“Skinfatuated with VMV”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 22, 2014

Growing up with sensitive skin, there was only one local brand that helped me survive my teenage years—VMV Hypoallergenics. Now, as a mom, I still continue to use various VMV products to look my best.

From a brand that one would find only in the Philippines’ department stores, VMV has emerged to be a successful world-class brand in the US, with its flagship VMV Skin-Specialist Boutique in SOHO, New York; Italy, Sweden, Norway, Mexico, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Spain, Japan, Singapore and Costa Rica (soon), both through e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar stores.

VMV is also close to my heart because a dear childhood friend/former neighbor of mine, Anna Marie Tancongco-Anastacio, is VMV’s awe-inspiring Chief Business Development Officer. Yes, we have a Davao connection at VMV!

Let’s get to know the dynamic Anna--business executive; president of the Chamber of Cosmetics Industry of the Phils., Inc.; wife to Warren and doting mom extraordinaire to Gian and Diego in this interview:

*How did the Tancongco family end up in Davao?

Our family is really from Cagayan de Oro. However, my dad worked for Del Monte, the manufacturer and marketer of processed food, as an operations head for the Mindanao plantations. Del Monte’s Mindanao office was based in Davao City. So, our family had to move to Davao City.

*How many years did you live in Davao? What was your childhood like?

I lived in Davao from 1982 until 1990, from 3rd grade until 4th year high school. About 8 years of my formative growth was spent in Davao. I had great memories growing up in Davao, among the best years of my life! At first, I didn’t know anyone at all, but I quickly gained awesome friends in our village such as you, the children of my dad’s colleagues in Del Monte who were Americans, Puerto Ricans, Spanish and Costa Ricans, and my schoolmates. I attended grade school in Stella Maris Academy, then went to high school in Ateneo de Davao. I was very blessed with a lot of friends, many of whom I still keep in touch through Facebook.

*What do you miss about life in Davao?

The food! I love durian, mangosteen and pomelo... So every time I go to Davao, I gorge on these fruits and bring crates back to Manila. And even when I buy fruits in Manila, I try to look for Del Monte or Dizon Farms produce... And, of course, my friends. Although some of them are already based in different places around the globe, some are still based in Davao.

*How did you end up working for the beauty industry?

Since companies usually start looking for prospects in colleges even before the students graduate, I immediately had three offers for work even before I graduated from Ateneo de Manila University. Two were banks and one was a cosmetic distribution company.

Among these three, it was actually the cosmetic distribution company that had the lowest offer - even lower than the monthly allowance my father would provide me when I was in school! However, I realized early on that I would rather work for an industry I know I will enjoy working in because then it wouldn’t feel like work, and the company had a portfolio that would be great on my resume. The company was part of a group of companies that distributed Estee Lauder, Clinique, Yves Rocher, Orlane, Burberry and other fragrances; Max Factor, Neutrogena and more.

Later on, I would get a call from VMV Hypoallergenics, inviting me to join them. Then I became a managing partner... And, the rest, as they say, is history.

*Can you give us a short background of VMV?

VMV was founded in 1979 by a research-oriented, well-published dermatologist-dermatopathologist.  With all 76 allergens omitted from our formulations — and with the first and still the only validated hypoallergenic rating system — there's no safer brand out there.

We’re thoroughly skinfatuated: besides loving every minute of what we do, our products are unabashedly skin love: validated hypoallergenic (sans all known cosmetic allergens); 100% all-types-of-fragrance-free; 100% phthalate, dye, paraben + preservative-free; and non-comedogenic.

We’re proud skintellectuals: we really know what we’re doing; so hypoallergenic, we’re part of the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s reference database; so medically
impressive, our studies appear in (and are even awarded by) peer-reviewed medical journals and conventions.

*What makes VMV different from other cosmetic brands?

Its key proposition is really being the safest, most proven effective care on the planet.

The safety comes from its proven hypoallergenicity. I know “hypoallergenic” as a claim has been thrown around a lot lately, but our definition is quite unique in that it is objective and has been validated.

What we did is to use the allergen lists published by two most respected dermatological groups, American Contact Dermatitis Society and the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies - and we exclude these allergens from our formulations.

The proven efficacy comes from our obsession with testing — at the highest standard. We patch test every ingredient, finished product and accessories such as brushes and puffs to ensure their hypoallergenicity.

Lastly, we’d like to say that we care for you, from our diapers to our dermabrasion. We’re skinvolved; we’re in this with our customers for the long haul. We have products for babies, for sun and light protection, shaving, body and bath, for different skin concerns such as acne, anti-aging, lightening, and even a laundry shampoo for those who are allergic to regular laundry detergents!

*In recent years, VMV has expanded its market globally, what was your personal experience like pushing a Filipino brand to other countries?

At first, it was quite tough. The Philippines is not really known for skin care or cosmetics. It is more known for things like furniture, or for its skilled workers. We didn’t let that deter us. We were clear on our positioning as a brand: that we are a validated hypoallergenic brand and its science is evidence-based.

We let the brand’s strengths speak for itself instead of focusing on the origin. Many Filipinos were telling us “why don’t you target the Filipino communities abroad first?”. We knew we had a great brand story to tell and solid science-based products to showcase. So we decided not to limit ourselves to a specific community only. We went in the mainstream, accessible premium category in every market we entered. And when the consumers find out that we are actually from the Philippines (the packaging also says that we are “Made in the Philippines”), it becomes a pleasant surprise!

What also worked for us is the trend on organics and naturals. The driving force behind the organics and naturals trend is really the consumers’ desire to have ‘safe’ products for them to use.

Truth is, not all organic and natural are actually safe - peanuts and lanolin can be organic and natural but highly allergenic. Strawberries can be organic and natural, but some people are very allergic to it. So, VMV’s hypoallergenic angle fits very well into that market need, not only delivering safe but also effective products.

*If I were a busy mom and could only have time to do my make-up for 5 minutes, what VMV products do you recommend?

For on-the-go make-up, I suggest our Skintelligent BBBB (BB But Better) Skintangible SPF 30 as a starter. It evens out skin tone, gives you that fresh, dewy, natural look. At the same time, it gives you SPF 30 to protect your skin against damaging effects from sun and light exposure.

Then, apply a dash of Skintelligent Beauty Skin Bloom Blush to give cheeks definition and radiance. We also have dye-free options for those with extra-sensitive skin.

A mascara is a must! It enhances your eyes and it can make a difference to your whole face. VMV’s Ooh-La-Lash! Volumizing Mascara forms tubes around each lash. It is non-smearing so it won’t give you the “racoon eyes” at the end of the day. It is also easy to wipe off with VMV’s make-up remover or with warm water, with just few splashes, the tubes slip right off.

Then of course, a lip color. VMV’s Skintelligent Lipstick range offers different textures of lipsticks - from Subtle Shine for that elegant basic look, to Velvet Matte for that full coverage, full bodied, dramatic velvet finish, to Glitz for that glimmer glam look - and in colors available both in dye and dye-free shades.

*I’ve heard so many good things about your Grandma Minnie line. What makes it such a hit with moms and kids?

Our Grandma Minnie would be our gentlest skin care line. All of the Grandma Minnie products contain an effective coconut-derived, anti-bacterial ingredient called monolaurin. Monolaurin is also anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-protozoal. Together with monolaurin, all our Grandma Minnie products also contain USDA certified, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil. So, you get all the goodness of VCO as well.

The most popular product in that line is ‘The Big, Brave, Boo-Boo Balm’. I always carry around and travel with one. It is the best ‘emergency’ buddy you can have. Got insect bites? Boo-Boo Balm soothes away itchiness while monoloaurin will also subside the inflammation. Got scrapes and shallow cuts? Boo-Boo Balm’s anti-bacterial properties will stop it from getting infected and facilitate faster healing. Got chapped lips? Apply Boo-Boo Balm’s moisturizing properties can help. Got joggers’ nipple chafing and bleeding? A common injury suffered by runners which has soreness and, in extreme cases, even cracked and bleeding nipples. We recommend the use of Boo-Boo Balm before and after a run. I have heard so many other cases where Boo-Boo Balm was so useful for our customers, even in loosening skin when stuck during use of superglue!

