“Davao girl scouts join int’l. camp in NZ”
Sun.Star Davao, Feb. 22, 2014

Stella Maris Academy of Davao girl scouts Zoe Alessandra Huang, Samantha Nuñez, Claudine Angelika Barroso and Pia Angelika Puentespina together with girl leaders Denisa Nenita Navales and Marina Mesina of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines-Davao Council, represented the country in the F14ME International Ranger Camp held at Wesley College, Pukekohe, Auckland, New Zealand last month.

Three hundred thirty scouts and girl guides from various countries which included Malaysia, Singapore, Cook Islands, Fiji, Australia and different parts of New Zealand joined the camp.

During the opening ceremony, there was a cultural presentation highlighting the represented countries’ traditional songs and dances. One of the most applauded performances of the talent night was the Davao delegation’s upbeat Bagobo dance.

The girls had the time of their lives with the “Flaming Challenge” where each color group had to undergo exciting team-building activities and physical challenges creating the chance to meet and know the other international scouts.

On the fourth day, the “Try-it Day” had the dynamic young ladies choosing new activities such as Aquaerobics, Archery, Barista Training, Beginner's Belly Dancing, Box Fit, Circus Skills, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Contemporary Dance, Cookies and Marshmallow Pops, Fitness Fun, Flower Power, Laser Skirmish, Massage Therapy, Orienteering, Pamper Experience, Photography, Raft Survivor, Self Defense Skills, SNAG Golf, What to Wear - Color Consultation, What to Wear - Style, Yogalates and Zumba/Laughter Yoga.

On that same day, the girl scouts had their closing ceremony and disco party during the evening.

Before the girl scouts flew to New Zealand, they had to pre-select off-site adventures in their registration forms. Based on their choices, the girls were divided into groups for their 3-day Off-Site Adventure.

The memorable adventures were Auckland Allsorts, Awesome Auckland, Canyoning Adventure, Completely Kayaking, Just Dessert, Kawau Capers, Middle Earth in Matamata, Mud Slingers, Over the Rainbow Auckland, Pinnacles & Pioneers, Ride & Glide, Splash 'n Dash Goat Island, Tauranga Wonderland and Waitomo Blackwater Glow.

The myriad of activities showcased the wonders of the Kiwi nation through biking, caving, swimming, kayaking, hiking, abseiling and sailing.

On the final day of their camp, all teams from the various adventure groups gathered together again to bid each other farewell. It was also the day that some of the girl scouts who opted to join the home stay program met their foster families.

The four girl scouts from the Philippines and other international girl scouts were divided into groups of 2 or 3 for their home stay.

The home stay program was truly an unforgettable experience where the participants enjoyed first-hand the hospitality and generosity of their New Zealand foster families.

Three of the Davao girl scouts, Zoe, Claudine and Samantha who also joined the Giggles Camp in the United Kingdom last July 2013, had nothing but praises for their New Zealand scouting experience.

“We could definitely say that this New Zealand camp was different from the UK camp. The camp was full of simultaneous activities. It gave us another chance to meet new friends, see a unique culture and experience adventures. How grateful and blessed we are to be part of another incredible and priceless journey!”, they exclaim.

“We are very thankful to our parents for their unending support. We also thank our teachers, school administration, the GSP Davao Council and the GSP National headquarters for allowing us to join this wonderful encampment. Lastly, we thank the Lord for guiding us the whole time and for never stopping us from the thing we love to do – camping”, the girls express.

Truly, as Zoe, who happens to be my eldest niece, reflects, “the best things in life can't be learned from books alone. They are also learned from experience”.

“Dream Big -Year 2”
Sun.Star Davao, March 8, 2014

The Davao Christian High School Parents-Teachers Fellowship (DCHS PTF) recently staged the “Dream Big-Year 2” musical concert with the theme “Love in Any Language” at the DCHS Auditorium.

This year’s highly successful concert showcased the exemplary talents of the DCHS Orchestra; DCHS Choir; and the DCHS Preschool, Grade School and High School Bands.

DCHS’s Practical Music Course (PMC) began in 2009 through its collaboration with Zion Praise Music, Inc.

Starting from Grade 6, the DCHS students could choose the musical instruments they wanted to learn such as piano, guitar, violin, drums, keyboards, cello, saxophone and flute.

“Our goal is that every Christian child worships the Lord through excellent music. We aim to train and fully develop God’s gift of music in every child and use this for His greater glory”, says Jermaine Misterio, conductor of ZPMI.

The ZPMI, which has been helping schools in Luzon and Mindanao strengthen their music curriculum since 2002, has held countless concerts, recitals and music camps participated by thousands of their students.

Together with the DCHS Choir, which won both 1st place in the Koro sa Pasko (Pasko Fiesta sa Dabaw 2013) and Christmas Musical (Chorale Group Song and Dance Competition), respectively, the DCHS Orchestra came up with an impressive repertoire which wowed the audience.

From well-loved tunes such as “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika”, “The Prayer”, “Got to Believe in Magic”, “Without You”, “Paraiso”, “Love in Any Language” to “Here I Am to Worship” and “Frozen” medleys, the appreciative guests clapped and cheered in awe as they listened to the beautiful songs one after the other.

On the other hand, the DCHS Bands played with absolute gusto their interpretations of “Adonai”, “Our God”, “Where is the Love?”, “Love is the Answer” and “You are Good”.

Equally remarkable were the Preschool and Grade School Bands with their charming rendition of “Up, Up with Jesus”, “Heaven in My Heart” and “What a Beautiful Country”. They were magnificently trained by Teacher Jay Rivera and her team.

Exhibiting their piano prowess were Sojin Park (“Merry Go Round of Life”); Sharcele Galope (“Suna No Oshiro”);  Shannen Meeka Lim (“Sonatina Op. 36 No. 3’); Hayeon Jeong (“Canon Variations”) and Arvin Ong (“Claire de Lune”).

By sharing their amazing talents, the students were able to help raise a substantial amount for the purchase of additional musical instruments for the DCHS Music Room, the beneficiary of the concert-for-a-cause.

Indeed, at such a young age, the DCHS students’ musical gifts became their instruments for God’s greater glory!

Bravissimo!

“Forever summer”
Sun.Star Davao, March 22, 2014

Summertime as a child will hold a special place in my heart forever.

How can I ever forget the thrill of balancing my bike for the first time in Grade 2? Swimming lessons at the old Beach Club was extra memorable because of the snacks we would order after each session.

Having my first ballet recital at Locsin Dance Workshop gave me the jitters but it was exhilarating nonetheless; while art workshops at the then Learning Center of the Arts taught me the basics of sketching and painting.

My piano lessons were admittedly not the highlights of my summer. But, I am thankful for the many hours spent playing new pieces valuably enhancing my discipline and focus.

Back in high school while I was vacationing in Manila, I invited my cousin to enroll with me in a six-week Personality Development Course which culminated with a fashion show at the Philippine Plaza Hotel. Every time I would look at the photos, I could not help but laugh and cringe at our ‘80s fashion and make-up.

I may have been a jack (or jill) of all trades and master of none. But, boy, these were fun memories that lingered in my mind to this day!

Now, as a parent, aside from letting my kids engage in free play, I introduce them to a variety of summer workshops.  I wish the same for other parents - bestowing the gift of learning to their kids.

I proudly present to you my personal compilation of Davao City’s Kiddie Summer Workshops (Year 7)!

“All set for summer at Chimes”
Sun.Star Davao, April 5, 2014

Even with a lot of big malls sprouting around the city, I still gravitate towards Chimes when it comes to high quality value-for-money finds. I totally adore its tasteful mix of well-known local and international brands that make every visit worth my time.

Be ready for summer as Chimes introduces its latest offerings in skin care, eyewear and fashion to Dabawenyos!

First in its line-up is the skin-caring makeup Happy Skin which is luxuriously infused with special skincare ingredients such as Japanese tea leaf, cherry blossom, hyaluronic acid, and argan oil, to name a few.

Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez, co-founder of Happy Skin who is a well-respected authority in the beauty industry, explains that “all their key products are sourced and made in Japan because they recognize the importance of skincare in this beauty capital”.

“Happy Skin is the first makeup line that offers an entire range of skin-caring makeup,” Jacqe says. “It was especially created for women who want to look naturally beautiful, but want to make sure that their skin is also cared for. It’s for women who don't want to compromise on beauty!”, she adds.

Happy Skin’s first set of products in the market, include essential makeup items wittily named as Shut Up and Kiss Me lippie; Don’t Get Mad, Get Even liquid and powder foundations; Second Skin Créme; Eye Need A Miracle concealer; Get Cheeky With Me blush; and Eye Am Here To Stay gel and felt liners. Each product name and design was painstakingly thought of and perfected to bring out a little smile in everyone.

Jacqe and her business partner, model and beauty columnist Rissa Mananquil-Trillo, assure that they are very hands-on and test every single sample until they achieve a product that will make women happy as they pucker up, conceal and blend their skin to perfection!

Next in Chime’s summer must-haves is Sunnies by Charlie, an independent eyewear and lifestyle brand based in Manila. It was founded in 2013 with the vision of providing quality eyewear at affordable costs.

Sunnies’ successful Davao launch at Chimes is a testament that the brand has created a cult following. The promotion for the 100 Sunnies’ give-away stated that it would start at 10 am but as early as 8 am, there were almost 200 students and young professionals eagerly lining up at Chimes.

What made the launch extra memorable was the presence of Georgina Wilson who is one of the most recognized faces and social media authorities in the Philippines. Georgina serves as Sunnies’ director of marketing.

