically wrapped in golden dragon scale; a 3D dragon representing Khaleesi's dragons in another layer; the emblem in the top layer; and the iron throne for the topper.

Entertaining the guests through songs and dances were Qaleesi’s older siblings, Ogin and Pepito, with their cousins Chloe, Chelsea and David. On the other hand, the kids' dance instructor, Mervin Roble, and his group Rhythmic Illusions choreographed an action-packed sword fight/dance to the GOT theme song.

Party giveaways included personalized pillows for the infants as well as personalized boxes with treats, crafted by Gruppo Grafica, for the toddlers and teens.

We share Qaleesi’s amazing party photos courtesy of Richard Padillo.

"A ‘boo’-tiful 8 years”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 8, 2014

Superheroes, Disney characters, spooky creatures….I can still vividly remember my first ever article for “Mom-About-Town” in 2006 entitled “The Village” featuring kids in Halloween costumes doing their “trick or treat”.

Back then, the experience of capturing the happy and excited faces of the children was such a thrill. And, to finally see my hard work on print, was pure bliss!

I had no inkling then if I would be writing for Sun.Star Davao for a year; maybe two? Never did I imagine that 8 years after, I would still be here to celebrate yet another anniversary.

“Skinfatuated with VMV”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 22, 2014

Growing up with sensitive skin, there was only one local brand that helped me survive my teenage years—VMV Hypoallergenics. Now, as a mom, I still continue to use various VMV products to look my best.

From a brand that one would find only in the Philippines’ department stores, VMV has emerged to be a successful world-class brand in the US, with its flagship VMV Skin-Specialist Boutique in SOHO, New York; Italy, Sweden, Norway, Mexico, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Spain, Japan, Singapore and Costa Rica (soon), both through e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar stores.

VMV is also close to my heart because a dear childhood friend/former neighbor of mine, Anna Marie Tancongco-Anastacio, is VMV’s awe-inspiring Chief Business Development Officer. Yes, we have a Davao connection at VMV!

Let’s get to know the dynamic Anna--business executive; president of the Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Phils., Inc.; wife to Warren and doting mom extraordinaire to Gian and Diego in this interview:

*How did the Tancongco family end up in Davao?

Our family is really from Cagayan de Oro. However, my dad worked for Del Monte, the manufacturer and marketer of processed food, as an operations head for the Mindanao plantations. Del Monte’s Mindanao office was based in Davao City. So, our family had to move to Davao City.

*How many years did you live in Davao? What was your childhood like?

I lived in Davao from 1982 until 1990, from 3rd grade until 4th year high school. About 8 years of my formative growth was spent in Davao. I had great memories growing up in Davao, among the best years of my life! At first, I didn’t know anyone at all, but I quickly gained awesome friends in our village such as you, the children of my dad’s colleagues in Del Monte who were Americans, Puerto Ricans, Spanish and Costa Ricans, and my schoolmates. I attended grade school in Stella Maris Academy, then went to high school in Ateneo de Davao. I was very blessed with a lot of friends, many of whom I still keep in touch through Facebook.

*What do you miss about life in Davao?

The food! I love durian, mangosteen and pomelo... So every time I go to Davao, I gorge on these fruits and bring crates back to Manila. And even when I buy fruits in Manila, I try to look for Del Monte or Dizon Farms produce... And, of course, my friends. Although some of them are already based in different places around the globe, some are still based in Davao.

*How did you end up working for the beauty industry?

Since companies usually start looking for prospects in colleges even before the students graduate, I immediately had three offers for work even before I graduated from Ateneo de Manila University. Two were banks and one was a cosmetic distribution company.

Among these three, it was actually the cosmetic distribution company that had the lowest offer - even lower than the monthly allowance my father would provide me when I was in school! However, I realized early on that I would rather work for an industry I know I will enjoy working in because then it wouldn’t feel like work, and the company had a portfolio that would be great on my resume. The company was part of a group of companies that distributed Estee Lauder, Clinique, Yves Rocher, Orlane, Burberry and other fragrances; Max Factor, Neutrogena and more.

Later on, I would get a call from VMV Hypoallergenics, inviting me to join them. Then I became a managing partner... And, the rest, as they say, is history.

*Can you give us a short background of VMV?

VMV was founded in 1979 by a research-oriented, well-published dermatologist-dermatopathologist.  With all 76 allergens omitted from our formulations — and with the first and still the only validated hypoallergenic rating system — there's no safer brand out there.

We’re thoroughly skinfatuated: besides loving every minute of what we do, our products are unabashedly skin love: validated hypoallergenic (sans all known cosmetic allergens); 100% all-types-of-fragrance-free; 100% phthalate, dye, paraben + preservative-free; and non-comedogenic.

We’re proud skintellectuals: we really know what we’re doing; so hypoallergenic, we’re part of the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s reference database; so medically
impressive, our studies appear in (and are even awarded by) peer-reviewed medical journals and conventions.

*What makes VMV different from other cosmetic brands?

Its key proposition is really being the safest, most proven effective care on the planet.

The safety comes from its proven hypoallergenicity. I know “hypoallergenic” as a claim has been thrown around a lot lately, but our definition is quite unique in that it is objective and has been validated.

What we did is to use the allergen lists published by two most respected dermatological groups, American Contact Dermatitis Society and the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies - and we exclude these allergens from our formulations.

The proven efficacy comes from our obsession with testing — at the highest standard. We patch test every ingredient, finished product and accessories such as brushes and puffs to ensure their hypoallergenicity.

Lastly, we’d like to say that we care for you, from our diapers to our dermabrasion. We’re skinvolved; we’re in this with our customers for the long haul. We have products for babies, for sun and light protection, shaving, body and bath, for different skin concerns such as acne, anti-aging, lightening, and even a laundry shampoo for those who are allergic to regular laundry detergents!

*In recent years, VMV has expanded its market globally, what was your personal experience like pushing a Filipino brand to other countries?

At first, it was quite tough. The Philippines is not really known for skin care or cosmetics. It is more known for things like furniture, or for its skilled workers. We didn’t let that deter us. We were clear on our positioning as a brand: that we are a validated hypoallergenic brand and its science is evidence-based.

We let the brand’s strengths speak for itself instead of focusing on the origin. Many Filipinos were telling us “why don’t you target the Filipino communities abroad first?”. We knew we had a great brand story to tell and solid science-based products to showcase. So we decided not to limit ourselves to a specific community only. We went in the mainstream, accessible premium category in every market we entered. And when the consumers find out that we are actually from the Philippines (the packaging also says that we are “Made in the Philippines”), it becomes a pleasant surprise!

What also worked for us is the trend on organics and naturals. The driving force behind the organics and naturals trend is really the consumers’ desire to have ‘safe’ products for them to use.

Truth is, not all organic and natural are actually safe - peanuts and lanolin can be organic and natural but highly allergenic. Strawberries can be organic and natural, but some people are very allergic to it. So, VMV’s hypoallergenic angle fits very well into that market need, not only delivering safe but also effective products.

*If I were a busy mom and could only have time to do my make-up for 5 minutes, what VMV products do you recommend?

For on-the-go make-up, I suggest our Skintelligent BBBB (BB But Better) Skintangible SPF 30 as a starter. It evens out skin tone, gives you that fresh, dewy, natural look. At the same time, it gives you SPF 30 to protect your skin against damaging effects from sun and light exposure.

Then, apply a dash of Skintelligent Beauty Skin Bloom Blush to give cheeks definition and radiance. We also have dye-free options for those with extra-sensitive skin.