*Lastly, what are the must-have products of VMV for the family?

It’s difficult to only choose a few products to recommend as our products tend to have different purposes for each of the member of the family. But for basics, I would recommend the following at the very least:

ARMADA FACE COVER 30, 45 OR 60: A daily use of sunscreen by everyone in the family is a must. Skin cancer, even among Filipinos, is on the rise. Most people think that they only need protection from the sun. Recent studies have shown that immunosuppression and skin cancer can also be triggered by constant exposure to indoor lights that emit UVA, infrared and visible light.

ARMADA SPORT 70: For outdoor activities such as sports or family vacations. American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) strongly recommends that sunscreen be reapplied every two hours at least.

BOO-BOO BALM: A basic emergency buddy for any “boo-boos”.

ESSENCE ANTI-BACTERIAL HAND GEL:Viruses are easily passed around from the things we touch. Schools can be a great haven of viruses as children interact with sick teachers or classmates. So I always make sure that all (and I am not kidding) of my family members have their own Essence Hand Gel so they can easily sanitize anytime, anywhere.

***********

In Davao, VMV products can be found at Ayala Abreeza Mall, Chimes and SM Department Stores.

The company will have a VMV Skin-Specialist Boutique in January 2015 in the soon-to-be-opened Centrale Mall, offering their products and facial services.

VMV can also be accessed through their online stores: vmvhypoallergenics.com for markets outsides the Philippines, and vmvhypoallergenics.ph for the Philippines.

“Oh my Omni!”
Sun.Star Davao, Aug. 1, 2015

If you are a practical mom like me, choosing the right household appliances and lights is something one takes seriously to save on rising electricity costs.

After 15 years, our first-ever refrigerator as a married couple conked out which left us with no choice but to switch to a new one. This time, we decided to invest in an inverter-type ref. On the other hand, our trusty air conditioner was also given its due retirement following years of loyal service. These simple changes gave us reasons to smile whenever we received our monthly electric bill for we did experience significant savings. Best of all, our food stays fresh longer and our room cools more efficiently with the upgrades.

When it comes to value-for-money lighting, Filipino households have relied on Omni for generations.

Omni LED bulbs consume 90 percent less energy compared to Omni incandescent bulbs. Even if the bulbs have high luminous efficacy, they are low on energy consumption. Its low heat emission likewise aids in the air conditioner’s electricity costs.

Because of its efficiency, one can actually save an average of Php 1,584.00 on one-year electricity bill by switching just a single halogen bulb to an MR16 Omni LED. Furthermore, Omni LED bulbs can last up to 40 times more than regular incandescent bulbs, so one also saves on operational and maintenance cost.

Recently, Omni launched its first batch of Davao brand ambassadors. Here’s what some have to say regarding the well-loved Filipino brand which they not only use in their homes but in their businesses and professions as well:

“As our athletes work on their fitness, we make sure we work on our lighting. Finding the perfect illumination and temperature mix for our gym in only one brand.”---Trent Pruett and Kevin Cracknell, Coaches of Crossfit DMA.

“My profession calls for the best lighting system. That’s why for me there is only one brand.”---Sofia Sibala – Hair and Make-Up Artist

“I am very particular with my lights. They need to have the best balance of color, luminance and temperature; and I only know of one brand.”---Milvene Mineses, Photographer, WPPI Member, Owner of Simply Gray Studio

“Isa lang ang ilaw ng tahanan ko.” --- Erika Soriano-Mata, Wife and mother of 3, The woman behind HUMABI Bags for a Cause

“Counting, recording and monitoring are only a few of a banker’s endless tasks. This is why we require the best lighting system for the job – the kind of clarity, brightness, coolness and accuracy that only Omni can deliver.” --- Kristianne Jungco, Banker

“I do intensive research both online and on hard copies for my lectures. Cool and steady lights at home and in school make it possible.” --- Jade Solaña, CPA, MBA (CAR), College Instructor II

“I couldn’t have kept up with my studying schedule without dependable lights at home.”--- Gea Sedayao, San Pedro College graduate, incoming St. Luke’s Med student

“Only the best lighting for all our business operations.” ---Jun and Mimi Tupas, Entrepreneurs, One Fab Pooch, Soul Kitchen Co. and Soul Lifestyle

“A teacher’s work doesn’t end in school. Main reason why I only insist for the best brand every time I prepare at home.” ---Lunar Fayloga, Educator

“Reesa’s Slide and Ride”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 13, 2014

Ariana Melissa Tempongko Villanueva, or Reesa to her family and close friends, is an avid home baker. Chocolate Chip Cookies, Red Velvet and Carrot Cupcakes are among her scrumptious bestsellers.

Currently a second year college student at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Reesa is taking up BS Community Nutrition.

Recently, Reesa celebrated her 18th birthday, with a unique concoction that warms the heart.

Here is the recipe for Reesa’s satisfying birthday treat!

PRE-HEAT THE OVEN.

Reesa’s decision to forego the traditional cotillion was not made overnight.

As the daughter of Gawad Kalinga (GK) full-time worker Ricky Villanueva, she was a mere 4-year old kid when her father started bringing her to communities to paint houses, till backyard vegetable gardens and play with the children of the GK villages.

Gawad Kalinga, which means to “give care” in Filipino, is recognized globally as a world-class Filipino movement for nation building. It has built close to 2,000 beautiful and thriving communities for the poorest of the poor.

At the age of 18, Reesa was ready to choose a road less-travelled, and to celebrate a milestone in her teenage life.

How else? The GK way! Where else? Her favorite village – GK Pueblo Antonio in Catigan, Toril, Davao City.

SIFT TOGETHER THE DRY INGREDIENTS.

Reesa had to give something concrete, something that the community would benefit from for the long-term.

A stainless work table for the ube processors? Too serious. A fresh coat of paint for the GK houses? Too grown-up.

Even at 18, Reesa was still a child at heart. Bingo! An outdoor playground! The garden fronting the Daycare Center was conveniently vacant – a void that two sets of slides, swings and see-saws would do well to fill.

A GK Playground, this would be Reesa’s long-lasting and tangible legacy to GK Pueblo Antonio!

ADD THE WET INGREDIENTS AND MIX UNTIL WELL-COMBINED.

What is an 18th birthday celebration without a party?

And, so, Reesa planned a typical children’s party – complete with the staple fried chicken and spaghetti (cooked by the Pueblo Antonio Cooperative), chocolate cupcakes (from the ovens of GK Sakadab Village); fun games and prizes; party give-aways; and the party clown who entertained the children for an entire morning.

The highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of the stone marker, Ariana’s Slide and Ride, which formally opened the playground to the children of GK Pueblo Antonio.

COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE FROSTING.

This was to be the icing on Reesa’s proverbial cake: the Daycare children of the village came together and offered her a song, followed by a bouquet of flowers, freshly picked from the homes of the GK residents, and arranged by the mothers of GK Pueblo Antonio.

That exact moment affirmed Reesa’s conviction that a life lived for others is its greatest reward.

NUMBER OF SERVINGS

A whole community of children, and generations of children for years to come!

(The above article was beautifully written by Monique Tempongko-Villanueva, my good friend and the lovely mother of Reesa for Human Nature Davao’s #HeroesRising. Special thanks to Reesa’s elder sister, Kimie Villanueva, for the photos.)

“You the Mom!”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 27, 2014

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s ‘Super Mom’!

With their almost superhuman qualities, dynamic Mommy Mundo founder Janice Villanueva admires moms for their powers in time management and multitasking alongside their ability to do anything and everything for their loved ones.

“And, they accomplish all of these things wholeheartedly and passionately at that!”, Janice declares.