Sunnies offers curated eyewear with UV protection with prices starting at an unbelievably low price of Php 249. From unisex, retro-inspired and classic styles, Sunnies has a pair to suit its discriminating customers.

And last but not the least is my personal favorite Plains and Prints. Even my soon-to-be- teen daughter loves their dresses!

Recently, Plains and Prints released its highly-anticipated Spring Summer 2014 Collection in collaboration with Rhett Eala, one of the country’s top fashion designers.

This season’s designs “take inspiration from various tropical elements and artistic moods that embody the fun-loving yet smart and sophisticated look of the brand”.

The exquisite Spring Summer 2014 collection consists of its Water Collection; Air Collection; Swimsuit and Cover-Ups; Summer Dresses; Saint Tropez; Domestic Bliss; and Art Nouveau.

In a press statement, celebrity, fashion icon and brand endorser Anne Curtis expresses her love for the collections. “I will always be the fun-loving, girly girl that I am. But I’d like my audience to know that I’ve grown up and become more mature, too. That’s why this year, I’ve decided to dress more responsibly”, she shares.

Undoubtedly, Anne’s personality and lifestyle “reflect what the work-wear brand stands for—fresh and fashionable”.

Indeed, this collaboration between the brand’s new endorser Anne Curtis and designer par-excellance Rhett Eala is yet another Perfect Partnership by Plains and Prints.

“Building character at Bright Seeds”
Sun.Star Davao, April 26, 2014

Like seeds in the garden, children need to be lovingly nurtured to grow with all of their best potential. Aside from a supportive family, the right choice for a preschool is crucial in ensuring that kids have a strong foundation not only for the ‘big school’ but for the real world as well.

A fresh and welcome addition to the preschools in Davao is the Bright Seeds Preschool which recently opened its doors to the public with the dynamic Maria Lourdes Victoria Tionko-Imperial or simply ‘Teacher Lea’ as the school directress.

Teacher Lea has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, both with distinctions, from Assumption College in Makati City. For many years, she also worked with the preschool department of an exclusive private school in Makati City.

“While teaching, I was assigned to various leadership roles with my work which included running the preschool department. Throughout those years teaching in Manila, I learned and appreciated the importance of integrating values in the curriculum because it builds positive character among learners”, Teacher Lea, a mom of two young boys, shares.

Growing character

“Character is what defines a child. It is what leads him with his choices. A positive character builds positive action. We believe that a child learns best when he is using his five senses (see, hear, smell, taste and touch); thus, allowing him to discover, explore and develop his character”, Teacher Lea explains.

SEEDS is an acronym for Sensory Experience for Early Developmental Success which is inspired by Pestalozzi’s educational philosophy---“learning by head, hearts and hands”.
Knowledge, skills and values are imparted through Bright Seeds’ 4H Foundation of Learning, namely:

HEAD (Intellectual Development)– Concepts and knowledge are shared through sensory experience activities by using real materials for the child to explore and by allowing him to learn through the use of his five senses (see, hear, smell, taste and touch).

HANDS (Physical Development)– Physical development is as important as the intellectual and emotional/values development. Included in the activities are large and small movement skills which are the foundation of the child’s practical and creative activities.

HEART (Emotional/Values Development)– Through their character building program, the school combines lessons with values and introduces the recognition of God’s love in everything that surrounds us.

HARMONY (Social Development) – Relating well with others is an essential key to a child’s success. Cooperative learning and play are used in activities to allow kids to discover his talents and to respect the talents of others as well.

From seedlings to bloomers

This coming school-year, Bright Seeds Preschool will be offering classes daily with thematically-based activities and lessons. With a corresponding theme for each month, skills and concepts are integrated to the fun activities.

“We believe in consistency of the home and the school. That’s why we involve parents and nannies as well by having constant feedbacks and giving seminars so that there will be continuity with what is being taught in school”, Teacher Lea enthuses.

Classes offered are the following:

Seedlings for 2 to 2.5 years old; Number of students: three; With one teacher and one classroom nanny; Time: 10:15 a.m.-12:15 noon (*Note: Seedlings class also offer thrice a week classes);

Sprouts for 2.6 to 3.5 years old; Number of students: twelve; With two teachers and one classroom nanny; Time: 10:15 a.m.-12:15 noon;

Buds for 3.6 to 4.5 years old; Number of students: 15; With two teachers and one classroom nanny; Time: 1:30 p.m.-3:40 p.m.; and

Bloomers for 4.6 to 5.5 years old; Number of students: 15; With one teacher and one assistant teacher; Time: 7:45 a.m.-10:05 a.m.

In addition, Bright Seeds Preschool is offering summer classes for Toddlers Playgroup (Songs, Stories, Arts & Crafts, Games, Sensory Play) ages 2 – 3 years old; May 6 – 24 (TThS); 10:30 a.m.-12 noon; Fee: P3,950; and Reading Enrichment Program (Sensory Reading Activities) ages 4-6 years old; May 5-23 (Daily); 9:00am-10:00 a.m.; Fee: P3,750.

“Our vision of a Bright Seeds Preschool learner is someone who responds with confidence and certainty even with an ever changing future through a supreme holistic program. We invite Dabawenyos to experience Bright Seeds and let us help your children bloom!”, Teacher Lea smiles.

For inquiries, Bright Seeds Preschool is at Doña Vicenta Road, Doña Vicenta Village, Davao City (near Chowking, across Victoria Plaza); Cellphone numbers: (0917)5400988 and telephone number 3003286.

“Adding color to my life”
Sun.Star Davao, May 10, 2014

For my birthday celebration this year, we had a family weekend staycation (or nearcation, for some) at the hip and vibrant Park Inn by Radisson Davao, which celebrated its 1st year anniversary recently. It was the perfect getaway, a home away from home and yet so close to our very own home.

Upon arriving at the hotel’s well-appointed and multi-hued lobby, I was immediately greeted by warm smiles and cheerful birthday greetings from the friendly front office staff. They must have been advised by the hotel’s charming public relations officer Meg Sta. Ines about my birthday. It was Meg, also a lifestyle columnist at another local newspaper, who invited my family for a staycation at Park Inn for two superb days.

We were ushered into our room on the 5th floor which had an incredible view of the former Lanang Golf and Country Club golf course and the Davao Gulf. While looking at the expansive greenery, my hubby Gary waxed sentimental as he recalled his many fond adventures with buddies at this 18-hole golf course.

Beautifully displayed on the table/workstation was a surprise birthday cake from Park Inn, along with a scrumptious fruit platter. What a much appreciated and thoughtful gesture from the management and staff of the hotel!

The standard room we stayed in was cozy and comfortable for our family of four. I adored the pops of color on the wall and in the different parts of the hotel that fittingly reflected Park Inn’s tagline, “Adding Color to Life”.

Our king-sized memory foam bed was very relaxing that the kids instantly settled in, TV switched to their favorite cable TV channel while savoring the aircon on full blast. As for me, logging into my social media accounts never felt so easy, thanks to Park Inn’s complimentary and high speed internet connection.

The birthday greetings through Facebook and text messages came one after the other. And, just like what I have done for the past few years, I thanked each and every friend who remembered my birthday---even if I had to cover more than 300 greetings and comments for the next few days.

As the afternoon progressed, the kids were raring to swim at the hotel pool. But, when my husband Gary checked his bag, he discovered that he accidentally left his board shorts at home. No time to fret! We swiftly went to SM Lanang Premier. The mall was conveniently connected to a covered walkway from the hotel. We came back in a flash with new board shorts, chips and drinks in tow, ready to jump into the waiting pool!

As expected, the pool was much-wanted and inviting especially with the scorching summer heat. While the hubby and kids swam leisurely in the pool, I stayed at the pool bar and treated myself to a cosmopolitan cocktail. It was my birthday, after all. Yay! Cheers to me!

In the evening, I hosted a birthday dinner with my Huang family and Teves in-laws at SM Lanang Premier’s Hog’s Breath Café.  Again, the very short distance to the mall felt like we were staying at a place with the biggest ‘backyard’.  After dinner, my youngest daughter Chelsea and her energetic cousins ran in wild abandon at the spacious open area where they marveled at the delightful fountain show.

With their energies drained, the kids decided to call it a night and we headed back to the hotel via the walkway.

When we entered our room, we were in for a sweet treat. There were delectable chocolates served daintily on a plate with a good night note from the hotel.

The king-sized bed could ably fit my husband, 8-year old daughter and I while my tween daughter excitedly set up her pull-out sofa bed right beside the window. In just under an hour, we were off to dreamland.

The following morning, I programmed my alarm at 4:30 a.m. and woke up my eldest child Anicka. She was going to cheer for her good friend Oona who joined the Team Titans anniversary marathon. SM Lanang Premier conveniently served as the event’s jump off and end points.

Park Inn is truly ideal for those who advocate an active lifestyle. Aside from the hotel’s fitness gym, guests can run or jog at SM Lanang Premier’s 950-linear meter long Joggers’ Lane. From our room window, it was absolutely delightful to see people use this popular spot to jog in the morning or in the evening after work.

We had our power breakfast at the hotel’s RBG Bar and Grill. Breakfast is something our family never ever skips. We were glad that the breakfast buffet spread at the hotel satiated our hunger. There was a wide array of choices—from congee, noodle soup, cold cuts, green salad, cheese, egg, buns, rolls, pancakes, cereal, sausages, dilis, fresh fruits, among others at only P550 per person. Children under 12 years old get to eat at the breakfast buffet at 50% off.