A mascara is a must! It enhances your eyes and it can make a difference to your whole face. VMV’s Ooh-La-Lash! Volumizing Mascara forms tubes around each lash. It is non-smearing so it won’t give you the “racoon eyes” at the end of the day. It is also easy to wipe off with VMV’s make-up remover or with warm water, with just few splashes, the tubes slip right off.

Then of course, a lip color. VMV’s Skintelligent Lipstick range offers different textures of lipsticks - from Subtle Shine for that elegant basic look, to Velvet Matte for that full coverage, full bodied, dramatic velvet finish, to Glitz for that glimmer glam look - and in colors available both in dye and dye-free shades.

*I’ve heard so many good things about your Grandma Minnie line. What makes it such a hit with moms and kids?

Our Grandma Minnie would be our gentlest skin care line. All of the Grandma Minnie products contain an effective coconut-derived, anti-bacterial ingredient called monolaurin. Monolaurin is also anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-protozoal. Together with monolaurin, all our Grandma Minnie products also contain USDA certified, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil. So, you get all the goodness of VCO as well.

The most popular product in that line is ‘The Big, Brave, Boo-Boo Balm’. I always carry around and travel with one. It is the best ‘emergency’ buddy you can have. Got insect bites? Boo-Boo Balm soothes away itchiness while monoloaurin will also subside the inflammation. Got scrapes and shallow cuts? Boo-Boo Balm’s anti-bacterial properties will stop it from getting infected and facilitate faster healing. Got chapped lips? Apply Boo-Boo Balm’s moisturizing properties can help. Got joggers’ nipple chafing and bleeding? A common injury suffered by runners which has soreness and, in extreme cases, even cracked and bleeding nipples. We recommend the use of Boo-Boo Balm before and after a run. I have heard so many other cases where Boo-Boo Balm was so useful for our customers, even in loosening skin when stuck during use of superglue!

*Lastly, what are the must-have products of VMV for the family?

It’s difficult to only choose a few products to recommend as our products tend to have different purposes for each of the member of the family. But for basics, I would recommend the following at the very least:

ARMADA FACE COVER 30, 45 OR 60: A daily use of sunscreen by everyone in the family is a must. Skin cancer, even among Filipinos, is on the rise. Most people think that they only need protection from the sun. Recent studies have shown that immunosuppression and skin cancer can also be triggered by constant exposure to indoor lights that emit UVA, infrared and visible light.

ARMADA SPORT 70: For outdoor activities such as sports or family vacations. American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) strongly recommends that sunscreen be reapplied every two hours at least.

BOO-BOO BALM: A basic emergency buddy for any “boo-boos”.

ESSENCE ANTI-BACTERIAL HAND GEL:Viruses are easily passed around from the things we touch. Schools can be a great haven of viruses as children interact with sick teachers or classmates. So I always make sure that all (and I am not kidding) of my family members have their own Essence Hand Gel so they can easily sanitize anytime, anywhere.

***********

In Davao, VMV products can be found at Ayala Abreeza Mall, Chimes and SM Department Stores.

The company will have a VMV Skin-Specialist Boutique in January 2015 in the soon-to-be-opened Centrale Mall, offering their products and facial services.

VMV can also be accessed through their online stores: vmvhypoallergenics.com for markets outsides the Philippines, and vmvhypoallergenics.ph for the Philippines.

“Sheikh Shack sarap!”
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 6, 2014

Succulent beef brisket slowly braised in its secret house stock, meticulously diced into cubes and pan seared to perfection. Then, the heavenly beef is generously wrapped in tortilla bread with fresh and crisp vegetables and drizzled with a specially-concocted garlic sauce. Put them all together and what do you have? Sheikh Shack sarap!

The delicious idea of Sheikh Shack was born in early July this year. One of the partners, Engr. Jerome Go, broached the idea of opening a shawarma stall to his group of friends. So, they enlisted the help of Chef Caitlin Yao to make the menu.

Chef Caitlin has worked for Café Firenzo and Dimsum Diner prior to opening the Shack. She also runs her own small food business, Not an Ordinary Meal (NOM).

When the partners were throwing names around, partner Eng. Paeng Rodriguez suggested the name Sheikh Shack. The play on words was inspired partly by the popular burger franchise Shake Shack and the word sheikh, an Arabic honorific used for royalty.

A month later, Sheikh Shack successfully debuted at the DAVCON Kadayawan Bazaar where they were sold out every single night. Seeing the potential the Shack had to offer, these friends, 12 guys and a girl, decided to open its first branch.

“We can best describe the food at the Shack as an elevated food stall. We were inspired by the concept of food trucks and awesome quality of food for affordable prices”, shares Chef Caitlin.

“Our bestseller is our beef shawarma wrap and rice. Our one-of-a-kind garlic sauce is what we believe to be our specialty. We can’t tell you what’s in it, but we can promise you that once you try it you’ll never be satisfied with any other garlic sauce out there”, the young chef guarantees.

Sheikh Shack is a favorite hang-out of a lot of families and kids who come in after school for snacks. “They usually order the beef shawarma rice with egg”, says Chef Caitlin.

“We think that the Shack offers something familiar but better. It is comfort food that we’ve managed to do really well and we at the Shack feel that our products won’t be a fad but rather a staple. It’s something that you look for when you’re on the go or in the mood to give yourself a treat”, enthuses Chef Caitlin.

Sheikh Shack’s first branch just celebrated its one-month anniversary recently. And, when asked what is the experience like doing business with friends, Earl Ang and Chef Caitlin Yao who are both managing partners and cousins, have this to say, “Running a business with friends is not easy but it is most definitely fun. The multitude of ideas and personalities are what make Sheikh Shack. The most important thing is that we all respect each other’s ideas and decisions. This common feeling of respect makes the Shack run smoothly”.

For budding young entrepreneurs, Earl and Chef Caitlin have this sound advice, “Go out there and take the risk, it’s scary and tiring at first but nothing beats the feeling of owning something that’s your own.”

Sheikh Shack is located at Corner Palma Gil St., Bo. Obrero, Davao City (along Starr, Bricklane Compound and the Brewery). They are open from 10am to 10pm, Mondays through Saturdays. Call telephone number 3004692 for pick-up orders. Sheikh Shack’s second branchwill be opening soon at the basement of Gaisano Mall of Davao (near Handyman), from 10am-9pm Mondays through Sundays.

Follow them on Facebook via Sheikh Shack Shawarma and at Instagram@SheikhShackShawarma.

“Christmas must-haves at Chimes”
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 20, 2014

“What to give? What to wear? Where to buy?” Without a doubt, these are the frequently-asked questions this holiday rush.

It’s 5 days before Christmas but don’t you fret as Chimes Specialty Store’s two leading brands rise up to the demands of the Yuletide season with their exquisite style and beauty.

Be the dressiest damsel of the party with Plains and Prints’ 2014 Holiday Collection!

Rhett Eala, designer and creative director of Plains and Prints, shares that the brand’s holiday collection plays up on the Modern Metropolis theme featuring 20 unique, trendy dresses inspired by the different cities around the world.

“I think one of the things many people dream of is to experience what it’s like to spend the holidays abroad. With the collection, we’re sort of letting them do that through famous cities such as Milan, Shanghai and London,” says Eala.

Another fascinating aspect of this collection is the mishmash of materials to create unique pieces with interesting cuts, silhouettes, colors and prints.

“We also wanted to reflect global fashion, and that’s going towards the edgy side. However, we still wanted to retain the classy, timeless vibe we are known for. So, we incorporated that by using a combination of many different fabrics in classic silhouettes”, explains Eala.