“Because most moms do their tasks with grace and usually with flair even, we may sometimes forget to show her some appreciation and affirmation. Even moms themselves don’t seem to recognize their own efforts because taking on numerous responsibilities and caring for those we love comes naturally to us. Still, we should take pride in who we are and the important roles we play not only in our own families, but also in our communities and country”, Janice enthuses.

At the recent Expo Mom 2014, Mommy Mundo recognized moms for their many big and small accomplishments through their campaign, “You the Mom!”. The said campaign puts “the spotlight on all the unbelievably good things that moms do by featuring women whose stories represent every mom who has made a difference in her community, her family and her child’s life”.

I was privileged to be one of the inspiring Davao moms of the “You the Mom!” campaign together with Marga Montemayor-Nograles, Lyn Buyco-Tan, Mimi Vergara-Tupas, Olive Puentespina, and Gel Ferrer. We may be involved in different fields and advocacies but all of us share one common thing – motherhood is by far the most challenging and fulfilling role we’ve ever had!

Now on its seventh year, “Expo Mom is the biggest of its kind, gathering progressive, active moms in an environment that’s both recreational and educational. It has become a venue for like-minded moms to establish lasting connections and has also become the catalyst for the mompreneur movement in Manila”, Janice shares.

In Davao, Expo Mom has been organized here only for the second time. Showcasing over 20 booths at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center, the event highlighted exciting all-day talks, demos and raffle draws.

The enlightening talks and activities included “Joomajam” by Vin Dancel of Ritmo; “Your Baby’s Cordblood-Why Bank it?” by Cord Life; “Delightful Electrolux-Price is Right?”; “Best Beginnings” by LATCH Davao; “Building Character in our Children in their Tender Years” by Boyet and Elaine Quinto of EDUCHILD; “Let’s Talk About Fashion” by Erika Soriano-Mata; “Mom and Me Fashion Show” by Stockbridge International School and Soul Lifestyle; “5-Minute Makeup for the Busy Mom” by Carine Bacani; “The Seed Sower” by Lyn Tan; and “Mimathology: Premier Child Photography” by Mima Tan.

Aside from Manila and Davao, Expo Mom has also expanded its campaign to Cebu and Bacolod.

“Mission: Makeover ‘Ma’am’ “
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 11, 2014

Day in and day out, our kids spend most of their waking hours in school. Acting as our trusted partners in molding our dearest children to be the best that they can be are their kind-hearted and selfless teachers.

In celebration of Teachers’ Day, the Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship (DCHS PTF), of which I am the president for this school-year, treated the school’s well-loved teachers to a much-deserved night of makeup and fashion through a special workshop.

Conducting the exciting workshop was one of Davao’s leading professional makeup artists, Carine Bacani, and the lovely fashion stylist and fellow DCHS mom Erika Soriano-Mata.

Mission : Makeover Ma’am

Carine, originally from Manila, moved to Davao three years ago with her husband and two kids. She is a makeup artist and beauty workshop trainer for private and corporate clients.

She studied makeup artistry at the Maquillage Professionnel School of Makeup Artistry and has worked with close to one hundred clients for activities ranging from debuts, formals, weddings, and corporate seminars.

On the other hand, Erika is a mom of three brilliant kids and the ever supportive and loving wife of Dr. Richard Mata. A graduate of Medical Technology from the San Pedro College, Erika has always turned heads not only for her beauty but for her tasteful fashion style. Recently, she has found a newfound career as a much sought-after speaker for talks on fashion.

Ten-minute Makeup for Busy Teachers

During the workshop, Carine taught and demonstrated the “Ten-Minute Makeup for Busy Teachers” and for a fun night out, the more dramatic smokey eyes using Human Nature and VMV Hypoallergenics’ makeup, our generous sponsors for the event.

Last summer, my sisters-in-law and I along with our friends first met Carine during an intimate makeup workshop session at home. It was a great bonding time with girlfriends as we were taught the basics of makeup using our existing stash and tools.

It was the same jovial atmosphere last pre-Teachers’ Day celebration as the teachers listened eagerly to Carine who shared her practical makeup tips. For instance, Carine shared that according to her pediatrician, did you know that when the speaker wears red lipstick, the listeners tend to be more attentive? Wow, that’s such useful information for teachers yearning for their students’ undivided attention!

Beautiful inside and out

Erika is a dear mommy friend whom I adore to bits! She is beauty and brains personified. I’ve always admired her for her tried and tested taste in fashion. Sometimes, she may be dressed simply in just a plain white shirt and jeans but when she puts her personal take on it through well-chosen accessories, she “levels up” the look.

In the workshop, Erika, who is a former Penshoppe billboard model, imparted sensible ways on how to dress appropriately for different occasions as well as according to one’s body type. She also emphasized the importance of finding your fashion style.

At the end of the workshop, teachers Mary Jane Manseguiao and Cristina Sasube, experienced a total makeover courtesy of Carine and Erika.

Each wearing the day (“no makeup/flawless”) and smokey makeup look by Carine, the two teachers were stunning donned in Erika’s pre-selected ‘surprise’ outfits.

Erika wowed us all as she was only given a budget of P1,250 each for the teachers’ new look which included their semi-formal dresses, accessories and shoes.

We capped the unforgettable night by giving away fantastic raffle prizes from Human Nature, VMV Hypoallergenics and Bloom Facial Spa.

Christian High’s next top model

Two weeks after, the PTF’s pre-Teachers’ Day treat came in handy as the DCHS Student Council organized the school’s annual Teachers’ Day celebration with the theme, “Christian High’s Next Top Model : Setting the Best Example”.

Inspired by the reality hit TV series, “America’s Next Top Model”, excited cheers from students reverberated in the school auditorium as the teachers gamely sashayed on the red carpet with their best looks.

It is worthy to note, however, that the theme of the affair did not only highlight the teachers as ‘fashion models’ but most importantly, it also focused on the educators’ role in molding the students’ character and values and how they have made a significant impact in their students’ lives.

To all the amazing and wonderful teachers in the Philippines and around the world, Happy Teachers’ Day! Cheers to you!
****

The DCHS PTF’s “Mission : Makeover Ma’am” could not have been possible without the all-out support of the ‘glam team’ Ms. Carine Bacani (For bookings, check out www.carinebacani.com; like her on Facebook: Makeup by Carine) and Ms. Erika Soriano-Mata; Human Nature’s Monique Villanueva, Joy Mempin and Sylvia Rieta; VMV Hypoallergenics’ Anna Anastacio, Marie Cortez and Jacklyn Remo; and Bloom Facial and Spa’s Golda Divinagracia. Our sincerest thanks to all of you for making the DCHS advanced Teachers’ Day treat such a memorable one!

Special thanks to Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw for Carine’s photo.

“Qaleesi’s feast with a twist”
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 25, 2014

Mark and Natalie Wee have a fun and unique tradition when it comes to naming their adorable kids.

“We alphabetized our names according to the eldest, which is the dad of course, M (Mark); followed by the mom, N (Natalie). Our firstborn is automatically O (Ogin), then the second P (Pepito), and finally, our youngest...Q!”, Natalie smiles. However, their penchant for finding one-of-a-kind names was put to the test with the letter Q.

“At the time we were following the TV series, Game of Thrones (GOT), and found the character of Daenerys Targaryen who holds the title of a Khaleesi, which means Queen in Dothraki, fascinating. This character then develops into a courageous ruler who is strong-willed with a scholarly mind yet compassionate and honored and loved by her people. All of these characteristics were what we sought in our baby girl”, Natalie reveals.

Finally, they had a name for their darling bundle of joy, Qaleesi Noelle!

Feast with a twist

When they started conceptualizing the first birthday theme of their dearest Qaleesi, the doting parents did not think twice in choosing the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme.

“Instead of GOT’s gory medieval theme though, we gave Qaleesi’s birthday celebration a festive and feminine twist by utilizing gold and pinkish hues”, says Natalie.