During breakfast, I saw several out-of-town guests who were delegates from a national convention held at the nearby SMX Convention Center. They also brought their families with them for a few days of business with pleasure.

Our heavy breakfast turned brunch made us sleepy and lethargic. So, when we returned to our room we indulged in a much-deserved snooze.

Recharged from our nap, we were able to shop again at the mall to purchase some summer essentials that we needed for our upcoming vacation overseas. The kids ended the afternoon with a heavenly dip at the pool.

Normally, when our family stays at hotels, we get to enjoy the room and facilities only after a long and tiring day of sightseeing or work. Our chillaxing shop-eat-swim-sleep staycation was indeed a welcome change that became a fantastic bonding experience for our small family.
At the end of our two-day respite, we felt refreshed when we returned to our home and workplace.

Turning a year older became extra colorful and exciting with my fun-filled birthday weekend staycation made doubly special by Park Inn by Radisson Davao!

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom Lolita, mom-in-law Ester, sisters-in-law Pat, Maricel, Eileen and Lerlen; my mommy friends and to all my ‘Mom-About-Town’ mommy readers!

"Mother’s Garden"

“My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life its start.

She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem.

And, when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enough--
But not too much because she knew
I'd need to stand up strong and tough.

Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong--
Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.

I am my Mother's garden.
I am her legacy-
And, I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me.”

“Issa’s starry, starry night”
Sun.Star Davao, May 24, 2014

It’s no mystery why people are naturally drawn to Isabella Camille Uy Calixto. Her magnetic personality, jovial nature and charisma could make anyone feel comfortable in an instant.

Currently a BS in Industrial Engineering student at De La Salle University in Taft, Manila, Issa manages to be on the Dean’s List in spite of her involvement in the Engineering Batch Student Government as Vice Chairperson for Creatives and SANTUGON, a socio-political party.

In high school, Issa was a consistent gold honor student at Davao Christian High School. In addition, the charming young lady was formerly the news and feature writer for their school paper; Student Council officer; DCHS Chorale member; and an active Girl Scout who joined international jamborees.

Issa recently celebrated her 18th birthday with an Asteria-themed party at the Northcrest Clubhouse attended by her dearest family and friends.

It was only after the Christmas holidays that Issa realized that she wanted to have a debut in her hometown. With roughly ten weeks of preparation, Issa and the whole family composed of her loving parents Coca-Cola executive Jiggs Calixto and businesswoman-mom Irene; elder sister Nikki and younger brother Gian came up with a fabulous fete fit for a goddess!

Asteria

“Asteria is the Greek translation of the word stars. I used that word since I originally wanted an outdoor party, where guests could stargaze and just appreciate the spectacular night sky. Aside from that, Asteria is also the name of the Greek goddess of the stars. I wanted to feel like a goddess on that special night”, Issa shares.

“Since Asteria means stars, I stitched the letter I for Issa, using embroidery thread and made it look like a constellation. Moreover, I only played with the colors black, white and gold to keep it simple”, the debutante describes her invitation. Issa has always been the artist in the family and loves to paint, draw and dabble in arts and crafts.

The party’s stage and backdrop by Floral Pink Designs were surreally decorated like an enchanted garden, magnificently surrounded with plants and lamps dangling from the branches of trees. At the center was a dainty swing suspended from a tree adding to the romance of the evening’s gala.

Overall, the party venue looked like an ethereal garden, reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” masterpiece.

Fit for a goddess

The darling moss-inspired birthday cake had three levels. The lower levels were creatively festooned with garden-themed cupcakes, while the topper had a Greek-themed pillar with the letter I in honor of the celebrant’s name.

The delightful giveaways were gaily-decorated potted plants and rock photo holders for the guests’ photo booth pictures. “The giveaways were related to the concept of goddesses inhabiting gardens”, Issa says.

Issa’s guests for that magical evening included her maternal grandmother Evelyn Uy, aunt Delie Uy and cousin Megan Uy, who flew in from Manila to join in the revelry.

Honoring Issa during the 18 Heroes (Roses) were her dad Jiggs, brother Gian and friends Kenny Granado, Schuyler Go, Rex Liu, Ian Duy, Lorenzo Regalado, Justin Yap, Aiken Lim,   Tim Camarao, Arie Liston, Alfred Tan, Tien Batu, Renzyl Canonio, Gelo Teola, Stephen Tac-an, Gio Maniwan and Vann Tan.

On the other hand, touching messages that made Issa tearful at times were delivered by the 18 Heroines (Candles) composed of mom Irene, Pia Bernardo, Steffi Go, Chloey Jimenez, Jassy Cabotaje, Danica Puentespina, Mich Fuentes, Clarissa Sy, Ana Orpina, Princess Chua, Abby Adriatico, Janine Duplito, Megan Uy, Khayzee Asesor, Helen Cerbo, Andri Canete, Taryn Navarro and Nikki Calixto.

Shortly after, Issa and the 18 Heroines set free 18 adorable butterflies. “It is believed that by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, in gratitude, the wish will be taken to the heavens by the butterfly and be granted by the Great Spirit”, explains Issa.

Gifts that symbolized the endearing qualities of the birthday girl were given by the 18 Deities (Treasures) Micah Chuim, Pamela Evangelio, Ella Magsakay, Rona Vidallo, K-anne Go, Moselle Tan, Rona Ng, Gabby Facundo, Shara Lim, Herica Tiu, MJ Abdul, Elle Tan, Seline Co,  Poala Sanano, Daryl Ong, Keseree Ng, Colleen Tejada and Andrea Boncato.

Roots and wings

In her speech, mom Irene emphasized two lasting bequests that mothers can give to their children – roots and wings.

First, roots mean a strong sense of self and belonging. It is a sense of what home really is and understanding of family and values. “Roots to hold forever to keep us safe and strong, and not to tie us to the ground; roots to guide us to where our fulfillment is found”, mom Irene describes.

Mommy Irene continued that wings mean instilling in Issa through unconditional love, trust and respect, the confidence to truly spread her wings. “In order to truly give your children wings, you have to give them the freedom to fly the nest, and choose the path they will walk”, points out Irene.

Irene ended her speech by reminding the debutante that once she spreads her wings and flies with her dreams, it is important to remember where she came from.

Mommy Irene need not worry as she and cool dad Jiggs have raised Issa with a secure sense of self and more than enough space to grow and glow, just like the star she was born to be!

Special thanks to Simply Gray for the party and pre-debut photos.

“Loco over LEGO”
Sun.Star Davao, June 7, 2014

Summer is officially over but our recent vacation at LEGOLAND Malaysia still brings back fond memories with the whole family.

After arriving in Singapore via Silk Air, we immediately rode our rented van to Johor Bahru, Malaysia which was just an hour away from the airport.

Sleepy and tired from hours of air and land travel in just a day, our kids automatically took their naps while on the road, only to be awakened during immigration and customs check.

We had to personally bring all of our pieces of luggage and check through the agencies which were located a floor up from the ground, all without the use of luggage carts as none were available.  This was quite a tedious process for our party of ten with ages ranging from 3 to 72.

The kids’ weariness wore off instantly though the moment we arrived at our destination.  Hallelujah! It was the LEGOLAND Resort after all, our fantastic home in Johor Bahru for two incredible nights.

Everything is awesome!

The four-star LEGOLAND Hotel, which opened late last year, has 249 spectacular rooms with pirate, kingdom and adventure themes, truly a kid’s version of Shangrila (not-so-young folks are in on it too – though still an “in the closet thing” for some).

The hotel’s lobby is a jaw-dropping spectacle with full-scale LEGO medieval castle, pirate ship and single-engine Cessna-type plane assaulting all senses when guests first enter. Like kids let loose in a candy store, we dug into countless LEGO and Duplo bricks, models and mini figurines enthusiastically assembling them in every nook and cranny, getting lost in the moment, almost forgetting to check-in.

An X-Box 360 video console and more unlimited bricks for playing were strategically situated across the hotel’s buffet restaurant, aptly-named “Bricks Family Restaurant”.  Inside the resto, the adorable bricks continued to amaze us as these were artfully assembled into striking life-sized LEGO bakers and utensils.

And the cuteness continued as disco-themed elevators opened up for us with songs from the past such as “Dancing Queen”, and with disco lights going round and round above us. It was such a treat to see the younger kids dancing merrily to the music each time we rode the lifts.

Adventure awaits

From nostalgia and getting it all in our heads, we were excited and impressed to find out that our superb travel agent Ivy Tan of Frontier Travel and Tours booked us a premium adventure-themed room for our stay, with a bunk bed and king-sized bed for our family of four.

Being able to sleep in a LEGO-themed bunk bed (with a pull-out trundle bed) was a dream come true for my daughters and their three younger cousins. My brother’s room and ours were beside each other so the kids happily transferred from one room to another carrying with them boxes of Duplo bricks generously provided in the room.

The adults, on the other hand, felt like royalty with their king-sized canopy beds. Each part of the room had its own flat screen TV.

From the beds, walls, carpets, beddings, and comfort rooms (which had two separate sinks and mirrors, one for adults and another mini version for kids), everything was tastefully LEGO. Why, I wouldn’t mind staying in the room for a whole day!

A treasure box in the corner of the room intrigued the kids. There were four questions on a sheet of paper which they had to answer. All clues could be found inside the room. After much investigation, the mystery digits were unraveled and the code was finally broken. The kids shouted with glee when they found that there were three sets of LEGO toys inside the treasure box for them to take home!