Other exciting themes for the holiday collection include the East Meets West which is inspired by the merging cultures of east and west in varying shades of red and fuchsia with warm tones of peach and gray combining chic and elegance in flattering silhouettes; and the Heaven and Earth Collection which is influenced by the vibrant colors of the sky with complementing touches of earth color tones.

And, what better way to showcase and wear the Plains and Prints’ Holiday Collection than our best dolled-up faces using the skin-caring and proudly Filipino makeup brand, Happy Skin.

Last month, I was on fan girl mode when I personally met awe-inspiring model, columnist and Happy Skin co-founder Rissa Mananquil-Trillo during the launch of their latest beauty products in an intimate affair aptly dubbed as “Save Room for Dessert” at Chimes.

Joining Rissa was Happy Skin’s resident make-up artist Sophie Uy who skillfully showed guests how to apply make up in a jiffy with vavavoom results.

In time for their first anniversary celebration, Happy Skin introduced their hot new must-try products:

HAPPY SKIN SHUT UP & KISS ME LIP & CHEEK MOUSSE (P699 each) is a “dual-action lip-cheek wand that colors your puckers with velvety richness and lends cheeks a lasting, happy flush” in three shades: “yuletide-red “Mistletoe Kiss”, a bold must for festively feisty chicks; “Swept Off My Feet”, a sweet but punchy pink; and “Warm and Toasty”, a friendly taupe that’ll keep your nude pucker appropriate but warmly approachable”.

HAPPY SKIN ALL EYES ON HUE EYESHADOW PALETTE (P1,299)  is set to bring on the happy from day to night with a carefully curated palette of very useful colors such as Oatmeal, Biscuit, Hazelnut and Espresso. “For Happy Skin’s first ever eyeshadow palette, we made sure to feature four ultra wearable shades that complement each other and that also flatter every skin tone!”, shares Rissa.

HAPPY SKIN EYE NEED A MIRACLE CORRECTOR (P799)proves that “you can fake happy ‘til you feel it. This potent product claims that it can powerfully tackle fatigue under the eyes, extremely dark circles, scars, veins, bruises, and even tattoos and birthmarks!”

Still clueless on what to give the nicest people on your Christmas list? They would absolutely squeal in delight once they receive these adorably packaged Happy Skin treats from the Save Room for Dessert Holiday Collection 2014.

“A fresh start with Humabi”
Sun.Star Davao, Jan. 3, 2014

In welcoming the new year, Dr. Richard Mata and wife Erika Soriano-Mata greeted their Facebook friends with a stunning family photo and one of their favorite verses from Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”.

Aside from being an in-demand pediatrician, Dr. Richard has saved many lives through his top dengue website, www.solving-dengue-fever.com and made doctors’ prescriptions more patient-friendly through his innovative website, www.easyclinicsoftware.com.

On the other hand, Erika, a hands-on mom to three charming children, Patricia, Amanda and Richardo, has used her passion for fashion in making people feel better about themselves through her numerous speaking engagements which celebrate her audience’s God-given beauty inside and out.

Last December, this much-admired family who has been an ardent supporter of the Philippine Science High School’s scholarship program launched their own line of bags to further support the cause.

Know more about the Matas’ must-have accessory and why it’s making waves with bag lovers in this interview with Erika.

*How did you start supporting the scholars of Philippine Science High School?

About two years ago, our good friend, Dr. Charina Dioso, who was the head of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of Philippine Science High School, asked us if we can support some students who are really gifted but are just simply less fortunate when it comes to finances. We responded affirmatively on the level that we can afford.

We saw that helping dedicated students is a good investment because we know it won’t go into waste. These are serious students and some of them can become great leaders of this nation thus our help can multiply as we may help produce brilliant citizens who can touch more people.

*What made you think about creating bags for the scholarship fund?

Richard and I are believers of education.  We believe that anybody can get out of poverty if they will invest first in educating themselves.  We wished to continue and help more students in PhilSci.  That’s when the idea of having a business that can help these students came in.

We are inspired by the business model of the popular shoes, Tom’s; that every time you buy a pair of shoes, Tom’s will be giving another pair for free to the poor children of Africa.

I am a lover of fashion by nature. I love bags too and very meticulous of the design and the linings, the zippers, the color, etc.  So the idea came. And, we do believe it’s divine.

What if we can sell bags of my design for this purpose?  I will enjoy it at the same time!  So we searched for sources of locally made bags but somehow wasn’t successful at the start.  But we continued our search and finally I found myself inside the Women’s Correctional Institution.

Not that I did something illegal, but I found that I can have my designs produced there by expert tie box bag weavers.  These weavers were also happy because it will really help them in their livelihood program.  Talking with them and learning their stories on why they were there is truly heartbreaking.  Most of them are mothers with students who also needed support.

* Who will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds from Humabi?

For every purchase of a Humabi, bag lovers will be helping two groups of people: the bag weavers of the correctional institution and some chosen scholars at the Philippine Science High school.

*Why did you choose the name Humabi as your bag’s brand?

At first I thought of another name. It was supposed to be “Sisidlan”, one of the Tagalog terms for bags but when we did an Internet search, “Sisidlan” already existed so we need to think of another name. It took some time and then Richard said, “What’s the Tagalog term for weave?”  We searched our brains first but nothing really came out, so we shifted our search to Google and there it was: “Humabi”.  We looked at each other and then a light bulb appeared!  We searched for Humabi bags in the net but there was none.  We went to DTI and they said it was available and so we registered it as the official name for our brand of bags!  Thank God!

*How did you come up with the designs with your daughters?

I have 2 daughters: Patricia, 13 years old and Amanda, 9 years old.  When we discuss about designs, they usually pull out their old favorite bags and we start from there and just innovate some more.

*What were the challenges you encountered while planning for the Humabi brand?

Well there are many challenges but I love all of it.  Mostly it’s in the availability of my stocks as I am just starting out.  Just like when I launched it on my Instagram and Facebook accounts and showed my gorgeous ambassadors, I received orders immediately and even had one person order 30 pieces for her company’s Christmas give-aways! I did not expect that to happen immediately but somehow I was able to comply.

*What makes your tie box bags different from the other previously produced tie box bags in the market?

Well there are many ways Humabi is different.  To start with, it is my design.

I first asked myself, “Will I be proud to carry this kind of bag design if I go to a mall or a party?”, if my answer is yes, then I do believe it will work also for my friends and the rest of the women out there.

The quality of each bag passes through me.  Each lining is properly examined.  They know I’m very meticulous so the quality is very high or else I will bring it back to them.  I also provided a dust bag with the Humabi logo which added some elegance in the packaging.

Aside from the design and quality, what made it also different is that we placed a lot of effort in building some class to the Humabi brand with the help of our brand ambassadors who are respected mompreneurs of the city like Marga Montermayor-Nograles, Mimi Vergara-Tupas, Kaye Gempesaw and Bianca Baretto-Uy.  We also have a surprise line-up of Celebrity Ambassadors from Manila which I will soon reveal.  We also have released our website www.Humabi-bags.com to receive orders nationwide and internationally.

We believe Humabi tie box bags have a wide market because they are unique, attractive, strong and affordable. It also has a good story that will entice people to buy as they know they will also be helping.  We were also able to tie-up with great stores such as Soul in Abreeza and Martish beside Villa Margarita Hotel.  In other words, Humabi bags are packaged and promoted to be world-class.

* How many colors are available and what are the different names of the designs? Can you please explain their respective features?

FAITH BAG: It’s a square-shaped handbag with wave stitch design.

HOPE BAGS: It’s a rectangular-shaped handbag with a corn stitch design.

LOVE SHOULDER/SUMMER BAGS: It’s a tote bag with a bigger size fit for outings.