Hands-on mom Natalie organized the GOT-themed party at The Apo View grand ballroom in only 6 weeks. “I already knew and trusted my suppliers for this party and thus, the preparations were a breeze!“, she shares.

Natalie and Mark, who own and operate “Hobby with My Hubby” on the side, have always been the DIY kind of parents since their eldest child’s party. For Qaleesi’s party, they designed and printed their own invites using the customized emblem for Q and addressed it in a GOT context.

The main reason why the Wees painstakingly bake and decorate their scrumptious dessert buffet is for their kids' parties and Qaleesi’s party was no exception!

Hobby with My Hubby made a voracious and impressive spread of GOT-themed sweets such as cookies with the design of the emblem and labeled it “Dragonstone Crest”. There were also labels like “Riverrun Boats” for Alor's boat-shaped fruit tarts; “Casterly Rock Tower” for Emily Herrera's French macaron tower; and, “Hodor's Matcha Cheese” and “King's Landing Cake” for Lachi's bite-sized cheesecakes.

To keep in line with the theme, these delectable confectioneries were carefully laid on Natalie’s mother's antique vanity table and bedside tables along with a quaint cupboard refurbished by Casa Soriano.

‘Game of Thrones’ theme

Natalie has always believed in her friend, Khim Cruz of Party Deco, for her ability to put to realization what the Wees have envisioned for their kids’ parties.

For the ‘Game of Thrones’ stage décor, Party Deco built a castle with a utilitarian design in soft pink shades and a smoke-breathing dragon perched on top. “Very much GOT for a baby girl!”, enthuses Natalie.

The sigil of every house of ‘Game of Thrones’ was also creatively incorporated in the party stations like the “House of Stark” for Aling Foping’s Halo-Halo Station; “House of Tyrell” for Pizza Pedrico; and “House of Baratheon” for Waffle Time.

Banners in the ceiling works and acrylic cut-outs for the table centerpieces also had the same design as the sigil and their catchphrases.

Emily Lim-Cimafranca did an exquisite 5-tiered birthday cake decorated with the elements of GOT. The first layer was artistically wrapped in golden dragon scale; a 3D dragon representing Khaleesi's dragons in another layer; the emblem in the top layer; and the iron throne for the topper.

Entertaining the guests through songs and dances were Qaleesi’s older siblings, Ogin and Pepito, with their cousins Chloe, Chelsea and David. On the other hand, the kids' dance instructor, Mervin Roble, and his group Rhythmic Illusions choreographed an action-packed sword fight/dance to the GOT theme song.

"A ‘boo’-tiful 8 years”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 8, 2014

Superheroes, Disney characters, spooky creatures….I can still vividly remember my first ever article for “Mom-About-Town” in 2006 entitled “The Village” featuring kids in Halloween costumes doing their “trick or treat”.

Back then, the experience of capturing the happy and excited faces of the children was such a thrill. And, to finally see my hard work on print, was pure bliss!

I had no inkling then if I would be writing for Sun.Star Davao for a year; maybe two? Never did I imagine that 8 years after, I would still be here to celebrate yet another anniversary.

It has been a ‘boo’-tiful 8 years… let’s flashforward to Halloween 2014!

“Marvelously Marbled”
Sun.Star Davao, Aug. 15, 2015

My personal preference when it comes to eating steak is its marbling --- lots of it! And, when it comes to marbling, Wagyu is definitely on top of my list.

Wagyu (pronounced ‘wag-you’) is “a breed of cattle native and unique in their genetics to Japan. ‘Wa’ pertains to Japanese and ‘gyu’ means beef. This beef is highly marbled which means that the muscle is finely interspersed with fat that is an ‘intra-muscular’ deposit of energy. When cooked, the marbling is absorbed into the muscle and gives the beef its “melt in the mouth” moisture and tenderness as well as its intense flavor”, according to an internet source.

The good news is that the marbling in Wagyu is found to contain monounsaturated fats. Research has shown that these fats can actually assist in reducing cholesterol levels in the body.

Highest grade beef

Recently, I was pleased to discover that my elusive bachelor-friend, Glenn Yap, took his passion for steak to the next level by opening Marbled Restaurant and Bar specializing in Wagyu A-5 beef, no less, the highest grade given only to the finest beef.

“I love steak!”, shares Glenn with a twinkle in his eye. “Marbled, a name coined by a witty friend, is three years in the making. I didn’t rush opening this restaurant because I wanted to consider every factor. We wanted our restaurant to be known for its reasonable price and good service”, he continues.

With Chef Richie Mearns, a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, as its consultant, Marbled’s menu showcases lip-smacking family-friendly dishes with the Wagyu A-5 beef as its piece de resistance.

“In Manila, most steak houses sell their Wagyu at Php800 to Php1,000 per ounce but here at Marbled, we sell it an affordable Php450 per ounce only”, shares Glenn.

Young restaurateur

Marbled is not Glenn’s first foray in the food industry. He has been a franchisee of the popular Cebu restaurant chain Chikaan at Abreeza Mall Davao for four years and also operates Pollo Porco Cebu Lechon.

“Running a resto is never easy. It is a challenge but it really depends on your mindset. Chikaan has a system we followed which made it easier”, recalls Glenn.

From Chikaan, he learned that to be able to run a great restaurant, good food shouldn’t be profit-based. Instead, the focus should be on the quality of food and service”, explains Glenn.

‘Straightforward’ dishes

That’s why with Marbled, Glenn made sure that they presented value-for-money choices for their clientele. My family and I were pleased with the options they offered --- Japanese, American, and Italian dishes that Glenn describes as ‘straightforward’.

During our family’s first visit, we ordered their delectable French Onion Soup (Php210); Seafood Chowder (Php250) and Spinach Dip (Php140) as our soups and appetizer.

The kids absolutely loved their mouth-watering Spaghetti with Spanish Chorizo (Php250) and Fettuccine with Tomato Cream Sauce and Chicken (Php180). If the pasta tastes a tad familiar, you would be happy to know that it is because Chef Richie owned the former Boyd’s Pizza House of Kidapawan and Davao.

My sister-in-law and I had the Grilled Pork Chop (Php250) and Seared Salmon with Caper Sauce (Php595). They filled our tummies and did not disappoint with their generous servings and side dishes of seared potatoes and vegetables in season.

Marvelously Marbled

Other family members had US Prime Rib-Cowboy Steak (half-inch 500g steak at Php1,350) and US Rib Eye – Choice 320g (Php950). The steaks’ huge portions were more than enough for sharing as I caught my mom discreetly leaving huge cuts of her meat on my plate.

And, finally, the main reason why we were gathered at Marbled --- the Wagyu!

True to its claim, the Wagyu A-5 beef (Sirloin 150g at Php1,900 and Chateaubriand 200g at Php3,200) --- perfectly cooked medium well, and sprinkled with salt; melted in our mouths and boy, was it divine!

Marbled Restaurant and Bar is at JJ Commune, Loyola St., Bo. Obrero, Davao City with telephone number 2243594. Open Sunday-Thursday from 1030am-10pm and Friday-Saturday from 1030am till late.

"Belo belles"
Sun.Star Davao, Aug. 29, 2015

Mother and daughter team Dr. Vicki Belo and Cristalle Belo Henares perfectly complement each other.

Dr. Belo, who is the Belo Medical Group’s founder, admits that between the two of them, it is Cristalle who is more entrepreneurial while she, on the other hand, sticks to the medical side of her practice and business. The 32-year old Cristalle acts as the CEO of Belo Essentials as well as the Managing Director of the Belo Medical Group.

From a 44-square meter clinic in 1990, the Belo Medical Group now operates eleven state-of-the-art clinics that are strategically located across the Philippines, including its latest clinic in Davao’s Abreeza Mall.