As we turned in for the night, I am sure the kids were in LEGO dreamland, and it was definitely…awesome!

LEGOLAND Park

On a bright and sunny morning the next day, after our sumptuous buffet breakfast, we set off to conquer LEGOLAND Park, just 50 steps away from the hotel. Because we were in-house guests of the hotel, we had the privilege of going inside the park by 9:30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than the other park guests.

LEGOLAND Park offers several themed areas of attractions. They included the Beginning, LEGO Technic, LEGO Kingdoms, Imagination, LEGO City, Land of Adventure and Miniland.

Whether one just wants to create and build LEGO structures, watch 4-D shows, marvel at the mini Asian landmarks or ride roller coasters, each remarkable attraction brought out the kid in us all. How do I know this? My husband who really doesn’t like posing for snaps as much as the rest of the family just could not stop himself from requesting me to take his photos, of course along with some of the LEGO life-sized figures which were placed all over the park. He was finally caving in to his LEGO nostalgia, ambling like a kid lost in Willie Wonka’s factory.

We were warned by friends who have been to LEGOLAND Malaysia that it was scorching hot at the park. So, we came extra prepared with sunblock, hats, sunglasses, shawls and umbrellas.

Water fun

By 4:30 p.m., we decided to transfer to LEGOLAND Water Park just beside the park. It had a wave pool, over 20 slides and more than 70 LEGO models.

After depositing our things at the park’s locker, equipped with a high-tech finger scanner, we made the most of the time left trying out some thrilling slides. Being the designated “nanny” of the kids that afternoon, I had to look after them at the Joker Soaker area where they had tons of water adventure. At the novel Build-A-Raft play area, the children creatively customized their rafts using LEGO soft bricks before floating away along a river of refreshing cold water.

Before we knew it, the park staff reminded us that the Water Park would be closing its doors at 6:00 p.m.

Gathering our things from the locker, we showered and changed and hurried back to Bricks where my brother would be celebrating his birthday dinner---an action-filled and packed day it was!

As I watched the LEGOLAND Hotel staff sing a surprise birthday song (complete with a birthday cake) and as the day was winding down, I could not help but feel the moment and reminisced how my once little brother used to go loco over LEGO more than thirty years ago.

That’s the endearing power of LEGO.

Those tiny bricks of magic truly transcended generations of creative builders and will surely continue to do so for more years to come!

“Steff in Wonderland”
Sun.Star Davao, June 22, 2014

With her desire to escape from reality even just for a night, Steffani Czanelle Cruz Go especially handpicked “Alice in Wonderland” as the whimsical theme of her recent 18th birthday celebration.

“Let’s face it; the real world can be dull, harsh and ugly. In Wonderland, however, life is full of imagination, color, beauty and laughter. Even though Wonderland is a place full of nonsense, it is sensible to say that without it, life would lose its heart and “much-ness”, shares Steff, who is a 2nd year AB Psychology student at the Ateneo de Manila University.

For Steff, “Alice in Wonderland” is about growing up and, to survive in such a world, change is always constant.

“Like Alice, I, too have changed. My debut signals my transition to the challenging yet exciting world of adulthood. This milestone marks a beginning in which the state of my thinking is filled with new strength and maturity while maintaining parts of my childlike behavior”, declares the unica hija of lovely couple Tyrone and Aireen Go.

Quirky tea party

Steff’s Alice-inspired scroll invitation, handmade with loving care by Crafter’s Haven, was accentuated with a golden key to depict the key to Wonderland.

As guests arrived at the Davao Convention Center on Steff’s birthday, their eyes feasted on the splashes of vibrant colors. The eccentric rabbit hole entrance was inspired by the Lotus Garden and creatively draped with oversized playing cards as well as lopsided signs that said, 'This way wrong way, tea party'.

Veejay Salonga of Decoratives of Janna and Hercs marvelously filled the party venue with amusing and quirky touches highlighting the Mad Hatter tea party theme.

There were gargantuan playing cards on the walls, clocks, garden flowers, mushrooms, fruits and various tea sets for the fabulous tea party. Each guest table showcased a giant mushroom, garden lamp post, frames, cards, teacups, clock, key, books and well-loved quotes from the beloved tale.

On the other hand, the majestic backdrop drew inspiration from the rabbit hole, the portal to Alice’s amazing adventure, with its mismatched and playful elements.

Sweet and elegant

Steff’s tiffany blue-tiered ball gown by renowned designer Erwin Lee Tan of K Davao was fully encrusted with crystals, stones, and beads. The breathtaking gown had a semi-halter neckline which matched the sweet personality of the debutante.

“Even though my debut denotes that I am now a grown and mature lady, I felt like a young girl full of curiosity with my poufy blue dress. I loved how the cut and style of my dress along with the arrangement of the stones, made me feel that I was aging with elegance and grace”, smiles Steff.

The ball gown transformed into a short cocktail dress without the bouffant skirt after Steff made a quick change during the party. “It was truly a gown that transported the wearer into Wonderland!”, describes the designer.

Otoi Mercado, Steff’s longtime makeup artist in all of her milestones as a teen, made his muse picture perfect with peach-blushed cheeks, nude lips, and her hair curled and gathered at the side.

Edible masterpiece

Each layer of Steff’s birthday cake by Marjory Pang of Icing on the Cake was meticulously chosen by the birthday girl to represent different articles from Alice in Wonderland.

As with the story, there was the checkered floor and the tiny door that can only be opened by the golden key leading to the beautiful garden bedecked with huge mushrooms.

“The cake also had the Queen of Hearts who is the main antagonist of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland but I would rather want it to represent the people around me who have good hearts; the Mad Hatter’s hat which symbolizes all the “madness” of the world (both good and bad); the pocket watch of the white rabbit which signifies the importance of time and how we should live each second; and the teapot that stands for celebration and fellowship with the ones we love”, Steff details.

Lastly, the top layer had the white rabbit which Steff describes as the one which navigates Alice. “For me, the rabbit symbolizes the guidance we get from God, our True Navigator, and our loved ones in our adventures throughout our life”, says Steff.

“All these elements were made of sugar, each carefully molded to perfection to create a fun and colorful Alice in Wonderland edible masterpiece”, she shares.

Breakaway

Steff’s special guests for her debut were her dearest friends, relatives, godparents and mentors from Davao Christian High School and Stella Maris Academy of Davao where she excelled academically and spent her high school and grade school years, respectively.

In their personal messages and tributes during the 18 Roses, Blessings, Candles and Teacups, almost everybody had nothing but good words for the kind-hearted and fashionable Steff who has been such a blessing to many.

More surprises came when her co-resident students from Ateneo de Manila University as well as close friends John Christopher Pontillas, Juan Daray and Moses Cam performed their song numbers.

Even Steff’s only brother Kyle elicited a shocked expression from the debutante when in the middle of singing his song, “A Whole New World”, Steff’s seven-year-old voice crooning the same song magically played along his brother’s ala duet.  You can hear the ‘oohs’ and the ‘aahs’ of the guests who were also caught up in the moment, feeling and appreciating the close bond of the family.

Capping the magical night was the debutante’s impromptu and heartfelt thank you speech to the guests, followed by Steff’s soulful rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” hit while she expertly played the ukulele.

As I listened intently to the lyrics, the catchy song was indeed a very apt choice for this young lady who is now more than ready to spread her wings at 18.

“I’ll spread my wings and I’ll learn how to fly
I’ll do what it takes till I touch the sky
             And I’ll make a wish
            Take a chance
            Make a change
            And breakaway”—Kelly Clarkson, “Breakaway”

A million thanks to ace photographer Marlon Advincula for sharing Steff’s pre-debut and party photos.

“CROSSING OVER”
Sun.Star Davao, July 5, 2014

Forty-eight members from the Barracuda Swim Team recently joined a fun swim from Davao toPakiputan Strait at the Island Garden City of Samal. Organized by award-winning coach Vasit Venturillo , the swimmers braved 1.6 kilometers of wind, waves and current to reach their target goal, a fitting finish after weeks of training and preparation.

Meet six of these amazing swimmers: three dads and three kids who became each other’s swim buddies during this momentous father-child tandem swim!

JIMMY YAP (age 40), businessman; likes watching TV series
KENN ULRICH YAP (age 10), Grade 5; likes reading, watching ‘Tom and Jerry’ and eating sweets

*How long have you been into sports?

Jimmy: I played badminton during my younger years, and only learned swimming in the summer of 2013. I joined the Novice Durianman Triathlon back in 2013 and a duathlon last summer. I am also planning to join a sprint triathlon this year.

Kenn: I started swimming at the age of 4 and have won several medals already. I have been swimming almost every day for 2 years. Last summer, I also joined the “Langoy Para sa Kabataan”.

* How did you prepare for your long-distance swim from Davao to Samal?

Jimmy: Our coach, Vasit Venturillo, really helped us prepare for the long-distance swim. We trained for about a month. We didn’t follow a special diet but we just avoided eating too much before our swim.

* Why did you decide to swim as a parent-child tandem?

Jimmy: It’s like a graduation event for swimmers. You must cross at least once. It’s every swimmer’s dream to cross. At first, we were both nervous. Ulrich was very silent that morning. As for me, I just had a positive mind and hoped that there were no sharks in the water and the current would not be very strong.

*Who or what inspired you to finish the swim?

Jimmy: Our goal was to finish the swim. There was no turning back, thanks to our swim buddies who kept us safe and continuously shouted, “Pull, pull, pull…Lapit na!”.