KINDNESS SLING BAGS: It has a peacock stitch design perfect for teens.

PEACE KIDS BACK-PACKS:  Circular in shape with either butterflies or flowers as accent.  Fit for little princesses.

All of the above comes in 10 different colors--black, brown, red, white, blue, orange, yellow, green, pink and purple.

*So far, how is the response of people to Humabi?

All I got are always praises for the bags!  Usually when the package comes to their homes, they get surprised the moment they see it.  It starts from the dust bag which women really love and when they open it, they can’t believe that it was all made out of tie box twines.

They admire the craftsmanship and the dedication given to it by the weavers.  I also realized that people really have a helping heart. Knowing that they are helping both the women in the correctional and worthy students of PhilSci gives them great joy that they supported Humabi!

* What are you future plans for Humabi?

We are all excited.  The future is really online.  My husband is my partner and actually my IT guy.  He immediately made the website for me all by himself without the need of me hiring a website developer.

From there, we will link an ad about my website, so his thousands of readers can easily see my link and perhaps become resellers of our unique colorful bags.  We believe there’s a niche for these kinds of bags even in the first world countries especially if they will know it’s for a good cause. I am also going to introduce another design by January and Facebook and Instagram are of big help.

But more than anything, the future that we are looking forward to is actually to see the weavers with their children still able to finish schooling even if they are still serving their sentences and also see our Humabi scholars in PhilSci to walk on stage with flying colors during their graduation ceremony.

“Dani’s wonderful world of Winx”
Sun.Star Davao, Jan. 17, 2015

Her big smile warms my heart. She shouts my name and waves her hand ever so gleefully that you would think we haven’t seen each other for ages.     This is how Danielle Christy Guiani Fuentes or Dani affectionately greets me every time I see her in school.

Dani is my good friend Toni’s bright and cheerful Grade 1 daughter who recently held her 7th birthday at Lispher Inn.

We wanted a simple and intimate party to celebrate with family and friends; thanking the Lord for the six wonderful years of Dani’s life”, says Toni, a breastfeeding advocate and owner of Nappy Hub Cloth Diaper Online Shop.

Together with Dani’s Daddy Troy and younger brother Wedi, Mommy Toni made their only girl’s birthday extra special by showcasing the well-loved Winx Club theme.

"Dani just loves Winx. They are her favorite fairy characters and our family also loves how the fairies are good-natured and courageous who defend the helpless. We hope that Dani will also possess and grow up with these endearing qualities”, says Toni.

Planning for the party was quite a breeze, thanks to Toni’s ever reliable fellow ‘Peas in a Pod’ moms Marie Lo and Ena Marie Tai of Creations Party Depot who imaginatively highlighted the Winx Club fairies Bloom and her five best friends, Stella, Musa, Tecna, Flora and Aisha at Lispher.

Donning her dainty pink-colored tutu and vibrant wings which magically moves and plays music with just the clap of the hands, Dani was giddy with excitement seeing the party venue filled with her ultimate faves.

While the guests waited for the party to start, kids immersed themselves in arts and crafts activities themed with Winx Club fairies.

Dani delighted the guests with her heart-warming rendition of “Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart” which also served as her celebration’s opening prayer.

Dynamic party host Kring Kring Recla led the little ones in playing enjoyable parlor games while the parents busied themselves going around the food carts which were serving popcorn and French fries.

As Dani blew the candles of her birthday cake fabulously made by Cupcake Couture, she was beaming with happiness; grateful to God and her “fairy” friends for the memorable birthday party filled with much love and fun.

‘The Cat in the Hat’ party blast
Sun.Star Davao, Jan. 31, 2015

Who doesn’t love the witty and adventure-filled children’s book, “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss? It was one of the first iconic books we read as a child.

The rambunctious six-foot tall cat in a red and white-striped hat with a red bow tie suddenly appears at Sally and her brother’s house one rainy day, creating wonder and amazement, and yes, lots of chaos, too.

It is indeed heartwarming to know that the well-loved “The Cat in the Hat” book continues to charm its little readers to this day. Five-year old Aly, eldest daughter of entrepreneurs Andrew James and Mabel Yuzon, is one such fan. Reading the zany book to her younger brother Alessandro Luis or Alessi is a daily activity they immensely enjoy together.

Thus, when it was time to decide on a theme for Alessi’s first birthday, there was no head scratching as to who the party’s main character would be. It just had to be “The Cat in the Hat”, no doubt about it!

Managing their various businesses Alchemy Outsourcing, Sushi Dito Restaurant, Hybrid and Echelon and planning for Alessi’s birthday party blast was a juggling act for Mabel.

Good thing that Creations Party Depot’s Marie Lo and Ena Tai came to the rescue and made the party preps a manageable and pleasant experience for the busy mom.

Held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel’s ballroom, Alessi’s 1st birthday party was a tribute to Dr. Seuss’ endearing book from its predominantly blue and red colored decorations, ceiling works and table centerpieces. The backdrop showcased the book’s characters the Cat, Sally, the brother, Fish, Thing One and Thing Two.

“As parents, we also love Dr. Seuss’ quotes! They are important lessons our children can live by”, shares Mommy Mabel. So, Creations Party Depot made sure to highlight these quotable quotes in the table setting.

Alessi’s three-tiered and brightly-hued birthday cake featuring Thing One, Thing Two, the fish in the bowl and the Lorax trees was marvelously created by All of Us Cakes. “The cake just doesn’t look good but tastes great as well”, says Mabel.

Dressed as “The Cat in the Hat”, the party host organized classic party games that kids, moms and dads enjoyed. “We wanted our guests to take part in familiar games but added a few twists involving parents and guardians”, quips the hands-on mom.

And, just like the Cat’s tricks where he balances the fish on the tip of his umbrella; and several household items, among the highlights of Alessi’s birthday celebration was the thrilling performance of acrobats who did balancing stunts that left the audience at the edge of their seats.

“The family of acrobats composed of a dad, mom and their three kids, the youngest being 4 years old, was handpicked by us because we want the kiddie guests to learn that anything is possible as long as they keep trying. And, they must not forget to have fun while doing challenges!”, enthuses Mabel.

“Look at me! Look at me! Look at me NOW! It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how.”--Dr. Seuss (“The Cat in the Hat”)

“We are home”
Sun.Star Davao, Feb. 14, 2015

It was a spectacular night for the Davao Christian High School (DCHS) Batch 1990 as they successfully hosted the DCHS Alumni Homecoming on their 25th anniversary last February 7, 2015 at the DCHS Auditorium.

Dubbed as “We are Home”, the batch dedicated the event to their beloved mentors who devotedly nurtured them throughout their stay in the institution. Heart-warming messages and tributes from the batch and from former teachers were some of the event highlights which served as inspiration to the younger generation of the school.

Indeed, it was a captivating evening for the 1,400 attendees of the homecoming’s mini-concert as celebrity guests, singer and ‘80s heartthrob Mr. Raymond Lauchengco, Michael Diamse (a.k.a. Daniel Padilla ng Davao), and host-comedienne Ms. Giselle Sanchez serenaded the guests with songs befitting this month of hearts.

There was never a dull moment with zany host Giselle as she delivered her punch lines one after the other, eliciting boisterous laughter and big smiles from the audience.

During the event, DCHS Batch 1999 launched the limited edition DCHS Swatch Watch with special guest and fellow DCHS alumnus Marco Ho a.k.a. Bogart the Explorer from Davao City. The winning design for the personalized DCHS Swatch was created by Architect/Pastor Samuel Lim.