Dr. Belo reveals that “the Belo Medical Group offers a comprehensive range of treatments from skin care to non-invasive, surgical and age-defying solutions. The group’s innovative approach to beauty has pioneered the application of the latest technologies from the US, France, Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Brazil, Israel, Japan and Korea”.

“It is what makes us unique. We focus on bringing the latest available technology, medical procedure and products from across the globe to provide the best possible solutions for our patients.  The Belo Medical Group’s 25 years of exceptional expertise in the specialized field of aesthetic dermatology and cosmetic surgery has earned it numerous awards and recognitions”, she adds.

Up close and personal
To highlight its 25th year, the Belo Medical Group brought in the Belo Festivale in Davao, a four-day event showcasing the group’s brand story with various activities wherein patrons can take photos, and avail of Belo products and treatments at the Abreeza Mall. It culminated with a mini show by Club Mwah and ‘Belo baby’, Piolo Pascual.
During the recent exclusive media affair celebrating the Belo Medical Group’s anniversary at Seda Hotel, we spent a few hours getting to know Dr. Belo’s personal journey and the inspiring story of her mega success.
Joining Dr. Belo was her lovely daughter Cristalle as well as celebrity endorsers, 1973 Ms. Universe Margie Moran-Floirendo and multi-awarded actor Piolo Pascual.
There is something so sincere and candid when the charming Dr. Belo starts to talk. She has no qualms in divulging sensitive issues beginning with her life as an adopted child who was bullied at 5 years old in school. “Fat and ugly” were among the mean words uttered to her by mischievous classmates.
Growing up as a teen, she had unsightly pimples which made her a regular patient with a dermatologist. These experiences shaped her passion to specialize in the same field when she took up medicine.
‘Cristalle’ clear
Even if she came from a privileged background, Cristalle knows the value of paying it forward. In 2004, she volunteered as a pre-school worker for 10 months in Bukidnon with only Php3,500.00 as her monthly allowance.
After college, she started working for the Belo Medical Group in 2005. One of her biggest projects was overseeing the construction of the Belo building in Greenhills approving the plans and materials and collaborating with the design team. Dr. Belo confidently delegates these kinds of tasks to Cristalle as she is not fond of the rigors of site inspections and going over the details.

In 2007, the Belos launched their own beauty line, Belo Essentials, which with phenomenal sales is now serving as the retail arm that distributes beauty and personal care products to drugstores, supermarkets, and selected countries.

It is ‘Cristalle’ clear why Dr. Belo is mighty proud of her daughter and why her unica hija is beaming with pride over her mom’s continued success. Together, they commit to fulfill Belo’s vision to “make the Philippines, the most beautiful country in the world, one person at a time”.

So, what’s next for these unstoppable Belo belles? “World domination!”, declares Dr. Belo playfully.

“#JABOrn4MAYCE: Best friends’ wedding”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 12, 2015

He enjoys playing basketball and PS4 (NBA) while she is passionate in cooking.

She graduated from Davao Christian High School as a Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Leadership Awardee while he was bestowed the title, “Athlete of the Year”, from the University of Immaculate Conception upon his graduation.

In God's perfect time, the two achievers Jan Vincent “Jabo” Abellera and Maycelle Billanes' paths finally crossed when they were both nursing students at the Ateneo de Davao University.

“We started out as classmates and later on, became friends. Although we only talked inside the classroom when Jabo needed answers during our Anatomy and Filipino quizzes, we got along really well. It took a few more years for us to realize that we were meant to be more than just friends”, recalls Maycelle.

Eventually, Jabo had to move to another school. Losing communication and breaking up were inevitable because of the situation.

"Until one Christmas eve, I received a telephone call from Jabo. From there, we started to be civil with each other again. While I had been slowly moving on, Jabo came back and asked if we could be together again”, smiles Maycelle.

“True enough, as the saying goes, ‘Love is sweeter the second time around’. From being childish, we slowly became mature; exploring and experiencing God's goodness. A lot of trials went our way but we just learned to love each other more as time passed by. We both patiently waited for what He really planned for us”, narrates Maycelle.

Jabo went into business and started his own construction supply. On the other hand, Maycelle, a registered nurse, decided to serve at her high school alma mater by being the Office of the Student Affairs' officer-in-charge while pursuing her master's degree.

Last month, with the blessings of their loving parents Johnny and Yolanda Abellera, and Romeo and Genoveva Billanes,  the young couple tied the knot on a glorious sunny day  at the St. Joseph The Worker Parish in a lovely ceremony officiated by Fr. Danny Montana.

As the bedimpled bride walked down the aisle wearing an off-shoulder serpentina creation, Maycelle's model-like height gave the bridal gown the attention it justly deserved.

Upon seeing the bride with her cheerful smile and radiant glow, Jabo donning an Edgar Buyan barong, shed tears of joy, grateful that their more than 6 years as sweethearts and best friends led to this most awaited day.

Veejay Salonga of Decoratives by Janna and Hercs created the rustic shabby chic feel at the church with wood stands and white flowers filling up the lighted aisle.

Meanwhile, at the reception held at the Grand Regal Hotel, the all-white stage had a fireplace in the middle decorated with delightful flowers arrangements and vintage-looking lamps, mirrors, chairs and console tables.

The principal sponsors' special area was festooned with lighted trees and mason jars as well as decorative containers adorned with blooms.

“We wanted our wedding to have a homey atmosphere, simple and pretty with a touch of pink everywhere”, describes Maycelle.

Thanks to their trusted suppliers, family, friends and DIY creativity, Jabo and Maycelle's dream wedding turned out the way they always envisioned it to be --- and so much more!

My sincerest appreciation to Marlon Advincula for the wedding photos. To view more snaps of the wedding, search #JABOrn4MAYCE on Facebook and Instagram.

“Be your best with BrainFit”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 26, 2015

With today’s “touch generation” and fondness for multi-tasking, we hear parents lamenting about their children’s poor focus and inattentiveness in school.

“Humans actually have naturally short attention spans. What is happening to kids nowadays is that they are just not learning the skills needed to focus when it is necessary”, says Khaisa King, a double degree graduate in BS Management and AB Psychology from the Ateneo de Manila University.

Khaisa is the Davao franchisee of BrainFit Studio, a program founded by Singapore-based clinical physiotherapist Cheryl Chia who believes that “each individual has a unique brain profile”. Aside from the Philippines, BrainFit is located in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Turkey.

“I decided to start BrainFit in Davao because the concepts and ideas really made sense to me. I already heard about BrainFit from Singapore previously, and it was always positive with comments. Further inquiries on the company showed that it employs a well-researched and scientifically-backed approach to helping people achieve excellence, children in particular, through capitalizing on our natural brain plasticity. Brain plasticity is the ability of the brain to shape and change their connections to be more efficient in the things we think of often”, explains Khaisa.

Brain pillars

BrainFit can help by assessing each brain’s strengths and weaknesses with a CognitiveMap, an evaluation tool that determines which of the child’s five Brain Pillars need enhancement. It aids kids from 3-18 years old to maximize their brains’ potentials.

Khaisa clarifies that BrainFit is different from other after-school programs because they do not teach any content in their classes. Instead of training the kids to be better in English or Math by making them do repetitions or exercises on these specific topics, BrainFit trains the base skills of the child so they can learn better on their own.

The program operates on the concept that there are five Brain Pillars to measure the fitness of one’s brain, just like there are measures for physical fitness, and if these five pillars are fit, then one can learn and understand things faster and better, just like being physically fit makes physical activities easier. These are namely, sensory-motor; visual; auditory; focus and attention; and socio-emotional.

Enhancing base skills

BrainFit focuses on making these pillars strong through specially-designed exercises and activities so that children can comprehend and absorb their lessons as they are being taught by the teacher. With these, the program aims to develop independent learners.

“The program for sensory-motor for example helps our students have better body awareness and control, which leads to better and more legible  handwriting, better coordination to play games with friends, and the ability to sit still for longer in class, among other things. We come up with activities that engage the senses and overall muscle control of the student; therefore, there is better brain connectivity with the senses, muscles and joints. This leads to overall better sensory-motor control, a base skill that the student can then apply to all aspects of life, not just academics”, Khaisa emphasizes.