* What were the important lessons/values that you learned from the training and the actual swim itself?

Jimmy: In swimming, you have to be relaxed, take out all the problems in your head and concentrate going to the other side. You don’t have to rush, just focus and don’t stop learning.

*How do you apply these values you learned in other areas of your life?

Jimmy: We always take things one at a time, slowly but surely. Don’t rush because you might lose focus and fail. Ulrich is a consistent honor student and really sets his goals this early. As for me, I’ve been in my business for 18 years and I haven’t stopped learning. There is always something new.

*How did you support each other as a parent-child team?

Jimmy: I give words of encouragement and always act as a role model for Ulrich. But, this time, it’s the other way around, I only crossed the ‘channel’ because my son was crossing!

* What is your advice for younger kids/parents who also wish to challenge themselves and do a long-distance swim?

Jimmy: First, learn how to swim properly. Get a coach. Second, have a group of family or friends who are also into the sports or encourage them to go into swimming. Third, enjoy and don’t stop swimming.

*When is your next swim/sports event?

Jimmy: Ulrich will definitely join an interschool competition if there is one. I may be joining the Petron Blazeman this August 2014.

**********

LAFAYETTE ALVAREZ LIM (age 40), businessman
MATTHAEUS HENRICUS HO LIM (age 7), Grade 2; loves swimming, playing Minecraft, Lego and dinosaurs

*How long have you been into sports?

Yet: I started swimming sometime in my elementary days during the summer. I was with the Blue Marlin Swimming Club. I had joined only one freestyle competition where I was 4th place.

Matt:  When I was younger, I played a little soccer during one summer. I started swimming under Coach Vasit Venturillo's Barracuda Swim Team in the summer of 2013. I also joined an Aquathlon last March 16.  My first swimming competition was last May 25 where I won first place in my age category for novices in all 4 events.

*How did you prepare for your long-distance swim from Davao to Samal?

Yet: I did not!!! Hahaha! But I did go island hopping 2 days before and tried to practice my swimming. I haven't been swimming regularly for a long time.

Matt: Aside from my weekly swimming classes, on the week of the event I trained every day, swimming 2 sets of 60 laps each at Linmar's pool. I also was with Papa during the island hopping and swam with him from the boat to the nearest beach and back.

*Why did you decide to swim as a parent-child tandem?

Yet: When Coach Vasit mentioned about it, I thought it was a great idea, but Matt was a little worried of things like sharks and corrals. I first offered to accompany him on a boat and later said I will swim with him, but he was still not convinced. Eventually, I told him to think it over
and he later on agreed. Now the pressure was on me because I haven't been swimming regularly for a long time and had never swam that long a distance before.

*Were there any fears of swimming in the deep waters at first and if
yes, how did you overcome this fear?

Matt: Papa told me to not think of the things I was afraid of and that
he will swim with me. So, after thinking about it, I agreed.

*Who or what inspired you to finish the cross channel?

Yet: Initially it was to encourage Matt to go for it, but after he agreed I actually was excited about doing it also.

Matt:  Pops and Mom! Achie Angeli, not so much!

*What were the important lessons/values that you learned from the training and the actual swim itself?

Yet: I was worried because I don't exercise, but I guess my healthy eating kept me in good condition because it wasn't as difficult as I had imagined. Also, the thought of finishing it with my son was a major happy thought for me, and it was fulfilling.

Matt: The training was really hard but I was happy when I finished crossing the ‘channel’.

*How do you apply these values you learned in other areas of your life?

Yet: I guess this is kind of a crown for my many years of sacrifice of eating healthy. I do it as an investment for my future health. This event turned out to be an early reward.

Matt:
It made me want to awesomely swim some more and do a long-distance swim again.

*How did you support each other as a parent-child team?

Yet: Actually Matt was assigned a buddy as was required, so I swam behind them. During the times he stopped to rest, I just encouraged him to keep going.

*What is your advice for younger kids/parents who also wish to challenge themselves and do a long-distance swim?

Yet:  You have to be sure you're healthy enough and have enough swimming experience or training to do it.  After that, the main hurdle will really be swimming against the waves and the current. The depth of the water should not be an issue, you just keep swimming. It would be a truly memorable experience and an awesome challenge to do it together with your kid.  Of course, it is best to do it together with those who have experience doing it.

*When is your next swim/sports event?

Yet: On June 28 at the Kadagayaan Festival Invitational Swim Meet at the Tagum Sports Complex. This will be Matt's 2nd and last competition as a novice. After this, he will already be considered an amateur. (Note from Mom-About-Town: Last June 28, Matt won first place in three events: butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke; and second place for freestyle. Great job, Matt!)

********
PATRICK DAVID L. LIM (age 43), financial advisor, frustrated chef, and triathlete
KARLA CATHERINE P. LIM (age 14), Grade 8; loves swimming, badminton, wakeboarding, and biking

*How long have you been into sports?

Patrick:  I’ve been into triathlon since February 2013.

Karla:  I started formal swimming lessons when I was 9 years old in 2009-2010 only.  Then I stopped after 1 year.  I joined again this summer 2014 under Coach Haroon Cali of Holiday Gym.

*How did you prepare for your long-distance swim from Davao to Samal?

Karla: Actually I was back swimming the whole of 2014 summer to prepare for the school swimming varsity, not to prepare for any long-distance swim.  When Daddy told me that Coach Haroon invited me to join the ‘cross channel’ swim, I asked Dad if he will join us.  When he said he will swim with me, I agreed to join.  That was 1 week before the activity.  Dad prepared me 2 days before the actual day.  We did non-stop long-distance swimming in the pool.

*Why did you decide to swim as a parent-child tandem?

Karla:  My dad told me that my swimming coach, Haroon Cali, invited me to join the ‘cross channel’ activity and I wanted to join and swim with my dad.

Patrick:  It’s actually my third time to do a long-distance swim, as part of triathlon training. I always shared my experiences with my children and they were always excited to hear my stories.  Now that it was Karla’s opportunity to experience it, I knew that ‘crossing the channel’ would be a priceless and significant experience for her.  I also felt that her confidence level would be higher if she knows that I will be swimming beside her.

*Were there any fears of swimming in the deep waters at first and if
yes, how did you overcome this fear?

Karla: Yes.  When I jumped in the water, the first thing I did was to look what was underneath me.  It was all dark blue or dark green, and it was scary.  I overcame my fear because I know my Dad and another swim buddy was swimming beside me all the time.

*Did you follow a special diet during your training?

Patrick:  I use to weigh 185 lbs. for more than 10 years since I got sick of typhoid fever in 2010.  Then I decided to lose weight. Since August 2010, I started my no-rice-during-lunch-and-dinner diet (no cheat at all), and regularly go to the gym.  In 2012, I weighed 165 lbs. and decided to get into triathlon.  I maintained my no-rice-during-lunch-and-dinner diet up to the present.

Karla: No, I did not follow any special diet.  I eat everything.

*Who or what inspired you to finish the long-distance swim?

Karla:  Dad was always beside me or in front of me, coaching me.  He was always talking to me, letting me know how many meters or minutes to go.  I really wanted to finish it because I know I can do it, and I want to prove to myself that I can conquer my fear of not reaching the shore, and also to make my family happy for me.

* What were the important lessons/values that you learned from the training and the actual long-distance swim itself?

Karla:  I realized that constant practice and listening to our coach will make ‘crossing the channel’ easy for me.  I also learned that I should not be scared of trying things I have not done before, and overcoming fear of something we cannot see like what was underneath me.  I also learned that we should put a lot of petroleum jelly because there are a lot of jellyfish in the sea.

*How do you apply these values you learned in other areas of your life?

Karla:  I should not be afraid of trying new things and conquering our fears as long as we are guided by our coaches/teachers.  Proper and constant practice will help us a lot in whatever we do.

*How did you support each other as a parent-child team?

Patrick:  I have always supported the choice of sport or hobbies of my children.  In the same token, I get myself involved in their choice if I can do it.  In this particular event, it was Karla who got herself involved in my sport.  So I made it a point to support her, from practice to actual swim, from start to finish.

Karla:  We swam side by side, finished together, and cheered for each other.

*What is your advice for younger kids/parents who also wish to challenge themselves and do the cross channel swim?

Patrick:  Parents should support the choice of hobby or sport of your children.  When teaching them or guiding them, we should also practice what we teach them so they may see for themselves.  We should always walk our talk.

Karla: We should not be afraid of trying new things like ‘crossing the channel’, for as long as we allow ourselves to be guided by our coaches and teachers.  We should always learn the proper way and constant practice will bring us to the shore.

*When is your next swim/sports event?

Karla:  I have no idea yet, but I will be joining the swimming team of my school.

“Transformers: Autobots Round-Up”
Sun.Star Davao, July 19, 2014

Every time my husband and I watch a Transformers movie, we cannot help but have our minds taken away to memories of our childhood.

Now that we have kids in tow, we not only enjoy watching the latest T-movie (it’s how we affectionately call the movie at home) but also enjoy seeing our kids faces light up as my husband explains, with all seriousness worthy of a movie buff, the plot and the characters of the movie.

For this year’s T-movie, we were fortunate to be invited by Chevrolet Davao to enjoy the action-filled, most anticipated movie of the year as it rolls out our favorite autobots:  “Transformers - Age of Extinction”.

With all the mind-bending graphics, animation and action scenes, we were again treated to the bravado and heroism of Optimus Prime, and the playful naivete of the one of the most recognizable characters of the movie, Bumble Bee.