Drawing the raffle prize winners left a few breathless as they eagerly awaited the results. Prizes ranged from home appliances, gadgets, mountain bike to a Ford EcoSport as the grand prize.

Through their hard work, cooperation and support from generous friends and sponsors, the DCHS Batch 1990 turned over their check donation to the DCHS Board of Trustees for one new classroom at the DCHS C.P. Garcia Campus along Diversion Road. The 5.7-hectare DCHS campus (Phase 1) is set to open on June 2015 offering preschool to Grade 5 on its first year of operation.

A silver year passed, another silver year to look forward to. The succeeding DCHS Batch 1991 alumni will surely have big shoes to fill when they host their homecoming.

Special thanks to Susan Huang-Tan, Ryan Gaw, Lilie Herrera-Gaw, Marga Bulao and Mark Kong for the interview and photos.

“4 decades of DATA
Sun.Star Davao, Feb. 28, 2015

Back in the mid-90s to early 2000, I had the privilege of expressing my deep love for Davao through my work at the Davao City Tourism Office.

I was in my early 20s then, passionate and eager to do my personal share in promoting Davao to the Philippines and the world.  One of the best times I’ve definitely had during this ‘season’ in my life was the unforgettable chance to collaborate with the private sector, particularly, the vibrant Davao Tourism Association (DATA).

DATA recently celebrated its 40th or Ruby Year Anniversary at The Marco Polo Grand Ballroom.

Looking at the program’s list of past presidents, I felt honored to have worked with the likes of industry leaders Mary Ann ‘Baby’ Montemayor, Margarita ‘Margie’ Moran-Floirendo, George Walter Misa, and Art Boncato through my involvement with DATA as well as Women in Travel, SKAL Davao, among others.

Art Boncato, who now serves as the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Tourism, shares the story of how DATA came to be. “In the 70s, Davao tourism private sector leaders organized DATA with four gentlemen taking the cudgels of nurturing an infant organization”, says Asec. Art.

DATA’s first president was travel trade player Ricardo Acuña followed by historian and restaurateur Rogelio Lizada, Philippine Airlines executive Napoleon Doctor, and hotelier Ding Diaz.

“With their pioneering vision for tourism, DATA has counted years of strengthening the tourism industry in the city. DATA’s landmark projects and achievements include the hosting of an annual cultural gathering in the 70s that is considered the mother of the Apo Duwaling Festival (Mt. Apo, durian, waling-waling) and now the successful Kadayawan Festival; several prestigious Kalakbay Awards for Best Association from the Department of Tourism (DOT); and Hall of Fame Award for Best Pavilion from the DOT and Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) at the Philippine Travel Mart (PTM)”, says Asec. Art.

He continues that the “game-changing Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF); the trailblazing Php 7 million GATT Tourism Skills Training Program; Balik Davao blitzes in the US; the first of its kind eco-adventure travel trade show dubbed as 90s ‘Go! Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo’; recent MICE bids on MICE Conference 2013 (won); Philippine Advertising Congress (won but the event was cancelled); APEC 2015 (shortlisted), among others” were also among the many contributions of DATA to the tourism industry.

As DATA’s momentous Ruby Year was held on Chinese New Year, guests as well as past and present officers were encouraged to wear the auspicious color red.

The indefatigable Baby Montemayor, Chairman of the 4 Decades of DATA Steering Committee, eloquently delivered the welcome remarks. She highlighted the importance of DATA’s role in steering the Davao tourism industry to what it is today. “And, now the city is reaping the benefits”, she enthused.

After dinner, city, regional and national tourism updates were given respectively by the Davao City Tourism Operations Officer Lisette Marques; Department of Tourism Region XI director Robby Alabado; and DOT Assistant Secretary Art Boncato.

In addition, art pieces from Davao artist Vic Secuya’s Cross Series were presented to 16 (4 of which were posthumous) past DATA presidents, namely: Ricardo Acuña, Rogelio Lizada, Napoleon Doctor, Ding Diaz, Mariano Pamintuan, Claude Le Neindre, George Walter Misa, Efren Veneracion, Joji Ilagan Bian, Rudolf Lopez, Mary Ann Montemayor, Margarita Floirendo, George Walter Misa, Arturo Boncato (who was DATA president twice), Paul Borromeo, Angel Puentespina, Gene Bangayan and current president Salome San Jose.

Event sponsor Marco Polo Davao’s Francis Ledesma and DATA logo creator Lou Almendras were likewise honored with Secuya’s exquisite artwork.

Kudos to the 4 Decades of DATA Steering Committee, chair Baby Montemayor, co-chair Gene Bangayan, program head Paul Borromeo, solicitations/finance head Alexander Divinagracia, food and physical arrangement head Baby Montemayor and Lena Benedicto, awards/AVP head DOT through the Office of Asec. Art Boncato and secretariat Konkordans, Inc., for a well-attended and fun affair!

I shall forever be grateful to my loving mommy mentors during my tourism days, especially Tita Baby Montemayor, Ninang Gene Bangayan and former DOT Region XI director Kiling Dakudao, who have inspired me to work with grace even under pressure. It was truly wonderful to reconnect with the other DATA officers who I haven’t seen in years during their recent Ruby Anniversary!

My sincerest thanks to Paul Borromeo for the event photos.

“Musikgarten Manila opens in Davao”
Sun.Star Davao, March 14, 2015

Musikgarten, under its local brand name, Musikgarten Manila, recently launched its first branch in Mindanao and the sixth in the country.

Located at the 2nd level of the SM Lanang Premiere-Davao, Musikgarten is a leading early childhood development program which started in the U.S. It is touted to be the preferred music program of its kind in over 20 countries.

Michelle Nikki Junia, a music scholar and cum laude graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas Conservatory of Music, was the one who brought Musikgarten to the Philippines. She was trained in the U.S. on music-based child education.

Junia, who is the the director and owner of Musikgarten Manila, is also the only Filipino trained by Seth Riggs, the world-renowned vocal coach to iconic artists like Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Natalie Cole and Kelly Clarkson.

“Musikgarten Manila is a music school that has a unique, non-traditional approach to learning music for all ages. It aims to make music an anchor in child development and the bonding of the family”, explains Junia.

She says that Musikgarten offers “a comprehensive program that spans the first six years of a child’s musical and brain development. The music program was designed by experts and specialists on neuroscience, child psychology, and music therapy, early childhood educators and pediatricians”.

Junia believes that Musikgarten’s advantage is its teaching force. “I personally train them on the Musikgarten program and on handling individual lessons in terms of technique,” she notes.

Musikgarten Manila prides itself in using educational tools and toys that are child-safe and environmentally friendly. It is also the exclusive distributor of music-based educational instruments.

The Lanang branch will offer regular group classes for infants to 5 years old, music-based learning programs for groups and individuals, a musical playhouse, and a band rehearsal studio with recording facilities.

For more information, call 0998-539-1958 or check out musicgartenmla on FB, Twitter and Instagram. You may also visit Musikgarten Manila at the 2nd Level beside SM Bowling Center at SM Lanang Premier.

“Summer must-dos”
Sun.Star Davao, March 28, 2015

This year will definitely be a summer like no other for our family.

For the first time, my 13-year old daughter will be away from us for a two-month study tour overseas. Although we will surely miss her, I know that this trip will be a significant learning experience for her, just like when I joined a similar program when I was 14.

Summer is not just about chillaxin’ and lazing around. It’s also supposed to be a time for growing beyond classroom walls, acquiring new skills and making friends outside your usual circle.

This is the 8th year that I have been compiling the Kiddie Summer Workshops of Davao City. I hope you will have a blast checking out these summer must-dos for your kiddos!