All their other programs operate the same way, with respect to their specific brain pillars.

Stronger brain connections

BrainFit guarantees results, as long as the student follows their minimum 2-hour sessions a week (1 hour per session). Khaisa and her dynamic team assure that there will be tangible effects by the end of the recommended number of programs (20 sessions per program). Length of time depends on how often one schedules their sessions.

“We do have studies validating that improvements gained BrainFit’s programs stay with our students even after they have stopped coming to us. There are actual physical changes that happen in the brain which represent the stronger brain connections made during our program. This visibly show in behavioral changes, faster understanding, less fidgeting when sitting, better communication, etc.”, reveals Khaisa with pride.

To schedule a free trial, contact/visit BrainFit Studio at Unit 3B Bajada Plaza, J.P. Laurel Ave., Davao City with telephone numbers 2242118/(0916)2478765. BrainFit will soon open their second branch in Matina, D.C.

“Dimsum Break in Davao”
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 10, 2015

The festive sound of beating drums and the energetic moves of the lion dance welcomed Dimsum Break’s customers as it opened its doors at Gaisano Mall of Davao recently.

“Launched in 1996, the very first Dimsum Break branch introduced the interactive or fast food style of serving dimsum in Cebu breaking away from the customary wait service. This kind of service meant that all customers can simply order their food at the counter and personally get their dimsum favorites, pay at the cashier and be on their way to enjoy the food, be it in-store or out. The senses of sight and smell were teased by the colorful, appetizing and aromatic display of dimsum dishes”, shares Dimsum Break Davao franchisee Mark Kho.

The combination of great food and simple, fast and interactive service proved to be a hit! Dimsum Break soon became the go-to place for a quick, hot, delicious and affordable meal.

Proudly Cebuano

“Dimsum Break is one of the restaurants under Harbour City Dimsum House Co., Inc. which traces its roots to its very first restaurant brand, Ding How. Opened in 1969, Ding How introduced the concept of an all-day dimsum dining concept in Cebu. The enthusiastic market acceptance and reception subsequently led to the development of the group's other brands, which include Ding Qua Qua (1987) and Harbour City (1993)”, relates Mark.

He explains that “Harbour City is the quintessential tea house concept, with dimsum dishes being wheeled straight to customers' tables in time-honored dimsum carts and trolleys.  Ding Qua Qua, on the other hand, offers the Great Dimsum Buffet, an all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner offering”.

Today, the Dimsum Break branch network has grown to 11 stores in Cebu, 1 store each in Bacolod, Tacloban, Butuan, and now Davao, for a total of 15 stores.  The Davao branch is the 20th store of the entire Harbour City Group.

Family comfort food

When visitors to Cebu ask what local favorites they should try, the Original Steamed Fried Rice is usually one of the recommendations.  After eating the dish, many of them become fans, and a stop at any Ding How, Ding Qua Qua, Harbour City and Dimsum Break branch becomes part of the itinerary on their next visit”, Mark reveals.

He narrates that “the famous Original Steamed Fried Rice was created in the kitchen of Ding How. Its rather unique name came from the way the dish is prepared.  The rice on which the sauce toppings rest is actually cooked and seasoned by itself, similar to fried rice.  Back in the day, this fried rice was already portioned in the iconic rice pots and placed in steamed cabinets.  Only when customers placed an order was the sauce toppings ladled over the rice”.

“Since the Original Steamed Fried Rice was created during a time when restaurant dining was reserved only for special occasions, Cebuanos grew up eating it.  One could say that this simple but unique dish has become Cebuano comfort food, one that evokes many a happy memory of dining with family and friends”, Mark smiles.

Dimsum in a snap!

Although it presents dimsum dining in a more contemporary and modern setup, Dimsum Break pays homage to the traditional and authentic recipes.  The Original Steamed Fried Rice is the perfect anchor that ties together all other dimsum dishes”, proudly declares Mark who is a first-time owner/franchisee of a restaurant.

“The different varieties of Shaomai (Shrimp, Quail's Egg, Mushroom, and Bacon) are made the traditional way such that with each bite you can taste pieces of meat and shrimp.  Other steamed dimsum favorites include Chicken Feet, Empress Roll and Steamed Chicken.  These dishes are perfectly paired with Ginger Sauce and Chili Sauce, all of which are made in-house”, he points out.

“For fried dimsum, the favorites are Spring Rolls, Sweet and Sour Pork, Crab Pincers, Stuffed Shrimps, Stuffed Taro and Fried Wantons.  These dishes, on the other hand, are best enjoyed with Dimsum Break's signature Sweet and Sour Sauce”, Mark continues.

“I’ve been a fan of Dimsum Break's cuisine since I was young.  Whenever I visit Cebu, I never miss going there.  I believe Dimsum Break will be a welcome addition to Davao's dining scene, and I hope Dabawenyos and their families will learn to appreciate and love the good food that Dimsum Break is known for”, enthuses Mark.

Dimsum Break is located at the Upper Ground Floor, Gaisano Mall of Davao and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. For inquiries, you may contact (0917)5323275.

"Cooking up family memories at Yakimix"
Sun.Star Davao, Oct. 24, 2015

A young man on bended knees asks for his longtime girlfriend’s hand in marriage while the diners and staff cheer enthusiastically in support.

Pulling out a saxophone, a bespectacled guy suddenly plays enchanting love songs to a charming lady during their family lunch. It was her birthday, after all, and the hubby wanted to make her day extra special by secretly requesting a friend to serenade her. This sweet gesture surely earned brownie points for the thoughtful mister.

Certainly, these are not everyday scenes you would encounter in a buffet restaurant. But, in two years, Yakimix Davao has been a happy witness to countless family occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, reunions, graduations, and even holiday get-togethers like Christmas and New Year.

Eating has always been and still is a source of bonding among friends and most especially, families.  We truly believe that it is during mealtime when we sit down together to enjoy food and each other’s company that we get to bond, connect and learn from one another”, says Yakimix Davao CEO Wilson Bangayan.

“Nothing beats spending time eating with family and friends as we talk face to face and share stories, more so in this digital age, when communication has been reduced to sending messages via gadgets.  And here at Yakimix, we advocate this by creating those precious moments into a more unforgettable dining experience with our fusion of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Filipino food”, he continues.

Wilson is truly grateful that Yakimix Davao has been doing well in the market for the past two years. He observes that Dabawenyos keep coming back for the experience of personally grilling Yakimix’s wide selection of pre-marinated beef, chicken and seafood dishes.

Their built-in smokeless grill located at every table is such a hit because it does not leave customers with “smokey”-smelling clothes. The name, Yakimix, is derived from the Japanese word, “yaki”, which means, grilled, broiled or pan-fried and the word “mix” or put together.

In addition, their Hongkong chef introduces new dishes on a regular basis, especially during holidays when a lot of people from out-of-town visit Davao City. These new specialties include their lip-smacking Imbao Shell Soup, Steamed Scallop with Garlic and Vermicelli, Sizzling Tuna, Pan Grilled Chicken with Laurel Leaves and Sauteed Tofu with Shredded Chicken.

Aside from these, the Spicy Crispy Shrimp, Crab Sotanghon, Korean Chapchae, Lechon Kawali, Grilled BBQ with different Asian sauces, Fresh Salmon and Tuna, and the Make-Your-Own Sukiyaki Soup remain as the loyal customers’ all-time favorites.

For our anniversary promo, Yakimix Davao is giving out a Food Lovers Privilege Card worth Php880 which can be used for their succeeding Yakimix dining experience.  For every Php2,000 worth of meals, the customer will be given this card, which will entitle him to a 10% discount for cash transactions and 5% discount for credit card transactions – on his succeeding visits.  This promo has been extended until the privilege cards are consumed”, announces Wilson.