For the adults, no T-movie is without “quotable quotes” from the mighty Optimus Prime.  Once again, these quotes strike at the heart of the plot and bring us back to the good old days of the story.  How else can a metallic hero endear its fans than standing up against the might of an enemy complete with word after word of inspirational quotes, espousing the values of honesty, loyalty and sincerity?

The kids were once again awestruck with the iconic yellow and black Chevrolet Camaro as it takes center stage as the well-loved Autobot displaying compassion for the human race and the bravery of a true Autobot warrior. Our friends at Chevrolet Davao informed us that Bumble Bee initially takes form as a vintage 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS that eventually evolves to a Camaro concept car.

As expected, the kids were talking about the movie past their bedtime.  Each had her own favorite Autobot and favorite scenes.  My husband took time to stress that, as shown in the movie, the inherent values of goodness, persistency and hard work cement any bond, whether friendship or family, even as relationships go through challenges.

The use of technology, now that smartphones and tablets are pervasive, is second only to good moral values.  There is no point in using technology if it affects any aspect of humanity be it in the scale of Decepticon-type destruction or run-of-the-mill  “hand in the cookie jar” type of playful naughtiness.

With twinkling in his eyes, my husband made a special mention about the cameos of the Dinobots, the animal-like robots appearing during the climax of the movie.  I am not familiar with their stories but was keenly aware that this will evoke in him another round of nostalgia and reminiscing the past.

At this point, we had to switch off the lights for bed or else the kids will start off another round of questions and pleas for more stories!

A big big thanks to AB&T Resources, Inc., Chevrolet Davao dealer for the family movie treat! Chevrolet Davao has an ALL-NEW showroom at Km 7, J.P Laurel Ave., Lanang (near Grand Regal Hotel) and will also expand to General Santos City by August 2014.

“A L.AT.C.H. made in heaven”
Sun.Star Davao, Aug. 2, 2014

There is a Jewish proverb that says “God could not be everywhere, so He created mothers”.

With this, the mommy members of  L.A.T.C.H.  Davao Peer Counselors reach out with kindness and understanding to support, promote and protect breastfeeding.

L.A.T.C.H. (Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling, Help) is a non-profit organization established in Manila in 2006 that offers quality lactation education and peer counseling services to mothers who wish to breastfeed.

For mothers who are struggling with breastfeeding, the presence of this breastfeeding support group in Davao is indeed “a L.A.T.C.H. made in heaven”!

“We cannot ignore the statistics and data showing the importance of breastfeeding”, shares Keryl Lee-Tan of L.A.T.C.H. Davao.

Keryl continues that as “a global public health recommendation, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.”

According to L.A.T.C.H. Davao, “breastfeeding is a learned skill that both mom and baby need to master, and the most critical time for success is when the baby is brought home from the hospital”.

Keryl explains that “mothers begin to doubt their capacity to nourish their child because of unsupportive family members, lack of information, unnecessary separation of mom and baby during the time of birth or during the hospital stay, and the like”.

But, Keryl clarifies that moms do not need rescuers for breastfeeding; all they need is the right information, encouragement and support.

And, this is where L.A.T.C.H.  Davao comes in as a response to the WHO mother-baby friendly initiative, Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, specifically in step number 10, which is to “foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic”.

L.A.T.C.H. Peer Counselors are, first of all, breastfeeding mothers who have experienced the challenges and benefits of breastfeeding with the awareness that they all create ripples that affect each other.

Recognizing the impact of media and society in undermining breastfeeding, L.A.T.C.H. Davao’s main goal is to educate and empower mothers by giving them the right information, backed up by evidence-based data, information and practices.

The organization regularly holds breastfeeding talks within the city and counseling within the community.

For the breastfeeding month of August, L.A.T.C.H. has invited Canadian pediatrician and breastfeeding expert Dr. Jack Newman for a one-day symposium on breastfeeding. The event will be on August 11, 2014, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the SMX Convention Center at SM Lanang Premier. This is a tri-city event with Manila holding theirs on August 9 and Cebu on August13.

Topics to be discussed include: “what they didn't teach you about breastfeeding in your training; norms for the first few days and numbers on demand; and norms for a breastfeeding baby”.

For more information about the symposium, go to latchbumpdavao2014.eventbrite.com or email latchdavao@gmail.com or text  (0905) 353-7144.

“Somewhere over Isobel’s rainbow”
Sun.Star Davao, Feb. 8, 2014

“Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true”

Ylisha Isobel Patiño-Ong is certainly a dream come true for her parents, Randall and Vanessa Ann.

“We are so blessed by the miracle of Isobel. She came when we’ve accepted that we will only have two kids. It was such an amazing surprise for us. She is our ray of sunshine, a happy beautiful baby”, Mommy Vanessa, a furniture and interior designer, reveals.

With skin as white as snow, angelic eyes and calm temperament, doting sisters Zoe and Caelie immediately fell in love with the newest addition to the family.

Isobel also had that magical and magnetic effect on other family members, her parents’ friends (including me!) and even random people at the mall. One can’t just help but be instantly drawn to this darling cherub!

Oz-worthy

Charming Isobel recently celebrated her 1st birthday at the grand ballroom of The Marco Polo Hotel with a whimsical “Wizard of Oz” theme.

“When I heard that "Wicked" would be staged in Manila, I thought that it would be a perfect theme for Isobel’s birthday. It was something new. After researching through the internet and Pinterest, I saw cartoon-like “Wizard of Oz” characters that were so cute. It got me extremely excited with the theme!” the creative mom shares.

Vanessa collaborated with the ever-reliable party planner Annie Paz-Lim to make sure that Isobel’s party will be Oz-worthy. Annie has always been the Ong family’s go-to person in conceptualizing and organizing their important milestones.

Invitations to the grand event were nestled in ruby red slipper paper cutouts and came with a reminder to guests to send their “regrets to the good witch” a.k.a. Mommy Vanessa.

Somewhere over the rainbow

As guests entered the ballroom, a huge and colorful board surrounded with red balloons displayed the lyrics from the song, “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. This was the enchanting ballad that Dorothy crooned in the movie version of the “Wizard of Oz”.

Amiable party host Jymmez Infiesto gamely donned the Cowardly Lion’s costume while the assistants were playfully dressed as the Wicked Witch and the Scarecrow.

The birthday celebrant looked dainty in her Dorothy-inspired attire from the Rajito line of top designer Rajo Laurel.

Meanwhile, eldest sister Zoe especially requested that she be dressed as Finley, the witty monkey from “Oz the Great and Powerful”, sans the wings. Edgar Buyan happily obliged with her young client’s request and designed her shiny blue porter suit and hat. On the other hand, Caelie fancied being the Good Witch in her lovely Rajito dress.

This way to Emerald City

“We wanted the ballroom to look like we were walking on the yellow brick road on our way to the Emerald City”, explains the meticulous Vanessa.

With Emerald City as the party’s backdrop, the venue had a rustic feel to it. “We incorporated elements from the movie like ceiling decorations made of red and powder blue fabric, hot air balloons as well as Japanese lanterns. In addition, gingham patterns of white and blue reflected Dorothy’s character in the party decorations", Vanessa details.

The guest tables had different Oz elements such as picnic baskets full of apples, paper cutouts in vases, red balloons, characters like the Tin Man and Scarecrow, hot air balloons, as well as picture frames bearing famous lines from the movie.

The fun and interactive kiddie games such as “Search the Tin Man's Heart”, “Pass the Cowardly Lion's Crown, “Witch of the West Relay”, “Dorothy's Learn the Wizard Dance” and “Scarecrow's Race Relay” also carried the “Wizard of Oz” theme.

Layers of love

The four-tiered birthday cake was a labor of love from the wonderful women behind Baby Cakes. Vanessa’s good friend and business partner Maite Gempesaw baked the scrumptious cake while Isobel’s godmother Kay Gempesaw masterfully decorated it.

Each layer was a tribute to a character or a particular scene from the movie. The first layer featured the gingham pattern of Dorothy with a house and the Cowardly Lion’s badge of courage while the second tier was colored silver as a tribute to the Tin Man with his heart.

On the other hand, the third layer had a garden full of red flowers while the topmost layer highlighted the 3-D character of Dorothy carrying her dog Toto with a vibrant rainbow in the background. The iconic yellow brick road to Emerald City was strategically placed in the center of the towering cake.

Guests feasted on the sumptuous food from Marco Polo’s Lotus Court with the dishes personally and carefully chosen by maternal grandmother Janice Ong; Basti’s Brew’s Pinoy Pizza, shakes and coffee; and Alor’s fabulous dessert spread.

As the party ended, the kiddie guests eagerly received “Wizard of Oz” bag organizers brimming with goodies.

We share photos of Isobel’s splendid “Wizard of Oz” party by Simply Gray.

“Ladies in bloom”
Sun.Star Davao, Aug. 16, 2014

With the theme, “Nature: A Blessing for Ikebana”, the thirty-two members of the Ikebana International Davao Chapter 133 showcased their ingenious floral art creations in a world-class exhibit recently at the SM Lanang Premier.

Now on its 46th year, the society’s Davao members are especially bound by a common passion for self-expression through the breathtaking art of ikebana.

Ikebana is the well-loved Japanese art of flower arrangement. However, unlike the conventional way of arranging flowers, ikebana enthusiasts express their creativity within certain rules of construction. They utilize organic materials such as branches, leaves, grasses, flowers, among others, to come up with their works of art. The final ‘masterpiece’ is considered a “living thing where nature and humanity are brought together”.