Happy summer!

“Explore the world with JAT Air”
Sun.Star Davao, April 11, 2015

A world full of color, beauty and wonder via ‘JAT Airlines’ was what guests experienced during Joseph Adrian Tangtatco’s (JAT) travel-themed 1st birthday party at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.

"Due to our busy schedules, travelling is a way for us to unwind and give undivided to our children, in the process, strengthening our bond as a family”, share the birthday boy’s parents businessman Jet Tangtatco and dermatologist-wife Jenny Ang-Tangtatco.

As guests started to 'check-in' at the venue, they got the feel of being in an airport with signs mounted at every corner and station of the ballroom. Passengers “flew” on a big red giant plane which served as the photo booth's backdrop in 'Departing Flights'.

At the ‘Airport Lounge’, the choices were not limited to just coffee or tea but five refreshing beverages and several food kiosks. More mouth-watering desserts and sweet treats awaited guests at the ‘VIP Lounge’.

Welcoming the party ‘passengers’ were Daddy Jet and baby Joseph who looked dashing and debonair donning their pilot uniforms while Mommy Jenny and lovely daughter Jodie were elegantly beautiful in their flight attendant attires.

The Party SYster Co.’s ceiling works were quite a feast for the kids' eyes as three-dimensional red vintage planes were hung amidst warm sunset-colored skies. On the other hand, tall control towers and sleek toy planes were the centerpieces of all the guest tables.

Venture further, famous landmarks from prime destinations such as the Big Ben, Golden Gate Bridge, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal and the Statue of Liberty were showcased as the party’s backdrop.

Kids had their special seats at the front with their own themed placemats/coloring pages, crayolas, cups and airplane-juices. Every kiddie guest also got to take home their personalized luggage at the 'Baggage Claim' as party souvenirs.

Meanwhile, game booths were inspired with global themes such as Russian Roulette, Argentina Hoops and French Balloon Festival which were housed like gates at the ‘International Airport’.

To top it all off, entertainers performed magic and acrobatic stunts while some friends of Captain Joseph from all over the world danced to the tune of 'Take on the World' and 'Be Our Guest'.

A four-tiered, vintage travel-themed cake was inspired from an original piece made by Mionette Cakes from Indonesia. Altered and enhanced to draw personal touches from Joseph's parents who loved to travel around the world thereby including Taj Mahal, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Statue of Liberty and the Empire State as edible miniature toppers.

“As classic and vintage as it should appear, we made sure that the overall aura of the cake by iBake will still be as vibrant, colorful and youthful as our Joseph”, says Mommy Jenny.

On the occasion of his darling son’s 1stbirthday, the proud mom has this message, “The world may be too big to fit in a party, but when your dreams take flight, your imagination can definitely take you places”.

Indeed, explore, dream and discover at JAT Airlines!

Special thanks to Simply Gray for the party photos.

“A ‘Yummy’ family tradition”
Sun.Star Davao, April 25, 2015

For over 25 years, Yummy has never failed to meet the discriminating taste buds of Dabawenyos and their families.

Who can ever resist their Yummy Fried Chicken, considered to be the restaurant’s flagship product which is deep-fried chicken served with homemade gravy and rice; their bestselling Lasagna Bolognese with Creamy Bechamel Sauce; Breaded Pork Chop; and Chicken Barbeque with Java Rice? During our high school days, these were our must-order dishes whenever we would hang out at the original Yummy along C.M. Recto Street.

Yummy is the brainchild of Alor Lim-Despabiladeras and her siblings who all shared a passion for preparing good food and indulging people with their mouthwatering creations. Back in the 1980s, Mama Alor would wake up in the wee hours of the morning to cook. This passion eventually became the catalyst for the opening of Yummy.

Today, Yummy stands proudly along F. Torres St. It recently unveiled its new look beautifully created by no less than Ms. Annie Paz-Lim, Davao’s premier party organizer who loves to dabble in interior design on the side for choice clients and dear friends.

Annie describes the newly-renovated Yummy as “fun, modern, exciting, chic and eclectic”. Well-loved pieces from the Despabiladeras such as their old dining and garden furniture sets were tastefully integrated with other existing pieces from the restaurant. Whimsical touches include inspiring quotations about family, life and work as well as dainty tea sets.

The restaurant has a homey and inviting feel; as if you are a kid again at Mama’s table, eating meals prepared with love. Whatever mood you’re in and whoever you may be with that day, you will surely find your own little corner – a nook to share an anniversary meal with your significant other, a couch where you can spend some quality time with your little ones, a lounging area where you can sip a cup of coffee with a friend or a good book, or a long table to hold business meetings in.

Good food

Yummy (version 2.0) is now being run by Mama Alor’s children, James Despabiladeras and Diana Despabiladeras-Chua Chui Hian, who are equally passionate to carry on the family tradition of serving nothing but the best from their kitchen.

“The word yummy connotes good food. It’s the first word or expression that would come to mind after having good food, or when you are craving good food. It is the experience that we strive to give our guests every single day and it is how we want our food to be remembered”, explains Diana.

“Our grandparents, Mama Alor’s parents, ran a bakeshop (Honey Bake House) along Acacia St. in the early ‘70s until the mid ‘90s. Thus, we (James and Diana) were exposed to the food business at a very young age. The bakery served as both playground and training ground for managing a business related to food. Yummy is more than just a place to work and earn for us. It is our life, as it has been part of our lives from when we were children”, Diana continues.

Diana studied Pastry Arts in 2005 at the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM) in Manila. At that time, she was a Project Manager in Accenture, but the passion for food that she undoubtedly inherited from Mama Alor prompted her to take classes on weekends. In addition, she took private lessons on pastry art with a pastry chef in Singapore.

The mom of one details that the “food in Yummy (and Alor’s) may best be described as comfort food; food that will bring back good memories, and generate new ones. These are dishes that many Dabawenyos grew up with and will make them remember tastes from home. It is food that you turn to in order to lift your spirits when you’re feeling blue, or celebrate an important milestone in your life”.

Never compromising quality

Families who dine at Yummy – or take their food home – usually love their signature Fried Chicken, Pork Knuckles, Mama’s Pork Ribs, Oven Crisp Pork Belly and 40 Cloves Chicken. Over the years, the Despabiladeras kept their core value intact while evolving to accommodate the changes that have occurred in the food industry in Davao City.

“The one thing that we stood by since we opened our doors in 1988 is ensuring that we serve only YUMMY food. Quality is something that we never compromise. This is the core value that we live by and instill in our employees. That is one thing that will never change”, assures Diana.

“To this day, Mama Alor and I, always work together. A day at work will mean standing in our home kitchen all day, perfecting old recipes and developing new ones. We would set aside time for research and development, which for us means traveling together to try new things and bring home new inspirations and, of course, share quality mother-daughter time and make new memories”, enthuses Diana.

Mama Alor is now 64 years old, but her drive to still learn truly amazes her kids. James and Diana may now be running the business, but their Mama remains to be their guide.

"Never ever compromising the quality of our product and using only the best available ingredients are the two most important thing that we learned from Mama, and is the cornerstone of what Yummy and Alor’s is today”, assures Diana.

Innovation and growth

At the same time, Yummy continues to create, innovate and grow. Their original 1988 menu has grown over the years, and the dining experience that they provided their patrons has also evolved.

They started out as a fast food chicken and burger joint, at a time when popular fast food chains were something that could only be enjoyed through a TV commercial. They also operated a catering service, serving mainly entrees and providing service.

Presently, Yummy is a full-service restaurant where one can have the old Yummy favorites from the good old college days, entrees that in the past could only be enjoyed at events catered by Yummy, and new dishes that may be developed down the line.