Yakimix Davao is located at the 2ndFloor of Abreeza Mall, J.P. Laurel Ave., Davao City.  Contact details:  (082)-2853333; (082)-3212333; 0917-3053333; 0925-7430333. Operating hours:  Lunch -11:30am – 3:00pm; Dinner - 5:00 -10:00pm. Rates:  Weekday Lunch – Php 499;  Weekday Dinner and Weekends – Php 599. Children 3-4.5 feet are given a discounted rate of Php 299 and free dining for children below 3 feet.

“Apl of their eyes”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 7, 2015

In this world of “me, myself and I”, it is truly heartwarming to know that an internationally renowned Grammy Award-winning artist such as the Black Eyed Peas’ Apl.de.ap would choose to generously give back to the Philippines through his Apl.de.ap Foundation International.

Admirably, education is the first priority of the foundation. It has built a music studio and computer lab in the two schools that Apl attended in his hometown of Sapang Bato, Pampanga: Sapang Bato National High School and Holy Angels University. These facilities provide opportunities for disadvantaged Filipino children to unleash their musical and technology talents. The initiative also includes the development of teacher training modules, a mentoring program and educational scholarships.

Currently, the foundation sponsors 14 scholars at the Angeles University and participates in the Department of Education’s initiative to build new schools especially in far flung and hard-to-reach areas of the country. To date, it has built 15 new schools including one in the war-torn area of Zamboanga.

Recently, Apl.de.ap came to Davao City bearing good news. Through his Apl.de.ap Foundation, “The Campaign for Filipino Children” was launched at the Southern Philippines Medical Center. The foundation’s first healthcare initiative is to tackle the issue of eyesight preservation, specifically addressing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), one cause of childhood blindness in the Philippines which affects thousands of children annually.

Apl, being born with nystagmus (a condition of involuntary eye movement that results in limited vision), can very well relate to this campaign. He is considered legally blind.

The campaign’s approach is “to assist the medical community in the Philippines through five regional/provincial hospitals to increase the capacities of these regions to adequately diagnose ROP, an affliction among pre-term infants that can cause lifelong blindness if not addressed within 48 hours of birth/diagnosis”.

During the campaign launch, Apl.de.ap and his collaborators donated a state-of-the-art brand new Retcam TM Shuttle diagnostic equipment to the SPMC to properly screen ROP. The cost of the machine? A whopping US$125,000 or approximately Php 5.6 million.

The notable list of collaborators for this campaign includes the Philippine Academy of Opthalmology; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles through its Vision Center-Dr. Thomas C. Lee; WesternUnion.com as presenting sponsor; and Knights Templar Eye Foundation.

After the launch, the members of the media were able to have our chance to interview Apl privately.

I asked Apl to share a little information about his upcoming children’s book under the “Dream Big” series by my friend Ms. Yvette Fernandez.

“Basically, Yvette and I just hung out and I just told her my life story about growing up; farming; coming from humble beginnings; and delivering ‘uling’ (charcoal) throughout the neighborhood for my mom. She would package them and I was the delivery boy. I used to deliver water which I pumped, two gallons of water with the ‘timba’ (pail). So I would deliver water in my neighborhood for a peso per delivery. The book tells my story growing up in Sapang Bato”, Apl smiles.

For someone so accomplished in his impressive career as a rapper, record producer and celebrity judge of The Voice Phils., I am awed beyond measure on how Apl is still so down-to-earth and proud of his roots.

If there is a true star I would like my children to look up to, it would be this guy who has significantly changed the lives of many young Filipinos, making him the “Apl of their eyes”.

“Lifestyle and food mecca at Felcris Centrale”
Sun.Star Davao, Nov. 21, 2015

“Simple but elegant; international but uniquely Filipino; and comfortable yet trailblazing”. Essentially, this is the message that Felcris Centrale’s Chimes Specialty Boutique wants to convey in its new logo design.

“Chimes continues to uphold its founders’ vision of providing Dabawenyos a shopping haven for one-of-a-kind finds and high quality items”, says Cindy Yap, Junior Vice President of the Felcris Group of Companies. “True to its origins, this upscale specialty store is the place to go for the discriminating shopper who fancies seeing the world without leaving the comforts of home and family”, she adds.

This one-stop lifestyle store offers “a wide variety of products, ranging from Japan’s Shiseido cosmetics; the United States’ Clinique cosmetic and skin care line; Victoria Secret and Bath and Body Works fragrances and body pampering products; Brazil’s Ipanema and Grendha footwear; Thailand’s Santas towels and lines; and Paris’ Longchamp Bags to its very own clothing line, Canvas”, Cindy shares.

Joining these world-class brands with the opening of its newest store are the clothing lines of renowned local designers such as Maureen Disini, Charina Sarte, Regilioso, K & Company, Florence Fling, and the fabulously chic accessories of Aranaz and Jo of Joyce Oreña.

At the recent launch of the Chimes Specialty Boutique, the charming and witty fashion icon Tessa Prieto-Valdes delightfully hosted the stylish affair. VIPs who especially flew in from Manila to grace the occasion included fashion stylist to the stars Liz Uy; top fashion blogger Camille Co; “Asia’s Next Top Model” guest judge and beauty specialist Lourd Ramos; Under Armour endorser and actor Rocco Nacino; among others.

But, the most recognized and fussed over celebrity who came to the event was no less than the guest of honor, our beloved Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who gamely posed for countless photos with the invitees who could never get enough of him. Admitting to be a loyal patron of the Felcris Group of Companies since its early days, he thanked the Yap family for believing in Davao; creating job opportunities for the people while offering premium products sourced locally and from across the globe.

After shopping at Chimes Specialty Boutique, an unforgettable meal at Perch Modern Kitchen + Bar, which nests at the second floor of the Al Fresco area of the Felcris Centrale, is an absolute must.

As one enters Perch, you will be welcomed by its wooden and rustic feel. The bar has a character on its own with black background and gold borders.

Chef Raffy Sunico, head chef of the Manila-based gastropub, LOCALE, leads this gourmet venture in collaboration with Perch’s own Chef AJ Reyes.

My family and I went to Perch on a drizzling Friday night to unwind with good eats while enjoying the relaxing music of Acoustic Fridays.

Armed with our insatiable appetites, for starters, we indulged in Perch’s scrumptious Truffle Fries -- chunky and crispy batonnet potato fries in truffle paste and truffle oil followed by the heavenly Candied Bacon, 12-hour smoked candied bacon baked to perfection. The mouthwatering Roasted Bone Marrow may be sinful but worth every calorie and cholesterol!

The perfectly brined Whiskey Barbeque Chops which is French-cut pork chops grilled and glazed with Perch’s special whiskey bourbon barbeque sauce and the Perch Rising Sun Angus Burger Steak, grilled Angus beef patty in a nest-like bed of potato hash topped with raw egg yolk, were equally satisfying.

Other delectable must-try items on the menu included the Seafood Pasta, Angus Basil Meatball Pasta, Truffsilog, Broccoli Cheese Rice, Three Cheese Truffle Pizza, Chicken Broccoli and Cheese and Panko Crusted Oyster Sisig.

With Chimes Specialty Boutique and Perch Modern Kitchen + Bar, Felcris Centrale seals its claim to be the lifestyle mecca as well as foodies’ paradise of Davao!

“Bucket list: Bacolod”
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 5, 2015

Authentic Ilonggo specialties and unlimited sweets…aahhh…it has always been part of my bucket list to set foot in the sugary soils of Bacolod to indulge in these.

This food trip dream finally came true recently when my family and I had a few days off during the school break.

Upon landing at the New Bacolod Silay Airport, we were met by an energetic group of MassKara dancers who warmly welcomed convention delegates on the same flight. We were elated to take a pose with these colorful MassKara icons even if it was past the staging of the famed festival.

Since the airport was on the way to the heritage sites, our efficient driver, Mang Atoy, suggested that we proceed to our first stop, Balay Negrense, in Silay City.