This Kadayawan, be amazed at the ladies in bloom of Ikebana Davao as they share their blossoming love affair with ikebana!

DANNEY BARNETT
President, Ikebana International Davao Chapter 133 (2012-2014)

*How did you get into ikebana?

Señora Esther de Jesus invited a group of Latinas to attend a meeting of Ikebana International Davao Chapter 133, but I couldn't understand anything since I didn't speak English, but thank goodness all the ladies didn't mind and accepted me as a member regardless of the language barrier.

*How long have you been a member of this group?

From 2004 to the present…10 years!

*Were you always a creative person (into art/flower arrangement/crafts)?

I do not consider myself creative (with my hands) but I do have a lot of energy and a drive for event organizing and activities. I have the gift to encourage people and inspire change and involve everyone in the process.

*If you are a beginner, what necessary materials/tools should you invest in when doing ikebana?

When you are a beginner your heart and personality are your main and necessary tools and materials. After you've defined your tendency and style of work, you can move on to other tools and materials. With just any vase (from kitchenware to a bag), a kenzan, and the beautiful diversity of flowers and plants in Davao, and our gardens, you can create wonders.

*Note: “A kenzan, also called ‘spiky frog’, is a specific device used in the Japanese art of flower arrangement, ikebana, for fixing the flowers in the container.  It consists of a heavy lead plate with erected brass needles where the stipes are fixed” (Source: Wikipedia)

*Why do you love ikebana?

I love ikebana because Ikebana Davao welcomed me with arms wide open when I had no clue about English or ikebana. When I was pregnant with my daughter Zury, a teacher who came from Japan said I had a life inside and explained the connection between the life of my daughter and nature and beauty and creativity, after all, 'Man is nature's guest'. ‎ In addition, when my house burned down a year ago, plus other problems I've gone through, the members of the I.I. Davao Chapter have always been there for me.

*What was the theme of your two works during the recent exhibit? How did the materials and design represent your theme?

The styles I used for my arrangement belong to the school of Sogetsu, which is a school of Ikebana International.

The first arrangement I created represented my personality, shin (heaven) and soe (man) with my trademark curly hair. For hikae (earth), I used the cattleya orchid, the national flower of Colombia because I’m Colombian. The two ceramic shoes symbolize my hobby of dancing.

The second arrangement, the broken electric fan, is my way of telling the world that even recycling materials can be used to express the beauty of nature, imagination, and conservation of the environment.

*You’ve been the Ikebana (Davao chapter) president for two years, how was your experience, so far?

I had to work on my conversational and comprehensive English, as well as to continue the relationship between the Filipino, Latin, and Japanese cultures because ikebana is an art originated from Japan.

I also had to start learning about the native trees, plants, and flowers of the Philippines. Ever since I became president, I have been lucky to have the unconditional support of Honorable Japanese Consul  Koichi Ibara and his lovely wife, Madam Mariko Ibara.

I have been invited to participate in the King of Festivals, “Kadayawan”. I also had the opportunity to travel to other provinces and institutions that were affected by the typhoons Pablo and Yolanda.

I have also visited other countries to represent the Davao chapter, which has let me meet new people. They have immensely helped my growth as a person.

*What were the highlights of the recent Ikebana event?

I am grateful for my family's support, especially my husband Roberto Barnett, and my kids Eric, Harry and Zury.

To see every single member's work; to see their passion, imagination, and heart left in their arrangement; seeing the effort and love exerted by both the new members as well as the older members such as Ms. Dally Soriano and Mr. Boy Guino-o was such a joy!

I was in awe seeing all the members dressed in Filipiniana for the most important event of the chapter. It was overwhelming to stand in front of the exhibition and marvel at the rainbow of colors and emotions. I had that peaceful feeling which was transmitted through nature's gracious hands.

We were also privileged to have representatives of theIkebana International (I.I.) Manila Chapter 108, I.I. Cebu Chapter 145, and I.I. Cagayan de Oro Chapter 163, join us for the exhibit.

DR. JENNIFER CHRISTINE LIM

*How did you get into ikebana?

I was invited by the Ikebana Davao president Danney Barnett, who is the patient and friend of my dentist-husband Chin.

*How long have you been a member of this group?

Almost a year, I joined the group last Sept 2013.

*Were you always a creative person (into art/flower arrangement/crafts)?

I have always loved arts and crafts but I haven’t dabbled in flower arrangements until now.

*Why do you love ikebana?

After several workshops, my perception of plants and flowers has changed! My appreciation of nature was elevated to a whole new level.

*What was the theme of your work during the recent exhibit?

I made sure to infuse the Filipino theme to my Japanese arrangement. My theme is “Maria Clara”. I used lisanthium and fox tail to symbolize the Maria Clara ladies who are very simple, elegant and lady-like. The papyrus represents the strong Filipino men. I was fortunate to have found an antique vase that went perfectly with my theme.

VANESSA ANN PATIÑO ONG

*How did you get into Ikebana?
Dr. Jennifer Lim was the one who invited me to join ikebana with her since they were looking for younger members for the group.

*How long have you been a member of this group?

I have been a member since October of last year.

*Were you always a creative person (into art/flower arrangement/crafts)?

I’ve always been interested in the arts. I am into water color, painting, scrapbooking and crafting. In college, I had a subject in flower arrangement because I took up Interior Design. However, it was totally different from the ikebana style.

*Why do you love ikebana?

I love the minimalist elegant style of ikebana; using different kinds of materials that can be unique; and one you can't imagine to actually look really good together after being arranged.

*What was the theme of your work during the recent exhibit?

I utilized variation no. 2, slanting style (moribana) for my work. Since the theme was recycling materials, I used a vintage vase from my grandfather, a wooden tray from a serving plate I had at home, and foliage from my father-in-law's garden. As for the flowers, I especially ordered Colombian roses from Waling Flowers.

LEA TIONKO IMPERIAL

*How did you get into ikebana?

My grandmother, Carmen M. Soriano, was the founder of Ikebana Davao Chapter 133 and a certified ikebana teacher. I grew up seeing her make arrangements daily. She used different materials. When I was 10 years old, she taught me Ikenobo. We only had a few sessions though. I did not appreciate it much at that time since I would prefer to do other things.

Last year, my mom (who is also a longtime member) made me join the Sogetsu workshop. After that, I joined Ikebana Davao together with my other two cousins. We were all new.

*How long have you been a member of this group?

          One year

*Were you always a creative person (into art/flower arrangement/crafts)?

Not really. I had to get out of my comfort zone once I learned the basics. I had to research and use my imagination to create the arrangement that I had in mind. Sometimes, it comes out the way I like it. Sometimes, it doesn’t. Nevertheless, I learn from it.

*If you are a beginner, what necessary materials/tools should you invest in when doing ikebana?

A pair of garden scissors, kenzan, flat vase or container and a tall cylindrical vase. If you don’t have the flat vase, a square or rectangular Pyrex will do---but just for practice.

*Why do you love ikebana?

I love ikebana because I discover something new every day. I have become observant with the plants around me, looking for lines and leaves. When I am making my arrangement, I lose track of time because I am fully occupied with the task and having fun at the same time.

*What was the theme of your work during the recent exhibit?

First of all, I wanted to do a slanting nageire. I wanted something in full bloom, something rich, simple yet elegant. I definitely wanted pink. I found my lines in the garden. It’s golden duranta. I used it for the Sogetsu workshop last month. After that, I had it dried. The container was simply gorgeous. It was perfect for the slanting style. I borrowed it from my mom which originally belonged to my Lola. For the flowers, I bought 2 dozens of pink lisianthus. I bunched it together to make it look as a big flower. It matched the lines and container very well. The arrangement came out as how I wanted it.

AMELIA CRUZ VALLE

*How did you get into ikebana?

By invitation from the current Ikebana International Davao Chapter president Danney Barnett
*How long have you been a member of this group?
Less than a year as a certified member

*Why do you love ikebana?

It's a good feeling! Whatever you make surely brightens up any place.

*What was the theme of your work during the recent exhibit?

I can't really say I have a specific theme aside from nature that is common to all arrangements. Using what's available at home is always a thought in mind. With my dear husband's insistence, I started with the use of this very long acquired dried green turned yellow fern. He said I should think of incorporating it with my arrangement as it's quite unique and different. The same goes with the dark-coloured slim branches that blend well with the fern colour. Those fresh branches of variegated leaves came from our garden while the red-orange flowers are store-bought liliums. Now, to add an accessory to the arrangement, I chose this upside-down bamboo table to add some point of interest and to show a twist in continuity of the materials used. The black lunch box cloth-wrap was so placed to add a sense of calmness and emphasis on the colours used. Whether dried or fresh or processed, you can take note that the materials came from nature.

JOSIE GEMPESAW BARCIA

*How did you get into ikebana?

Ikebana has always been a part of my life.  For as long as I can remember, my grandmother, the late Doña Carmen Soriano, has always had a passion for the art.  Lola Carmen loved the art so much that she wanted to share her passion with others here in Davao. She eventually became the founder of Ikebana Davao Chapter.

At the same time, my mother, Sonia Gempesaw, was also just as passionate about the art. So you can imagine all the materials that were lying around the house and of course, the beautiful arrangements that came out of the flowers, twigs, and leaves.  We always had such gorgeous arrangements at home made from freshly-cut materials coming from the gardens.

This was something I took for granted until I finally decided to join the Ikebana Chapter here in Davao late last year.

Little by little, I began to familiarize myself with the art and found that I was beginning to enjoy it. That’s how I got into it.