“Through Alor’s catering service, we will continue to be part of special events, wherever these events may be. Our services, however, go beyond just entrees; we also have a pastry line, and can provide dessert and cocktail catering services”, Diana says.

“There is another thing that never changed in Yummy, aside from never compromising the quality of the food we serve. It is the fact that Yummy has always, and continues to be, a family affair. I may have received formal training in ISCAHM and Singapore, but the best training will always be working with Mama Alor in our home kitchen as a little girl in grade school”, Diana stresses.

The Despabiladeras are extremely grateful that Dabawenyos have embraced Yummy for generations. “Thank you for the past 25 years. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life journeys, for allowing us to share what we love and are most passionate about – good food, Yummy food – as you gather for a family lunch or celebrate an important milestone. It is what inspired us through the years, and what continues to inspire us to cook and to serve you. We hope that you will allow us to continue to play a part as you make new memories for the next 25 years – and beyond”, Diana ends with a warm smile.

Yummy is located along F. Torres St., Davao City (infront of Assumption Church) with telephone numbers 2225577 and 2225599; and mobile number 0917-623-3446. E-mail them at alors.yummy@gmail.com.

“A SEOULful Summer”
Sun.Star Davao, May 9, 2015

It has always been a running joke in the family that my husband Gary owed me another trip to South Korea.

You see, back in 2004, Gary and I went to the Land of Kimchi for almost a week, taking in the sights and indulging in the food. Eight months after our vacation, I opened the CD photo file of our trip but lo and behold, there was no trace of any of our snaps from Korea. Apparently, the files were overwritten accidentally by my dear hubby as the CD was a rewritable one. Save for four printed photos which we bought from our tour guide, these were the only memories left from that holiday.

And, so, during our trip last month to Korea, I vowed to be extra vigilant in securing our photos. Eleven years after and with much improved technology, thankfully, photo files could be shared and uploaded in real time via Google Drive, iCloud, Viber, Instagram and Facebook.

What is it with Korea that fascinates me so?

Maybe it’s because of the healthy and appetizing Korean food that I could not get tired of eating? Or is it the ubiquitous presence of Korean groceries, parlors, etc. all over the Philippines that is oh-so-familiar yet still captivating? I am not a hard core fan of Koreanovelas because of their time-consuming nature but, whenever Korea as a holiday destination is suggested, I would definitely say “yes” to the invitation in a heartbeat. Whether you are young or old, experiencing Korea is certainly fascinating to each member of the family.

Our first day in South Korea was spent in the quaint French-themed cultural village Petite France. Its claim to fame is being one of the shooting locations of the hit romantic Koreanovela, “My Love from Another Star”, which I incidentally watched in just four nights upon my return in the Philippines. (Can you imagine, the last series I watched was “Lovers in Paris”?). French-inspired houses lined up the village making one feel that you are transported to Europe with a miniature Eiffel Tower, galleries, outdoor theater, among others.

A short ferry ride brought us to our next stop --- the 400,000-square meter Nami Island of “Winter Sonata” fame. As spring was just beginning, the picturesque Ginkgo Tree Lane was devoid of its lush leaves. However, this also created a dramatic mood during our leisurely stroll. After our delightful chicken barbeque lunch, my husband and I rented a tandem bike where we cycled in unison, enjoying the breathtaking gardens and woods of Nami. Truly magical!

The following day, our tour guide, Choi, arranged for our visit at the Samsung Innovation Museum in Suwon showcasing three main exhibition halls named the Age of Inventors, Age of Industry Innovation, and Age of Creation. The kids were in awe seeing the old appliances and gadgets of yesteryears and went giddy over future inventions such as Samsung’s Smart Home.

In the afternoon, Everland Resort awakened the child in all of us as we explored the exciting themed areas like Global Fair, American Adventure, Magic Land, European Adventure and Zoo Topia. After trying the more kid-friendly rides for the sake of our little ones, I braved the T Express, a thrilling roller coaster with the steepest falling degree in the world, along with the other adventure seekers in the group.

A photo session galore awaited us all on our third day at the three-dimensional Trick Eye and Ice Museum in Hongdae. With the aid of optical illusions, visitors can act as the characters in the 3-D murals. Fancy being a part of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Starry Night’; defy gravity in outer space; or swim with the sharks? Then, drop by the Trick Eye Museum and get ready to do some wacky acting.

All that posing and smiling made our group hungry so we decided to have a quick coffee and snack break at the adorable Hello Kitty Café, within walking distance from the Trick Eye Museum. Every HK fan will surely be mesmerized with this two-storey café which highlights all things Kitty from the decors, food and drinks.

The remaining part of the day was spent learning about the traditional way of life of the ordinary people and aristocracy at the National Folk Museum; followed by a stroll around the compound of the historic Gyeongbok Palace. The palace was erected during the reign of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty which lasted from 1392 to 1910.

Towards sunset, we went up to the 240-meter Seoul Tower considered as “Asia’s most beautiful tower”, where one can see a magnificent overview of the city from the observatory. Before leaving this famous landmark, we took photos at the Love Lock. This is where thousands of padlocks inscribed with the couples’ names were left by sweethearts at the fence symbolizing their promise of endless love.

On the final day of our tour, we learned how to make the staple Korean food which we have been eating since Day 1 --- the vitamin-enriched kimchi at the Kimchi School. According to our tour guide Choi, kimchi’s shelf life is 6 months and that the average Korean would have two refrigerators in their household; one to keep everyday essentials and another to store kimchi. Yes, Koreans love kimchi that much!

Hanbok wearing came next where my cousins and I had a blast donning the Korean traditional dresses and acting as the royal family of dynasties past. We blended perfectly well donning the costumes and could pass as true-blue Koreans with our chinky eyes!

Our guide, knowing the Filipinos’ penchant for shopping, brought us to Paju Premium Outlet for some good deals.

Since spring was in our midst, we dropped by Yeouido where the Cherry Blossom Tunnel is located. We caught a glimpse of the enchanting cherry blossoms as they started to bloom and indulged in some tasty street food as well.

Later in the night, we watched the Cookin’ Nanta, the longest running show in Korean history. It is a hilarious story about three cooks challenged to prepare a wedding banquet in only a short time. The task gets complicated when their bossy manager hires his incompetent nephew to join the kitchen crew. The must-see show effectively utilizes acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime as well as audience participation. Through improvised instruments such as kitchen knives, cutting boards and even water canisters, the performers were able to expertly showcase the traditional Korean samul nori music.

After our tour with Choi ended, my cousins and I extended for a few more days to discover Seoul’s sights and culinary offerings on our own and at a more relaxed pace. We stayed at Sejong Hotel, conveniently situated near the Myeongdong subway station. Just a few steps away from the hotel were a plethora of shops, restaurants, cafes and even night market to satisfy our incessant food cravings.

In the next days, we visited the Coex Aquarium in Gangnam where 40,000 underwater creatures from over 650 species were on display; Itaewon district for some retail shopping with dinner/drinks; the hip Ssamzie-gil Complex in Insadong (Those into arts and crafts would totally love it there!); Lotte Department Storefor some pasalubong shopping; Dongdaemun Design Plaza to view its various modern art exhibits; Namsangol Hanok Village to observe traditional Korean houses; and the trendy Garosugil, the so-called “Rodeo Drive” of Seoul, to witness how the fashionable set lives.

The very unique Cat Café in Myeongdong captured the hearts of our kids who absolutely adore animals. For just a minimal fee (inclusive of drinks), one can have snacks and beverages while interacting with the forty-five resident feline cuties of the café.  It was definitely a fitting and ‘purrfect’ way to cap our weeklong stay in Seoul.