Silay is the second city in the Philippines to be recognized as a “Museum City”, after Vigan in Ilocos Sur. It has more than thirty heritage houses acknowledged as historical landmarks.

The Balay Negrense is the first museum to be established in the province of Negros Occidental. It was originally the ancestral house of Victor F. Gaston, the son of a prominent French sugarcane plantation owner. Our friendly guide toured us around the different parts of the house which showcased the grand lifestyle of a late 19th-century elite family in Negros.

Next on our heritage tour was the Bernardino-Jalandoni Museum or more popularly known as the “Pink House”; pink being the unconventional color of the structure’s facade.

Here, the engaging tales of our amiable guide made the stories of these wealthy Negrenses alive for my inquisitive kids. The kitchen area with its prinsa de paa and prinsa de mano for pressing clothes; and ice chest which used to contain ice imported all the way from Europe as electricity then was wanting, captivated my daughters.

The amusing anecdote about how one would know if he or she was a welcome guest at the house elicited chuckles from my curious brood. The guide explained that the answer lay in the chocolate drink being offered. If you were served “tsokolate ah”, a watered and thin chocolate drink then you were an “unwanted” visitor for “tsokolate eh”, a thick and rich cocoa concoction, was reserved exclusively for special guests.

After our back-to-back heritage house tour, we dropped by El Ideal Bakery, a Silay institution which began in the 1920s, to have a quick snack of steaming batchoy and puto cheese.

On the way to Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City to see the Church of the Angry Christ, we were amazed by the endless fields of sugarcanes. Even under the intense heat of the sun, sacadas or sugarcane workers, continued to harvest sugarcanes much to the delight and awe of my grade school daughter who just studied the regions in the Visayas for her Social Studies class.  Personally, I was proud to be able to show to her a glimpse of real-life hardworking sacadas from her lesson.

Back in Silay, we were just in time for the Manuel Hofileña Ancestral Museum to open its doors to the public for the afternoon visitors as the master of the house, a direct descendant of the distinguished ilustrado, Mr. Ramon Hofileña, awakened from his siesta. The museum is the very first inhabited house in Silay to be declared a national historical landmark.

We learned that that Mr. Hofileña, who is in his 80s, still personally acts as the house tour guide.  However, during our visit, Mr. Hofileña was tired from his morning activities and turned the task to his staff who was equally fascinating narrating to us in detail the family’s heirloom pieces and remarkable art collection while divulging some interesting trivia on the side.

In Talisay City, we visited The Ruins, the city’s most picturesque landmark. It was once a majestic mansion owned by Don Mariano Lacson and built in honor of his first wife, Maria Braga. Unfortunately, the mansion was burned during World War 2 by guerilla fighters to prevent it from being used as a Japanese headquarters. However, thanks to its oversized steel bars and premium concrete material, the foundation remains standing to this day, becoming a romantic venue for weddings and other memorable occasions.

Still on our first day and pleasantly surprised at how much we covered by 4:30 p.m., we checked in at Avenue Suites along Lacson Street.  After a bit of rest, we headed to 18thSt. Palapala for our sumptuous seafood dinner, followed by a sweet splurge at Calea Pastries and Coffee, a venue which we did a double take as will be explained.

The following day, we headed off to Iloilo via a one-hour Supercat ferry ride where we visited Museo Iloilo, Jaro Cathedral, Molo Cathedral, Iloilo River Esplanade, among others. Lunch at Tatoy’s Manokan and Seafoods with its divine baked oysters was one of our best meals during the Negros trip. Before sunset, we went back to the ferry terminal toting De Ocampo’s barquillos and pinasugbo as well as butterscotch bars from Biscocho Haus.

Returning to Bacolod in time for dinner, we had a splendid meal at Bob’s, a well-loved family resto celebrating its 50th year anniversary. My eldest daughter and I capped the night savoring Felicia’s heavenly macarons and moist chocolate cake.

Our third day consisted of visits to the Negros Museum and the Negros Showroom coupled with more eating at Aboy’s Restaurant and Chicken House as well as pasalubong shopping for our loved ones. Highly recommended by Bacolod-based friend Tina Lim-Flores to be brought home were mouthwatering treats such as Virgie’s piaya and caramel and mango tarts; Quan’s napoleones; and Pendy’s half moon.

As the day was about to end, I treated my girls to a relaxing massage at Bacolod Spa, conveniently located at our hotel. Afterwards, my high school daughter hanged out with her Bacolod friends at Calea. I, too, couldn’t resist but have a Calea part deux moment with my hubby. We did not dare say goodbye to Bacolod without another bite of their melt-in-your mouth white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce!

This was my kind of vacation---easy-breezy and with plenty of time to spare for eating and exploring. Oh, Bacolod, my family and I shall be back and hopefully, it will be real soon!

City of Smiles….check!

“Skin talk with Skin Doctors”
Sun.Star Davao, Dec. 19, 2015
In 1998, a group of four board-certified dermatologists decided to band together with the goal of giving Dabawenyos access to the newest technology being offered then, which was lasers.
Flash forward to 2015, Skin Doctors Dermatology and Laser Center is now operating clinics at the original branch at Gaisano Mall of Davao and at Quinque by Skin Doctors at SM Lanang Premier.
Let’s meet the dynamic lady dermatologists behind Skin Doctors. All of them are either Diplomates or Fellows of the Philippine Dermatological Society.
Dr. Ma. Pacita S. Belisario is a graduate of the UP College of Medicine. She took her residency training at the University of the Philippines-Phil. General Hospital (UP-PGH) and is a past training officer and incoming chair of the Department of Dermatology of the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).
On the other hand, Dr. Ma. Assumpta Cecilia R. Serrano is a graduate of the UP College of Medicine and completed her residency training at the UP-PGH.

SKIN TALK
*How do you manage your time between your respective clinics and Skin Doctors?
It’s all about time management. Clinic schedules in private clinics are done in such a way to accommodate the schedule of the doctor in the mall. There’s also a lot of sacrifice of weekends with the family.
*Nowadays, kids seem to have a lot of skin problems such as dry and sensitive skin, allergies and the like. Why do you think this is rampant? How can we prevent it?
Allergies may be genetic (in-born) in nature and thus, hard to prevent. A number of skin allergies though are caused by chemicals found in fragrances, or certain preservatives of some soaps, shampoos and lotions. Using a baby-friendly, mild, unscented product will help prevent allergies if a child has sensitive skin. Using a lotion properly (more than twice a day) will also help.
*Moms these days are quite busy. Some of them do not have the luxury of time for treatments. What do you think should be a mom’s daily regimen to keep fine lines and age spots at bay?
Sun protection factor (SPF). Sun protection is the key word since the ultraviolet rays of the sun cause wrinkles and age spots. This should always be a part of a mom’s daily regimen especially since we live in the tropics.
*For teens undergoing puberty, how soon can they start visiting a dermatologist for their acne concerns?
As soon as they see anything on their skin that concerns them.
What are the latest treatments and services offered at Skin Doctors?
E-matrix is a sublative fractional radiofrequency device which offers scar treatment and is able to tighten skin as well. It has minimal down time with lasting effects for tightening and a permanent effect on scar improvement.
Fractional CO2 laser treatment is offered to minimize pores, smoothen skin and get rid of acne scars permanently.
Ultrapeel uses platinum instead of industrial diamonds for removing the upper layer of your skin and leaves you with a fresh, lighter, new layer of skin.
In addition, a wide array of discounts and freebies await patients who will avail of our latest offering, the Skin Doctors Coupon Club.
Skin Doctors Dermatology and Laser Center is at the 4th level of the Gaisano Mall of Davao, J.P. Laurel Ave., Davao City with tel. no. 2274525 and mobile number 09228628769. Quinque by Skin Doctors can be found at the basement of SM Lanang Premier with telephone number 2858695 and mobile 09228628768.