*How long have you been a member of this group?

I joined Ikebana Chapter 133 in September of last year, along with my two cousins, Lea Tionko-Imperial and Tina Peralta-Tionko.

*Were you always a creative person (into art/flower arrangement/crafts)?

I believe creativity exists in everyone.  For some people, this is expressed through writing, painting, or the creation of handicrafts.  In my case, I have always been interested in expressing myself through arts and crafts.  Long before I joined Ikebana Davao, I was already into making my own topiaries during the holidays.  I think that my grandmother had a strong influence on me and my other cousins.

*If you are a beginner, what necessary materials/tools should you invest in when doing ikebana?

The basic materials needed for ikebana are the following:  a good kenzan, different coloured and shaped vases (these need not be expensive), good garden scissors, and of course, flowers and other materials such as leaves and twigs.

*Why do you love ikebana?

Ikebana is the art of creating symbols of nature through arrangements.  I love ikebana because it allows me to be creative.  It gives me the silence I need to create and share a piece of my soul through the arrangements.  Just like my mother and my grandmother, my love for nature is expressed through ikebana.  Even as an amateur, I enjoy being able to create a piece that captures my take on nature.  I’m lucky enough to have been exposed to the different ways of presenting arrangements which has helped me develop an artistic eye for the art. I think that the ikebana arrangements make a house look pretty and homey.

*What was the theme of your work during the recent exhibit?

The theme of my work during this recent exhibit is to show the uniqueness and beauty of nature through my arrangement.  It is a symbol of nature as seen through my eyes.  I chose materials that were not very common.  For this year’s exhibit, I also chose colors that represent nature well.  Yellow is such a happy color.  The patch of yellow represents the brightness of the colors of nature.  The leaves from the box plant represent nature’s sturdiness as well.  The deep green color of the box plant’s leaves is so pretty and is a great contrast with the brightness of the orchid.

“Breastfeeding ‘rockstar’ visits Davao”
Sun.Star Davao, August 30, 2014

They say that “it takes a village to raise a child”. Indeed, the same rings true for mothers for it takes a village to help a mom rear her young.

And, it is with this motto that LATCH, a group of breastfeeding peer counselors, has made it possible to bring Dr. Jack Newman, a renowned pediatrician in the field of breastfeeding, recently for a breastfeeding symposium at the SMX Convention Center Davao.

L.A.T.C.H. (Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling, Help) is a non-profit organization that offers quality lactation education and peer counseling services to mothers who wish to breastfeed.

“It is the mission of these breastfeeding advocates to educate and empower doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, mothers, fathers and other members of the family not only on the benefits of breastfeeding but the risks of artificial feeding; to break the myths by providing evidence-based studies; and to simply listen to their stories”, says Julie Lapaz of LATCH Davao.

"At Dr. Newman’s breastfeeding symposium, he talked about the norms of a breastfed baby including the numbers that dealt with weight gain; misuse of growth charts and scales; and jaundice. He also showed several video clips on babies and mothers with whom he has consulted and helped”, Julie shares.

Doctors and nurses from leading hospitals, a team from a maternity center and mothers and fathers came to listen to the breastfeeding ‘rockstar’ and learn as he answered questions from the audience, dispel several myths and illustrate the correct and proper ways to address each need.

The latest edition of his bestselling book, “Guide to Breastfeeding”, was also sold onsite and was signed personally by Dr. Newman to the delight of the attendees.

Davao City is just one of the three cities visited by Dr. Newman this year. Aside from Davao, he also conducted a symposium in Manila and Cebu during his Philippine tour.

The theme for this year’s tour is entitled “Breastfeeding Uncovered: Mission Possible”.

"This is a very apt theme as the mission of LATCH is to help and support mothers and their families. It is also to show to the public that it is indeed possible to breastfeed successfully”, explains Julie.

The Dr. Jack Newman symposium also coincided with the Breastfeeding Awareness Month this August.

“Breastfeeding is a public health issue and mothers should be educated and enlightened so they are able to make an informed decision in nourishing and giving the best to their baby”, Julie, the ever passionate breastfeeding advocate, enthuses.

“Reesa’s Slide and Ride”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 13, 2014

Ariana Melissa Tempongko Villanueva, or Reesa to her family and close friends, is an avid home baker. Chocolate Chip Cookies, Red Velvet and Carrot Cupcakes are among her scrumptious bestsellers.

Currently a second year college student at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Reesa is taking up BS Community Nutrition.

Recently, Reesa celebrated her 18th birthday, with a unique concoction that warms the heart.

Here is the recipe for Reesa’s satisfying birthday treat!

PRE-HEAT THE OVEN.

Reesa’s decision to forego the traditional cotillion was not made overnight.

As the daughter of Gawad Kalinga (GK) full-time worker Ricky Villanueva, she was a mere 4-year old kid when her father started bringing her to communities to paint houses, till backyard vegetable gardens and play with the children of the GK villages.

Gawad Kalinga, which means to “give care” in Filipino, is recognized globally as a world-class Filipino movement for nation building. It has built close to 2,000 beautiful and thriving communities for the poorest of the poor.

At the age of 18, Reesa was ready to choose a road less-travelled, and to celebrate a milestone in her teenage life.

How else? The GK way! Where else? Her favorite village – GK Pueblo Antonio in Catigan, Toril, Davao City.

SIFT TOGETHER THE DRY INGREDIENTS.

Reesa had to give something concrete, something that the community would benefit from for the long-term.

A stainless work table for the ube processors? Too serious. A fresh coat of paint for the GK houses? Too grown-up.

Even at 18, Reesa was still a child at heart. Bingo! An outdoor playground! The garden fronting the Daycare Center was conveniently vacant – a void that two sets of slides, swings and see-saws would do well to fill.

A GK Playground, this would be Reesa’s long-lasting and tangible legacy to GK Pueblo Antonio!

ADD THE WET INGREDIENTS AND MIX UNTIL WELL-COMBINED.

What is an 18th birthday celebration without a party?

And, so, Reesa planned a typical children’s party – complete with the staple fried chicken and spaghetti (cooked by the Pueblo Antonio Cooperative), chocolate cupcakes (from the ovens of GK Sakadab Village); fun games and prizes; party give-aways; and the party clown who entertained the children for an entire morning.

The highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of the stone marker, Ariana’s Slide and Ride, which formally opened the playground to the children of GK Pueblo Antonio.

COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE FROSTING.

This was to be the icing on Reesa’s proverbial cake: the Daycare children of the village came together and offered her a song, followed by a bouquet of flowers, freshly picked from the homes of the GK residents, and arranged by the mothers of GK Pueblo Antonio.

That exact moment affirmed Reesa’s conviction that a life lived for others is its greatest reward.

NUMBER OF SERVINGS

A whole community of children, and generations of children for years to come!

(The above article was beautifully written by Monique Tempongko-Villanueva, my good friend and the lovely mother of Reesa for Human Nature Davao’s #HeroesRising. Special thanks to Reesa’s elder sister, Kimie Villanueva, for the photos.)

“You the Mom!”
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 27, 2014

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s ‘Super Mom’!

With their almost superhuman qualities, dynamic Mommy Mundo founder Janice Villanueva admires moms for their powers in time management and multitasking alongside their ability to do anything and everything for their loved ones.

“And, they accomplish all of these things wholeheartedly and passionately at that!”, Janice declares.

“Because most moms do their tasks with grace and usually with flair even, we may sometimes forget to show her some appreciation and affirmation. Even moms themselves don’t seem to recognize their own efforts because taking on numerous responsibilities and caring for those we love comes naturally to us. Still, we should take pride in who we are and the important roles we play not only in our own families, but also in our communities and country”, Janice enthuses.

At the recent Expo Mom 2014, Mommy Mundo recognized moms for their many big and small accomplishments through their campaign, “You the Mom!”. The said campaign puts “the spotlight on all the unbelievably good things that moms do by featuring women whose stories represent every mom who has made a difference in her community, her family and her child’s life”.

I was privileged to be one of the inspiring Davao moms of the “You the Mom!” campaign together with Marga Montemayor-Nograles, Lyn Buyco-Tan, Mimi Vergara-Tupas, Olive Puentespina, and Gel Ferrer. We may be involved in different fields and advocacies but all of us share one common thing – motherhood is by far the most challenging and fulfilling role we’ve ever had!

Now on its seventh year, “Expo Mom is the biggest of its kind, gathering progressive, active moms in an environment that’s both recreational and educational. It has become a venue for like-minded moms to establish lasting connections and has also become the catalyst for the mompreneur movement in Manila”, Janice shares.

In Davao, Expo Mom has been organized here only for the second time. Showcasing over 20 booths at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center, the event highlighted exciting all-day talks, demos and raffle draws.

The enlightening talks and activities included “Joomajam” by Vin Dancel of Ritmo; “Your Baby’s Cordblood-Why Bank it?” by Cord Life; “Delightful Electrolux-Price is Right?”; “Best Beginnings” by LATCH Davao; “Building Character in our Children in their Tender Years” by Boyet and Elaine Quinto of EDUCHILD; “Let’s Talk About Fashion” by Erika Soriano-Mata; “Mom and Me Fashion Show” by Stockbridge International School and Soul Lifestyle; “5-Minute Makeup for the Busy Mom” by Carine Bacani; “The Seed Sower” by Lyn Tan; and “Mimathology: Premier Child Photography” by Mima Tan.

Aside from Manila and Davao, Expo Mom has also expanded its campaign to Cebu and Bacolod.