Gamsahamnida, Korea, for our family’s priceless memories – and recaptured pictures!

“Mompowerment May at Abreeza”
Sun.Star Davao, May 23, 2015

Enterprising moms passionately showcased their family-friendly products at the recent MOMpreneur Fair held at the Abreeza Mall in celebration of Mother’s Day.

“Now on its second year, the MOMpreneur Fair continues to honor and celebrate moms who make a living on their own terms by bringing together a fantastic selection of merchandise by Davao’s mompreneurs with baby items, organic treats, food, desserts, bags, accessories, crafts, home décor, giveaways, novelty items as well as assorted services”, says Ms. Ruby Ochoa, Abreeza Mall’s marketing manager.

Gracing the fair was charming TV personality, book author and mom extraordinaire Amanda Griffin-Jacob who spoke about her life-changing experiences as a mother. She also had a book signing for her “Project Mom: Our Natural Approach to Motherhood”, a book which she co-wrote with fellow celebrity mom Bianca Araneta-Elizalde. Through “Project Mom”, Amanda and Bianca seek to guide mothers going through their pregnancy until their baby’s first birthday.

Abreeza Mall likewise partnered with LATCH Davao, the dynamic local counterpart of the Manila-based non-profit organization LATCH (Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling, Help), to educate moms on nursing and caring for their babies.

For two days, “Mommy Talk” took over the Activity Center stage with informative lectures on babywearing, cloth diapering, and the truths and myths about breastfeeding by the LATCH Davao moms.

To further promote its breastfeeding advocacy, LATCH Davao teamed up with Abreeza Mall for the “Yes to Breastfeeding!” Photo Exhibit, which is on display until May 31 at the 2nd Floor Hallway. The exhibit aims “to inspire women to breastfeed by educating them on the health benefits of breast milk, and to share photos and stories of real breastfeeding moms”.

“These exciting events are all part of “Mompowerment May”, a month-long campaign by Abreeza Mall that aims to celebrate and empower all the moms who make great things happen for themselves and their families in a myriad of ways”, reveals Ms. Ochoa.

Another component activity of the campaign is the “Thank You, Mom Photo Exhibit”, a touching tribute to the mothers of eight Davao personalities which will run at the Ground Floor Hallway until May 31.

And in keeping with the “Mompowerment May” theme, this year’s “Style Origin”, Ayala Malls’ annual fashion event, featured one of Philippine showbiz’s admirable young moms, Andi Eigenmann, walking the runway with adorable daughter Ellie.

“Goodness you can smile about”
Sun.Star Davao, June 6, 2015

There is no doubt that smiling is the best way to spread good vibes. Studies show that a smile instantly boosts your mood, decreases stress, lowers blood pressure, and makes you look oh-so-pretty!

“A healthy set of pearly whites has become synonymous to confidence and beauty”, says Karina Requillo, Human Nature Davao’s branch manager.

“With all these benefits, it’s not surprising that Filipinos brush their teeth religiously. Unfortunately, most synthetic toothpastes in the market contain chemicals that may harm your health”, she continues.

“Human Nature, the country’s largest genuinely natural personal care brand, brings you goodness you can smile about in its all-new Human Nature Natural Toothpaste”, shares Karina.

According to Karina, there are 3 reasons why you should switch to Human Nature Natural Toothpaste:

1. Get a genuinely healthy smile and fresher breath.

Human Nature Natural Toothpaste is powered by GreenMineral Plus, a natural formula with zinc citrate, calcium carbonate, fluoride, sesame seed oil, spearmint oil and peppermint oil. GreenMineral Plus helps fight plaque, tartar, and cavities while keeping your breath fresh naturally.

2. A toothpaste that’s safe for your family.

Unlike most toothpaste in the market, Human Nature Natural Toothpaste is 100% free from harmful chemicals. It contains no triclosan, no SLS, and propylene glycol.

Brushing your teeth is a pleasant experience with Human Nature. While most natural toothpastes taste unpleasant, Human Nature Natural Toothpaste was painstakingly developed in the Human Nature Natural Care Labs to be both free of harmful chemicals and great-tasting.

“After almost 3 years in development and over 100 prototypes, Human Nature’s Natural Toothpaste is a great achievement for Filipino scientists in creating a world-beating product”, Karina declares proudly.

In addition, Human Nature Natural Toothpaste is safe for children. It is recommended that for children below 6 years old, only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is needed for brushing, with adult supervision.

3. Kind on the planet.

Human Nature Natural Toothpaste takes care of planet Earth while keeping your smile bright. It is biodegradable and contains no plastic microbeads. Plastic microbeads are used in many personal care products as exfoliants and abrasives. Plastic microbeads are too small to be filtered out by wastewater treatment facilities, making them ocean and waterway pollutants.

Human Nature Natural Toothpaste is available at Human Natural branches, dealers, and via www.humanheartnature.com/buy. It is priced at only P149.75 (120g).

Human Nature Davao is at Plaza del Carmen, Loyola St., Bo. Obrero, Davao City.

“Turbo dad’s garage
Sun.Star Davao, June 20, 2015

As kids, some of us eagerly collected and traded stickers and stationeries. Others frolicked with their toy guns and prized marbles. For Architect Rafael “Raffy” Tayactac, Matchbox cars were his ultimate childhood passion.

“I remember I would save two pesos everyday from my baon to buy a toy car at the end of the week which cost ten pesos back in the day”, Raffy fondly reminisces. Then, using his mom’s shoeboxes, he would creatively transform them into a cool garage for his growing Matchbox collection.

In 2008, with a successful career as an architect, Raffy began to relive his hobby again. But, this time, he zoomed in on the real deal.

“My first car collection was a vintage Rover Mini Cooper which took me almost a year to restore. The restoration process gave me a different kind of high.  It was like putting back small pieces together until they were complete. And, that’s where my passion in collecting cars took off. It’s like playing with Lego but on a much bigger scale!”, enthuses Raffy.

Raffy divulges that being an architect helped him in restoring cars as it is also very similar to building houses, which he also absolutely loves.

“It takes six months to a year for me to restore a car.  It is always a challenge to me whenever I do it. I put my effort, patience and perseverance on my “babies”. And, at the end of a project, the feeling of fulfillment is priceless. It inspires and energizes me to do another one again. Before I knew it, my collection ballooned to a dozen cars already”, Raffy smiles.

When asked what he considers as among his favorite cars in his collection, Raffy cites his 1993 Porsche Carrera. “It is small yet with powerful air-cooled engine and of course, has excellent body curves”, he describes.

Being a doting dad to young sons Tofi and Ken, Raffy likewise wanted to share his passion with them. So, he decided to build a life-sized Lightning McQueen straight out of the Disney movie “Cars” much to the delight of his kids. This was followed by a miniature military jeep and recently, an impressive miniature village for their playroom at home. “And, my joy doubled because it now involves my family, most especially my kids”, says Raffy proudly.

A few years ago, Raffy became a member of Davao Classic and Sports Car Club which has other dads as co-members. “We share the same hobbies and talk all the time about cars. It’s nice meeting people with the same likes. With them, I learned how to be responsible on the road, and how to preserve and maintain cars. The club definitely expanded my horizons”, the University of Sto. Tomas graduate shares.

From Matchbox toys to real cars, this turbo dad is truly living his childhood dream. And, he wishes to pass on important values to his kids through his passion. “They should dream big and believe in themselves, and if they put their effort, patience and perseverance on their goals, nothing is impossible”, declares Raffy.

Happy Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads!
